Hey friends, hope you are all fine. So, how about something delicious breakfast to start your day. I'm gonna tell you about the South-Indian famous breakfast Masala Dosa. I know you all will be eager to know what is it and how to make it easier.
Masala Dosa is one of the popular dishes served in South-Indian restaurants and canteens. And even we can try it on our home as is a simple recipe and all the ingredients are easily available in south India. Dosa is a crepe made from fermented rice and lentil batter. It is crisp, aromatic, and flavourful and has potato masala inside it. They are usually served with coconut chutney and sambar.
Let discuss the recipe and how to make delicious Masala Dosa.
HOW TO MAKE BATTER
Add half a cup of urad dal,3 tablespoon chana dal into a bowl. Wash and soak it for at least 30 minutes for blending.
Take one and a half cups of raw rice and soak them separately for 4 to 5 hours for smooth blending.
- Drain water from dal and blend it using a blender jar by adding water and salt to it as needed. Salt is added to ferment the batter. Blend them until they become frothy and bubbly.
4.Blend rice with enough water to a slightly coarse or smooth batter as you like. Add water to maintain the consistency of the batter to be smooth. Mix both the blended batter.
Our batter is now well mixed, but before preparation, it must ferment.
HOW TO FERMENT BATTER
Cover the batter and keep it in a warm place for ferment, until the batter rises and turns bubbly. It may take 5 to 16 hours depending on the temperature.
MAKING POTATO MASALA
INGREDIENTS
1.Potato (3 medium sizes cuts into medium cube pieces)
2.Carrot (2 medium sizes cuts into medium cube pieces)
3.Onion (1 big size finely chopped )
4.Green chilly (2-3 finely chopped)
5.Ginger ( 1 small piece nicely chopped)
6.Cumins (half teaspoon)
7.Curry leaves (preferred)
8.Mustard (half teaspoon)
9.Coconut oil ( 1 teaspoon)
10.Turmeric powder ( half teaspoon)
11.Salt (preferred for taste)
PREPARATION
- Boil potato and carrot.
- Heat a pan, add oil, cumin, and mustard to it.
- add finely chopped ginger and saute it until the aroma comes out.
- Add chopped onion, green chilly, and curry leaves and saute it until it turns lightly golden.
- Crumple the potato and carrot
- Add them along with turmeric and salt.
The masala is also ready. Now let's make our crispy mala dosa.
MASALA DOSA
- Heat a flat pan on medium heat. Drizzle few drops of oil and rub it over the pan.
- When a pan is hot enough pour the batter into the centre of the pan,
- Immediately spread the batter from the center moving in a clockwise direction, making circles until it reaches the edge of a pan.
- Add half a teaspoon butter or ghee above them.
- When it turns light brown add the masala on one side of the circle.
Now, your masala dosa is ready!.
You can serve the crispy and tasty masala dosa with coconut chutney and sambar.
HOW TO MAKE COCONUT CHUTNEY
Ingredients
- Coconut (1 cup grated)
- Small Onion (2-3 pieces)
- Green Chilly (2 pieces)
- Water (half cup)
- Salt (to taste)
- Mustard seed (half teaspoon)
- Dried red chilly( 2 pieces)
- Curry leaves (2 spring)
Preparation
- Take grated coconut, small onion, green chilly and salt.
- Add water and grind it for 2 minutes until it becomes a paste.
- Heat a pan, add oil, mustard seeds and wait until it pops.
- Add red chilies and curry leaves.
- Pour the coconut paste and switch off the flame.
Your chutney is ready!
HOW TO MAKE SAMBAR
Ingredients
- Toor Dal (1 cup)
- Water (3cup)
- Carrot (1 big cut into cubes)
- Potato (1 medium-sized cuts into a cube)
- 2 Drumstick
- 2 medium Tomato
- 3-4 Okra
- 2 tbsp sambar powder
- half tsp Asafoetida
- 5 small onion
- 2 Red Chilly
- Curry leaves
- Oil
- Mustard
- Turmeric
Preparation
- Pressure cook the dal with water and turmeric powder for 3-5 whistles.
- Mash the cooked dal well.
- Add water to the mashed dal and blend it well.
- Add the veggies to it except okra and tomato.
- Meanwhile take a pan and just fry the tomato and okra for 2 minutes on low flame.
- When the veggies are half boiled add the okra and tomato along with wit tamarind pulp and cook again, add salt for taste.
- heat oil in another pan add sambar powder and Asafoetida. Fry it for a minute and make sure it doesn't burn.
- Add this to the veggies and let it boil.
- Heat some oil and crackle the mustard seeds. Add sliced onion, red chilly and curry leaves.
- Fry it until it becomes golden brown and add it to the mixture.
Now our sambar ready!

Dosa is a healthy and tasty breakfast option for people who need a keep a check on their fat intake. The risk of heart diseases is occurred due to a high amount of saturated fat increase. Dosas are low on saturated fat, which makes them a healthy and safe breakfast option.
