Hello to everyone in this community and sewing enthusiasts! A couple of months ago, I had the opportunity to officially relaunch my online shop, Suecitos, not only creating new pieces to offer but also attending some craft fairs. It's been a gradual process, as I hadn't been able to dedicate myself fully to this personal project for quite some time, which has given me the confidence to continue sewing and creating. This is where commissions and sewing orders come in, and where I've regained some of the confidence I had lost. Today, I'll show you how I completed my first handbag commission since relaunching my brand.
The client was amazed by my work, especially a type of fish-shaped shoulder bag I was selling, so she asked if it would be possible for me to make one like that, but in the shape of a car. I found the request very curious and eye-catching, so I accepted mainly because I wanted to challenge myself and see how it would turn out, haha. After searching online, I couldn't find any examples that could serve as a reference, so it was a challenge that, to my surprise, my imagination accepted almost immediately, as ideas for making the bag started flowing right away. So, I first made a sketch of how I could do it, and with a clearer idea, I got to work.

After making the drawing, I cut out the fabric pieces, which were the following: 2 rectangles in gabardine (front and back of the bag), a piece of fabric for the lining, as well as the pieces corresponding to the car's wheels (8 for the wheels and 8 for the rims) and the windows (double pieces).

In addition, I also used cord, bias tape, a piece of foam rubber, as well as some pieces of interfacing and the label that I usually put on the pieces that I make from scratch.
First, I ironed interfacing onto four of the wheel pieces. I did this to give the wheels stiffness, so if you use a thicker material or stuff them, it's not necessary. But since I didn't have either at the time, I decided to use interfacing. When it came time to sew, I started by closing the circles to make the rims. Then, I made an opening on one side so I could turn the pieces right side out.

Next, I ironed the rim pieces and sewed them to the front of the tires using a small zigzag stitch. Once that was done, I attached the back of the tires, ironed them, and turned them right side out, thus obtaining the wheel pieces. As I mentioned, the idea of stuffing them seems great to me, but at least I'm happy that the fabric I used for the tires had a nice texture that I thought was perfect.

Next, I moved on to the windows. It was the same procedure as with the rims: sew the pieces together, make a small opening, turn it right side out, and iron. Once again, I feel that the satin finish of the fabric I used was ideal for giving that window effect.

With those pieces ready (which I consider the most tedious part, haha), I proceeded to hem the top edges of the front and back pieces, wide enough for the drawstring to pass through. I also made a mock-up of the underside of a car, minimizing the details as much as possible, using bias tape and foam.

I then proceeded to sew the windows and my brand label with a small zigzag stitch, as well as attaching the wheels to the sides of the front of the bag. At this point, I was quite pleased with how it was turning out.

To attach the drawstring, I used a safety pin, inserting it into one end of the hem of one of the bag pieces and then passing it through the other piece, as shown in the photo. The length of the drawstring should cover the height of the bag once both strips are connected. This step needs to be done twice (right and left side) so that when pulled, both strips gather the bag.

Once that was done, I proceeded to close the bag, making sure to seal the ends of the drawstrings. For the lining, I closed it at the bottom and sides, leaving it open at the top, as this is where I would attach it to the main piece of the bag, leaving a small opening to turn the bag right side out.

After turning the bag inside out, I closed the opening with a hand stitch, and that's how the bag with such a unique design was finished ✨🚗

I must confess that I loved not only the process but also the result. I didn't think it would turn out so well, and of course, the client was thrilled with how it looked. We even agreed to get in touch for another bag in the future. This project not only helped me overcome my fear of taking on sewing commissions (going so long without commissions made me believe I wasn't capable of doing them now), but it also really boosted my creativity. I also made a little bag like this in the shape of a Christmas tree, so you can see that you can create interesting designs with this simple type of bag. The only thing that changes is your creativity 😉

¡Hola a todos los integrantes de esta comunidad y amantes de la costura! Un par de meses atrás tuve la oportunidad de reactivar oficialmente mi tienda virtual Suecitos, no sólo creando nuevas piezas para ofrecer, sino también asistiendo a algunos bazares. Éste ha sido un camino que he dado paso a paso, ya que tenía bastante tiempo sin poderme dedicar tan a fondo a este proyecto personal, lo cual me ha dado la confianza de seguir cosiendo y creando. En ese ámbito, entran las comisiones o encargos de costura, donde he recuperado parte de la confianza que había perdido. Hoy les mostraré cómo realicé mi primera comisión de bolso, desde la reactivación de mi marca.
La cliente quedó maravillada con mi trabajo, sobre todo de un tipo de bolso con tirantes en forma de pez que estaba vendiendo, así que me preguntó que si sería posible que le realizase uno de ese tipo, pero con forma de automóvil. Me pareció muy curioso y llamativo el encargo, así que acepté más que nada porque quería desafiarme y ver cómo me quedaba jaja porque luego de buscar en línea, no encontré ejemplos que me pudieran servir de referencia, así que se trataría de un reto que, para mi sorpresa, mi imaginación aceptó casi de inmediato, pues las ideas para confeccionar el bolso, comenzaron a llegar de inmediato. De ese modo, primero elaboré un boceto de cómo podría hacerlo y con una idea más clara, me puse manos a la obra.

