Have you ever heard of Shimonoseki, Japan? As mentioned/promised in my previous post, this post, we will talk all about that! Shimonoseki is a seafood capital surrounded by the sea on two sides, and it's known for its seafood, especially fugu or puffer fish.. dangerously delicious!
My friends and I decided to visit this fugu restaurant, Yabure Kabure, just 10 mins walk from the main station and you guessed it, they serve all dishes with only puffer fish.
From puffer fish skin salad to deep-fried small puffer fish, puffer fish sashimi, grilled puffer fish (which we got to grill ourselves - so fun!), puffer fish soup, and even puffer fish rice soup. It was my first time visiting this kind of restaurant, so I was pretty excited. And let me tell you, the texture of the puffer fish was amazing. It's more firm and chewy than other kinds of fish, but the taste, I didn't see much difference.
But that's not all! The restaurant was decked out in all things puffer fish - from the puffer fish curtains to the puffer fish sewer covers and puffer fish images and statues. It was crazy cool!
I can honestly say that visiting Shimonoseki and see all things puffer fish was a unique experience. I highly recommend checking it out. I barely see any foreigners there so I think we found a great city to be in! Of course, try the puffer fish at least once! Just be careful and make sure you're eating it from a reputable source, because fugu can be poisonous if not prepared correctly.
All in all, it was a fun and delicious adventure that I'm so glad I got to experience a Fugu restaurant in Japan. I really love the fact that they don't serve other things than puffer fish! #lol If you're ever in the mood for something different, give fugu a try. You might just be surprised by how much you like it because I sure do!
