I am a province-born child. Being in the province brings us closer to nature, such as the ocean and mountains. Aside from having access to fresh air, salty water, and mountains, one thing I've learnt living in the province is that we have access to free food from nature. You won't have to worry about your next meal in the province because you can collect food from the seas and mountains if you have the abilities.
I've eaten a lot of fresh food from the ocean and mountains, but there's one in particular that has left an indelible impact on my heart. I won't grow bored of eating this sea food no matter how many times I eat it.
This seafood is the sea urchin. I find that sea urchin is the most delicious type of seafood there is. Sea urchin is known as tuyom or salawaki in Cebuano. When I was younger, I didn't have any interest in eating things like that. It wasn't until I met some new folks that I learned how much they enjoy sea urchin. Therefore, I gave it another go and found that, to my delight, I actually enjoyed it.
As a child, I lacked the knowledge required to find sea urchins in the sea. I am grateful to God that I have wise friends. They showed me where to look and how to get one. That day, I learned a skill that I know I can apply in my life, and for that, I was incredibly grateful.
I also discovered that the greatest way to eat sea urchin is with very spicy vinegar and a one-day old rice or what we call "bahaw" in Cebuano. It would be a lot better if you eat it just beside the ocean.
Sea urchin is a delicacy that you are missing out on if you have never tried it. The time to try it out is now.
