Amigurumi #200: Unos seres llamados Gentiles || A group of creatures named Gentiles

Estoy feliz de terminar de diseñar a Los Gentiles. Desde que los dibujé, tenía pendiente hacerles su muñeco, para que más personas sepan de su existencia en la Tierra, de este grupo de seres vivos.

I'm excited to finish designing Los Gentiles. Ever since I drew them, I’ve been meaning to make them their own crocheted toy, so that more people will know they exist on Earth—this group of living beings.

Tradición oral || Oral tradition

Cuando pregunto a los Quechuahablantes sobre los Gentiles, ellos me miran seriamente y comienzan a contarme la historia escuchada por sus abuelos o gente mayor de su pueblo, quienes lo escucharon de sus abuelos... y así sucesivamente. A este tipo de fuente lo llamamos Tradición oral.

Para ellos, los Gentiles es más que un cuento, mito o leyenda. Es como si guardasen un profundo respeto por los seres del pasado. Como si hubiese una convivencia sana entre los seres del pasado y los humanos.

When I ask Quechua speakers about the Gentiles, they look at me seriously and begin to tell me the story they heard from their grandparents or the elders of their community, who heard it from their grandparents... and so on. We refer to this type of source as oral tradition.

For them, the Gentiles is more than just a story, myth, or legend. It’s as if they harbor a deep respect for the creatures of the past . As if there were a harmonious coexistence between creatures of the past and humans.

Del papel al muñeco || From paper to crocheted toy

Este dibujo lo hice hace unos meses para un reto con temática Halloween. Por eso Gentil lleva un cráneo, un fantasmita y una enorme calabaza; estos elementos están algo relacionados a este personaje (menos esa variedad de calabaza).

Cuando le mostré a papá diciéndole que es mi versión de Los Gentiles, le gustó bastante y me dijo: "Así son"... Ahora que lo pienso, papá me habló en tiempo presente. Con esto me refieron a que el Quechua está en el tiempo presente, está vivo. Luego le expliqué el significado de los 2 soles. Papá me escuchó, como si un niño escuchase la historia completa de su cuento favorito, jaja.

I drew this a few months ago for a Halloween themed challenge. That's why Gentil is carrying a skull, a little ghost, and a huge pumpkin; these items are somewhat associated with this character (except for that type of pumpkin).

When I showed it to Dad and told him that this is my version of Los Gentiles, he really liked it and said, That's exactly what they're like. Now that I think about it, Dad spoke to me in the present tense. By this, they mean that Quechua is in the present tense; it is alive. Then I explained the meaning of the two suns to him. Dad listened to me, just like a kid listening to the whole story of his favorite story, jaja.

El saludo peludo || The hairy Greeting

Con este personaje quiero traer a este tiempo a uno de los representantes de Los Gentiles, para que nos cuente cómo era el mundo hace ufff. Me interesa saber sobre la diversidad de flora y fauna, sobre todo su estilo de vida en cuanto a su alimentación.

With this character, I want to bring one of the representatives of the Gentiles into the present day, so he can tell us what the world was like way back when. I'm interested in learning about the diversity of flora and fauna, especially their feeding habits.

Adaptación al tiempo || Adaptation to the environment

Es por eso que esta versión lleva zapatillas urbanas o callejeras. Porque, Gentil se adapta a las épocas y quiere pasar desapercibido, jaja. Hablando de eso, Gentil tiene mucho que ver en esto de la adaptación al tiempo. Según la historia (los relatos), desaparecieron por inadaptados; cosa que yo no lo creo. Quizá acabó con gran parte, pero no con todos.

That's why this version features urban or street sneakers. Because Gentil goes with the flow and wants to blend in, jaja. Speaking of which, Gentil plays a big role in this whole adjusting to the times thing. According to the story (the accounts), they disappeared because they couldn't fit in; which I don't believe. Maybe it wiped out most of them, but not all of them.

A veces pienso, ¿qué sería si llegara a las manos de Gentil este muñeco?. El mundo estaría más loco que yo, jaja... Para mí que Ǵentil se pone a usar ese diseño de zapatillas para identificarse con el muñeco.

Sometimes I wonder, what if this doll ended up in Gentil’s hands? The world would be even crazier than I am, jaja. I think Ǵentil is wearing those sneakers to identify with the crocheted toy.
