Top of the morning to you! Hope everyone is having a decent day, weather is cracking here in Japan!
Today’s photos are of two of my favorite seafoods here in the land of the rising sun. All the way from Hokkaido(northern island of Japan), which in my humble opinion produces some of the best seafood on the planet. I would recommend almost any seafood from up there, especially in winter, when everything is fat and at its most juicy!
First is Kegani or hairy crab. It has a soft shell, and is extremely deceiving regarding the meat inside as it looks like it doesn’t carry much weight, especially when they curl up in a ball, they don’t look very big at all. I can’t get enough of crab, so I stupidly thought I could eat one by myself no problems.........the meat is rich, far more flavor than any crab or lobster I’ve eaten, and I couldn’t eat a whole one. Ramen aside, this is my number 1 favorite food. A kegani costs between ¥4000~¥10,000, depending on size and where it is from. If you love crustaceans, this HAS TO be on your bucket list.
To the side is Ikura or salmon eggs. Hokkaido is famous for salmon, and these little balls of goodness live up to the hype! Prices range from ¥5000~¥15000 per kilo. Be careful though, there are a lot of fakes out there.
