We're still on the first day of Osaka, Japan! The food there is absolutely amazing. One of my favorite snacks that I got to try were okonomiyaki and takoyaki. Kev loves it a lot so we ate that almost half of the time we're there O.o If you're not familiar with these treats.
Takoyaki 🐙 is like a cute little ball of happiness! It's a popular snack in Japan made of wheat flour batter and filled with diced octopus, tempura bits, and green onion. Then it's cooked in a special takoyaki round pan (to make the snack a ball shape), and topped with a yummy sauce, mayo, dry squid shakes, and green onion.
It's a super duper popular street food originated in Osaka and that's why they pushing or loving it so much that you can find it in many forms such as plushies, socks, souvenirs, and more. It's a great way to take a piece of Osaka back home with you. I got a pair of socks!! (Last image! #lol)
Okonomiyaki 🍕 , on the other hand, is like a cute little pancake (some people call it Japanese Pizza! I do!) It's a popular dish in Japan that's made by mixing together ingredients like wheat flour, eggs, and cabbage, and then grilling it on a hot plate. You can add all sorts of yummy things to it, like bacon, shrimp, or cheese. Some places let us add our favorite toppings on it, like green onion, fish flakes, mayo and special Okonomiyaki sauce. It's a real treat for your taste buds!
These two are absolutely delicious and also a must-try if you're ever in Osaka.
We stumbled upon a chain store in Osaka that served both okonomiyaki and takoyaki. I actually am not a big fan of chain store but trust me, in Japan, whatever food it is, chain or not, it's so damn good so we went for it! The okonomiyaki was perfectly cooked and the filling was so flavorful. The takoyaki was also delicious.. A little crispy from the outside and a little gluey/liquidy (imagine lava but white!). The octopus was so tender and the sauce was the perfect balance of sweet and savory.
I tried picking 'Salt' flavor once and that's also the whole different story. Not saucy so it's easier to eat.
If you're ever in Osaka, I highly recommend you give these delicious snacks a try. Doesn't have to be the one I shared as this one was not even the best we had but it's already so dang good!
Osaka is aweeeesome... Not only you can enjoy the real takoyaki but you can also bring a piece of Osaka's culture back home with you (Get the toe socks!! jaja!!!)
