When it comes to propagation of fruit trees there is one important benefit of using cuttings and not growing from seed.
when using cuttings, we are creating an identical clone of the mother plant. while not being a big fan of such clones due to the risk of diseases (when all clones can be affected), there is one benefit which is very positive.
a tree grown from seed need to get to its sexual maturity before starting to bear fruit, while a clone in some cases, like the fig tree pictured above, is already sexually matured, even though being physically small.
this practice can save years of waiting for the tree to mature.
we do have to bear in mind, that due to the small size, such a tree will have limited fruit in amount and likely in size in the first years.
another important benefit is that while making a clone, we know exactly what the end result would be. hence for making of our cuttings we will choose a mother tree for the properties we seek to see in the future tree, be it for bountiful yield, overall good genetics etc.
