On Wednesday I was up late at 6:15AM and got the cat fed before he died. I woke to rain and it rained off and on all day. I got my post up and then spent the morning working on bills/budget. I didn’t finish. I had PT in the afternoon, and they really worked me. In bed early at 7PM after watching videos in afternoon as I was so tired. We got 2¼” of rain.
I have been seeing a lot of small toads for the last couple weeks. This one was in the West of Steps garden when I was checking the rain gauge.
On Thursday I was up at 6AM and my back, etc was sore from PT so I wasn’t moving too fast. I had to get a load in the dishwasher before I went out to the gardens. I finally made it outside at 7:45AM.
I picked up where I had left off on Tuesday and started cleaning out the rest of Row 3, the 3rd walkway, and half of Row 4. I had the Echinacea paradoxa to deadhead and that took quite a while. Then there was pulling the peppermint out of everywhere. It took 2 hours to get this part done.
I could finally start planting in Row 2. I had to prep the beds first. When I went to get plants, I was surprised that everything I needed to plant was still alive in the cold frame, even if they didn’t look so good. They would hopefully have 2 more months for growing. I got them all planted but was too tired to mulch them. I hope to get that done on Friday or Saturday.
In going back and forth to the cold frame, I was surprised to see the delphinium had flowered again in the New East garden. The zinnias have done well this year, where I got them planted.
I got my photos, made my notes, and got cleaned up by noon. I was very tired and my foot hurt a lot. My helper friend had arrived and I had to get a shower and rest before I could get started again.
I set him to cleaning up the kitchen and bagging up the garlic to store. It came to 19 lbs. He took it down to hang in the old root cellar.
He then began grating 6 cups of zucchini while I rested. Then we got the first batch of bread into the oven. I got distracted at the end of the baking, so it got a little darker than it should have. At least I know it’s cooked through!
While it baked, he grated up the other huge zucchini and we put it in freezer bags in 1½ cup size for future use. We got 6 bags.
We got the last batches in the oven and were trying to figure out what to do with the 7 smaller zucchinis we had left. I had gotten 3 more off the plant as they were getting big.
He mentioned giving them to food pantries and we had one in a nearby town. I called and they were just closing but would wait for him to bring them down. So while the last 2 batches baked, he ran them into town. So for the moment, I don’t have zucchini on the counter.
When he got back, we put up the new outside thermometer. But we forgot to adjust it before we did it. So we will have to take it down to do that, maybe on Friday. I was so tired by the time he left. I just sat and rested until bedtime. I got 3 of the 4 loaves into the freezer. Part of one was supper.
On Friday he will be back at 8AM as will my general helper. I have to go out as soon as it is light and harvest the storage onions. He and I will get them cleaned up and in the woodshed’s alcove, now the garlic is out. Once that is done, we will take the netting off the clothesline and put it away. It got washed well on Wednesday.
He leaves at 11:30AM and hopefully my general helper and I can get the netting off the trees and put away. Most of the fruit is either harvested or eaten by critters. While my helper friend and I are doing onions, my general helper will be pulling the big stuff out of the rest of the New Herb garden.
So another very busy day…
