Sunday afternoon, I was out to look for a place to have my late lunch. Upon checking the other block of this compound, I found out that there were more restaurants lined up that I haven't visited yet. There were a few in my choices: a Japanese sushi restaurant; Hong Kong Day Cafe; or a Taiwanese restaurant. Pizza Hut was even in line. But among all restaurants, I opted to enter a Hong Kong restaurant upon seeing the food menu.
I was looking for the rice set menu, and I found it in Daniel's restaurant. A Filipino tummy can't stand a day without eating rice. If you ask me what to choose, delicious meat or rice alone — I will always choose the latter. The restaurant has a lot of choices for Hong Kong's local cuisine, tea snacks, and desserts. But I was hooked by the rice set with salad, and a free soup that looked enticing and was originally made by the restaurant.
My order consists of rice, pork chops, and salad. It was my first time tasting this kind of Hong Kong salad, which is typically served during tea time. The salad consists of chunks of potatoes, cucumbers, and carrots, with mayonnaise and cream for the sauce. I liked the free soup; it was kind of sweet and smooth. The ingredients include ripe papayas, almond nuts, and white fungus.
In many Hong Kong restaurants, it is typical to see salad sets, which are usually served with fries and fried chicken legs along with tea or coffee of your choice.
And just this morning, I suddenly yearned to make a Hong Kong-style snack set with macaroni salad for the afternoon after seeing the packages of Knorr macaroni soup. I cooked the macaroni, but instead of making a soup, I drained the water and gathered some fruits for additional ingredients. I had some apples in the fridge, a can of pineapple slices in the pantry, and a bottle of mayonnaise. Those ingredients on hand were enough to make a simple salad.
I cut the apples and pineapples into chunks, mixed them with the macaroni, and then added some mayonnaise until well coated. Lastly, I put the macaroni in the fridge and chilled it while preparing other foods that would be included in my snack set.
We still have some potatoes and chicken wings, and I opted to cook them for this so-called HK-style snack set made at home inspired by Daniel's restaurant, lol. The potatoes were baked, while the chicken wings were fried.
Last was the plating, and of course, I just put them all on a plate, just like those in HK snack restaurants. And because of Daniel's restaurant, I was inspired to make my own HK-style snack set at home.
Have you ever tried eating this kind of snacks?
