It was later than normal that I got out of the house yesterday but it was for a good reason. My first produce sale of the season needed to be delivered to the co-op which doesn't start intake until 8:00am. Normally I am home by that time if I go to get grain but I had to make the full circuit and luckily the traffic wasn't too bad since morning commuters drive right. Since I was going to town I took the empty barrels to one brewery then went and picked up 2 barrels of grain at the other brewery, then I drove to the other end of the city to drop off the co-op orders.
I like to be at the co-op right at 8:00 am so I can be home by 8:30. I am always the first one to drop off and most times they haven't even printed their lists yet to check my stuff against but my orders are always easy so it's never really a problem.
It was only 2 barrels which I dumped out for the animals after unhooking the trailer. The sheep didn't dive into the grain, it was the chickens that spent a large part of the morning scratching through it. They do a better job of spreading the grain around than the sheep who just tromp through and over it.
30 pounds of squash for the day. The variety I have going now is quite awesome and I like the look of them all mixed together. 11 different squash with about half being yellow and half being green.
At noon I headed north to the feed store to pickup chicken feed. I got 500 pounds of their free range layer feed which I put 4 bags into the feeder in the coop and the other 6 bags in the drum. The last 10 bags lasted me about 3 months but that was also through spring when the farm was exploding in growth. With the dry conditions I expect they will go through it a bit faster now.
At 5:00 pm I drove a couple miles south to meet the Azure co-op delivery driver to pick up our order. I now have my new tubs for picking squash. The other ones I have been using don't hold as much as these. The smaller ones could only hold 15 pounds where these will hold 20 pounds per. I also love that they are in my color.
Also in the co-op order was my starter scoby for kombucha and my water kefir grains. I have made water kefir before but let it die and I want to get another batch going. The kombucha will take a long time but the kefir is ready a lot faster.
After got home from town we took our beers and ourselves and went down to the creek. It really is crazy how low the water is already with the lack of rains and the dry winter. Last year the creek was flowing such that it covered the tunnel floor and had the pool filled. This is going to be a really dry summer it seems and hopefully the spring keeps the creek going.
Jax was getting sleepy and I tried to get a shot of him zoned out but he turned right as I took the shot. He had a dopey look on his face and his ears were cocked all goofy, and then he turned.
Today we have people coming to pickup their co-op order in the morning, I have to go up to the squash garden to fix a leak in the irrigation, I have laundry to do, and we HAVE to get this house cleaned.
