Some of the things that have got us thinking the world is overpopulated are when we see a pile of rubbish, oozing with germs and disease, a set of children living in abject poverty with no hope of education, seeing the number of death during the full outrage of COVID, How the attempts were made to cut down the numbers but people still died in their millions.
A pandemic, for example, shows how overpopulation people are, this is to say that normally the idea that the world is overpopulated is derived from a situation that should be an anomaly rather than a usual occurrence. Human actions for example also prove the idea that the world is indeed overpopulated.
Bush burning, the killing of extinct animals for food, bad practices like filling the air with toxic waste by big industries. Now, these industries polluting the climatic condition are serving some particular set of people with the product their making, and sometimes they the extra mile to cover the extra number of people who are interested in their product.
However, let's look at it from this angle.
.......The total surface of the earth is 197 million square miles, with 71% covered by water and 29% by land. Normally, people don't live on water, on the surface, if we look at almost 8 billion people living on earth, it feels like 29% of the land surface will generally not be enough. This is another aspect to consider when talking about sparsely or densely populated.
On paper it feels like this 29% of this surface area isn't enough for like 8 billion people, but how much is this surface area and if the landed areas are being shared equally, shouldn't people live comfortably irrespective of their geographical limitations.
China takes like 2 billion of this population already, so how much surface and water area is China already occupying? Plus what's the ratio of land shared between rich people and people who are not? The reason for this is because we have to truly check if the world's truly overpopulated or it's just human actions and mismanagement that make it seem so.
So, Is The World Overpopulated?
No, I don't think the world is overpopulated, things like scarcity, lack of resources, lack of planning, unfair geographical distribution, and bad leadership are why the world seems overpopulated. Let's take a look. Wealthy people occupy an enormous amount of space.
When you look at the landed areas used to construct mansions all over the world, you'll understand that people who already have money, buy up comfortable spaces, leaving people who do not have the means to occupy spaces that are too small for the numbers.
This is to say that people who don't have enough money are attracted to cheap areas, so when a lot of people without enough resources begin to live in a cheap place, the amount of congestion and the likelihood of disease will increase. So logically, one of the main causes of the population in places like Africa is the affordability of places where people can choose to live.
Here's An Interesting Angle
Another Reason Why The World seems Overpopulated is because of the Lack Of Consciousness. For example, people increase in numbers without consciously taking responsibility for this increase. In Nigeria for example, we have people who are beggars having close to 7 to 8 children, for just a parent. Now they're already begging in the streets, sleeping in the dumps, defecating on the major roads and all.
Now imagine having children and adding them up to the begging ventures while increasing their numbers without enough resources. Now it isn't everyone who should cut down their numbers. People who have enough resources and enough space can afford to have as many children as they want, but people who don't should limit the numbers in order not to crowd their space.
I've made mentioned the fact that wealthy people occupy a lot of space, they buy up comfortable places driving prices up, and making landed areas unaffordable, this is why resources and meaning are the biggest reasons for the illusion of overpopulation. I call it an illusion because the world is overpopulated by choice and action and not because it's naturally so.
In Conclusion
I think more people should be conscious. The universe is big enough, but some of our actions are what foster overpopulation. In reality, we must pay cognizance of this. Not a lot of people are educated about the effect of their actions. I think different countries should educate their citizens about the impact of overpopulation and how to cultivate the right set of practices to decrease the negative effect on the climatic and atmospheric conditions.
Another thing is some strict laws of migration make the world population per geographical distribution unfair. When people are spread out, the issue of overpopulation shouldn't be there in the first place. However, depopulating the world will also be an individual decision.
Irrespective of the government's decision or the role of technology. Investing money into creating global awareness of the negative impact of overpopulation will create conscious-minded people all over the world. The world will continue to remain unfair when it comes to distribution and resources, however creating awareness is the place to begin.
