Mike Munchak is another franchise legend, and NFL legend! He was with the Oilers/Titans as a player and then a coach for 31 years combined. He was the number eight overall pick for the Oilers in 1982. He then would go on to have a Hall of Fame career as a left guard for eleven seasons, all with the Oilers, before retiring as a player after the 1993/94 season.
As a player Munchak was a beast. Here is a list of his accomplishments as a player:
- NFL Hall of Famer
- 2x First-Team All-Pro
- 6x Second-Team All-Pro
- 9x Pro Bowls
- NFL 1980's All-Decade Team
- Titans/Oilers Ring Of Honor
- His number 63 is retired for the franchise
Munchak played in 159 games for the franchise, starting 156. He started all sixteen games in six seasons. He also played in ten playoff games for the Oilers, starting all of those.
Literally the following season, Munchak was hired by the Oilers to be an assistant coach. From 1997-2010 Munchak was the team's o-line coach. In 2011 he was hired as the team's head coach where he did a pretty average job before being let go in after the 2013/14 season.
It's been a wild ride for the Titans at head coach. Can't believe Munchak was let go nearly a decade ago already. I almost forget he was a head coach at times. Time flies!
Munchak did have a winning season in 2011 with well known veteran Matt Hasselbeck at QB. They narrowly missed the playoffs that year.
Since departing with the Titans, Munchak was the o-line coach with the Steelers and Broncos. He last coached in 2021.
What a legend. Maybe the Titans' 2023 first round pick Peter Skoronski can be the next Titans o-line Hall of Famer!