Tras hacer el dibujo, saqué las piezas en tela, las cuales fueron las siguientes: 2 rectángulos en gabardina (delantero y trasero del bolso), un trozo de tela para hacer el forro, así como las piezas correspondientes a las ruedas del automóvil (8 para las ruedas y 8 para los rines) y las ventanas (piezas dobles).

Adicional a ello, también usé cordón, sesgo, un trozo de goma espuma, así como unos trocitos de entrelea y la etiqueta que suelo colocar en las piezas que elaboro desde cero.
Primero planché la entretela en 4 de las piezas corresponientes a las ruedas. Esto lo hice para darle dureza a las ruedas, así que si se utiliza un material más grueso o se rellena, no es necesario. Pero, como en ese momento no contaba ni con lo uno ni lo otro, pensé en lo de la entretela. A la hora de pasar a la máquina de coser, comencé cerrando los círculos para hacer los rines. Luego, hice una abertura en uno de los lados para poder voltear las piezas.

Seguidamente planché las piezas de los rines y las cosí en las partes delanteras de las llantas utilizando una costura pequeña en zig zag. Una vez hecho esto, le anexé la parte trasera de las llantas, planché y volteé, obteniendo así las piezas de las ruedas. Como mencioné, la idea de rellenarlas me parece genial, pero al menos me conformo con que la tela que utilicé para hacer las llantas, tenía una linda textura que pensé que le iba perfecto.

Luego, pasé a las ventanas. Fue el mismo procedimiento que con los rines: coser las piezas, hacer una pequeña abertura, voltear y planchar. Una vez más, siento que lo satinado de la tela que utilicé, fue ideal para dar ese efecto de que era una ventana.

Teniendo esas piezas listas (que considero, es la parte más tediosa jeje), pasé a hacer un dobladillo en la partes superiores de las piezas delantera y trasera, lo suficientemente ancho como para que pasase el cordón. Así como, realicé una imitación de la parte de abajo de un automóvil reduciendo al máximo los detalles, utilizando el sesgo y la goma espuma.

Procedí entonces a coser las ventanas y la etiqueta de mi marca con una costura pequeña en zig zag, así como pegando las ruedas a los costados de la parte delantera del bolso. A éste punto, estaba bastante satisfecha con cómo estaba quedando.

Para colocar el cordón, utilicé un alfiler o imperdible, metiéndolo en uno de los extremos del dobladillo de una de las piezas del bolso para luego, pasarlo por la otra pieza, como se ve en la fotografía. El largo del cordón debe abarcar el alto del bolso una vez que ambas tiras se conecten. Este paso hay que hacerlo dos veces (lado derecho e izquierdo), para que al jalar, ambas tiras frunzan el bolso.

Una vez hecho esto, pasé a cerrar el bolso, procurando sellar los extretremos de los cordones. En el caso del forro, lo cerré en la parte inferior y los laterales, dejándolo abierto en la parte superior, pues en esta parte lo uniría con la pieza principal del bolso, dejando una pequeña abertura para voltear el bolso.

Tras voltear el bolso, cerré la abertura por donde lo hice con una costura a mano y de esa forma, estuvo terminado el bolso con diseño tan particular ✨🚗

Debo confesar que amé no sólo el proceso, sino también el resultado. No pensé que quedaría tan bien y por supuesto, la cliente estuvo encantada con cómo quedo y hasta quedamos en ponernos en contacto para otro bolso más adelante. Hacer este proyecto no sólo me ayudó a perder el miedo a abrir comisiones de costura (pasar tanto tiempo sin hacer comisiones, me hizo creer que no era capaz de hacerlas en el presente), así como "activar" mucho más mi creatividad. También hice un bolso de este tipo con forma de árbol de navidad, para que observen que pueden lograrse diseños interesantes con éste tipo de bolso tan sencillos, lo único que cambia es nuestra creatividad 😉
