Also known as Custard Apple or Sharifa this fruit originates from South America and nowadays can be found in all tropical climate countries.
Here in Mauritius, I am quite lucky to have couple of Cherimoya trees just behind my restaurant in my brother in law's garden...
So basically...i never buy cherimoya, during its season I get a lot for free to enjoy!
Taste and texture
Among all fruits I've tasted in my life...cherimoya tops the list on the sweetness level!
It has a unique blend of flavors that can be compared to bananas, mangoes, and pineapples!
The flesh is white, smooth, and creamy, with some large black seeds that are easy to remove.
That creamy texture makes you think of a custard! 😉😉😉
Normally when we harvest them from the trees, they are not ready for eating and need to put to ripe same like avocados.
Health Benefits
They are super loaded with beneficial nutrients that may boost your mood, immunity, and digestion.
Having a high level of vitamin C, Cherimoya is ideal to help the body produce more vitamin C, which is a critical element in the production of collagen and hence improves the condition of the skin and its protection.
With its high level of potassium this fruit can help lower your blood pressure naturally.
Possessing a wide range of minerals, custard apple has been linked to improving bone health and its density, especially with its high level of copper, manganese, magnesium, and phosphorus.
You can read more on the health benefits here!
However...
Cherimoya contains small amounts of toxic compounds — especially in the skin and seeds.
VERY IMPORTANT
You need to separate the skin and seeds from the flesh before consuming!
Let me show you how I prepare my cherimoya at home!
Once ripe, the fruit will have the same texture as an avocado...and the skin will start separating just with a finger touch!
Break it in half...no need of knife here, go with your hands itself.
And scoop out the flesh with a spoon.
Put in a bowl and let chill before eating!
The seeds are quite easy to take out while eating...not a big deal getting rid of them...
