The forecast is only rain for the foreseeable future. I have today and tomorrow morning to get as much done around the farm as I can. There is a number of things that need to be taken care of or at least covered today.
After getting the boys to school and once it warmed up a bit I was out in the garden. First thing was to take down the fence for the gherkins and squash. I rolled it up, tossed the squash plants to the birds, then dug up the gherkin tubers. They have a thick base root with lots of fat thick roots running out from it. I had to hack them off and was able to get them into pots for the winter. I found a third one that looked like it might do better than the larger ones since I didn't screw its roots up that bad. I'm hoping to keep them alive through winter so next year I can pant them again and have a super good head start on the year.
Irrigation lines got rolled up at the top of the garden in the open rows from the squash and beans that I have pulled up already.
The pole garden needed to be finished up so I rolled the plastic to one side and dumped all the debris into the wheelbarrow. The plastic got folded and all the debris tossed on the mulch pile.
All the irrigation lines got rolled up at the base of the poles for winter and I have room now for the load of grain that I got this morning.
My mom was digging her row of potatoes and I went and gave her a hand. I used the pitch fork to go behind her and double check the row.
Ended up with a 100 pounds of potatoes and a little bit of small sweet potatoes.
I rinsed them all off and then they got sorted out on the deck. They will be going to the basement for the winter after they dry off today.
I had to get beans worked on as I had 6 rows still to get through. Instead of gathering the plants I just piled them then tossed them over the fence to the birds.
I worked my way up the two rows filling the tubs as I went.
I got half way but the Romano beans have a lot more to pick per plant so I just finished off the one row.
38 pounds between the tubs.
I got dinner made and right before we had to leave for Scouts I got the garden covered again for hopefully the last time this year.
Scouts was pumpkin painting night. It was FAR easier to cleanup than carving and they all had a blast. Well fueled by sugar they ran their fool heads off once they were done painting.
While we were at Scouts was cutting up cucumbers to go in the freeze dryer. All 5 trays are filled with spears and some rounds and all plain. This is going to give us int he range of 100 cucumbers freeze dried this year.
I remembered after showering that I needed to get grain this morning so I went out and hooked up the trailer which I thankfully did not have empties to worry about.
Soaking was nice but my back is just torched. I am sleeping for such garbage each night and wake up so many times it is really frustrating.
I have been to town this morning and gotten grain already. In a while I will empty the barrels out into the pole garden and maybe the sheep pen. Then today I have to get the farm ready for the coming rains and winter. So much to do and not much time to do it. I need three of me sometimes.
