Today, I present a rare collectible round!
In 1941, during World War II, the ship SS Gairsoppa was sunk. The 412-foot steel-hulled cargo steamer, S.S. Gairsoppa, was a British merchant freighter that was carrying up to 7 million ounces of silver bullion along with tea, pig iron, and other goods on her way from Bombay to Britain via western Africa.
Silver retrieved from the shipwreck SS Gairsoppa was used to manufacture these rounds. This is an uncommon silver round.
Vintage Sunshine Mint SS Gairsoppa Silver Round
Obverse: The obverse features an image of the ship steaming through the ocean. Text beneath the image reads "SS GAIRSOPPA / SUNK FEBRUARY 17, 1941".
Reverse: The central feature on the reverse is a circle containing the text "CERTIFIED GAIRSOPPA SHIPWRECK SILVER". The composition of ".999 FINE SILVER" is located above the central text while the weight of "ONE TROY OUNCE" can be found below it.

Even though Sunshine Mint is renowned for maintaining consistency in its product line, it occasionally offers new designs, such as the SS Gairsoppa Shipwreck Sunshine Silver Bar. Sunshine Mint utilized a portion of the silver that was found aboard the British transport ship in 2010 to create this commemorative round. Germans sank the SS Gairsoppa during the First World War when it was transporting silver from India to London.
