Hello, friends at Hive and Hive Garden. I hope you’re all well. As for me, I’m all set to enjoy a few days off over the Easter holidays – since I work at a school, I get the week off – and I wanted to make the most of it to tell you that, as well as the tomato and pepper seedlings, a while back I also planted a few cassava cuttings and some watermelon and pumpkin seeds.
I was reluctant to plant again because the soil conditions are poor and there are a lot of water problems where I live, but my mum gave me some cassava cuttings and I decided to prepare the ground where I was going to plant them. I put in 12 cassava cuttings, which have now been growing for about two months, and so far they seem to be doing well, but we’ll see the results when it’s time to harvest them.
Before planting the cassava cuttings, I dug the holes and filled them all with fertilised soil. Then I placed the cuttings in, filled the holes and left them slightly sunken so that when I water them, the water doesn’t run off to the sides, because the soil here seems to repel water as it’s always so dry.
Once the cassava plants had grown plenty of foliage, I took advantage of the shade they provided to plant some watermelon and pumpkin seeds near the base, hoping they’d withstand the intense sun we’ve been having lately. I’ve had this happen before: I planted some seeds and they sprouted quickly, but the sun scorched them and they didn’t thrive, even though I watered them.
This time, thanks to the shade from the yucca plants, at least the squash ones are growing very well, but the watermelon ones haven’t made any progress, even though they looked lovely and I’ve been watering them and they aren’t getting too much sun. But I might just plant some more; we’ll see.
Apart from that, there are other plants I’ve planted in the courtyard, but they’re slow-growing varieties like soursop, pomalaca, achiote and jobo, and they’re just sitting there enduring this blazing sun. But as we’ve got a good-sized water tank in the courtyard, I water them every day, and I hope they’ll all thrive and bear fruit because I’m putting a lot of time into them.

Hola amigos de Hive y de Hive Garden, espero que todos estén bien. Por mi parte ya listo para disfrutar de unos días libres por la Semana Santa porque ya que trabajo en una escuela me toca la semana libre y quise aprovechar y contarles que aparte del semillero de tomate y pimentón también hace un tiempo aproveché de sembrar unos palos de yuca y también unas semillas de patilla y auyama (calabaza).
Yo estaba reacio a sembrar otra vez porque las condiciones del suelo son malas y aquí en donde vivo hay muchos problemas con el agua, pero mi mamá me regaló unos palos de yuca y decidí preparar la tierra donde iba a sembrar y metí 12 palos de yuca que ya tienen unos dos meses creciendo y por ahora se ve que van bien, pero los resultados los veremos cuando sea el tiempo de sacarlos.
Antes de sembrar los palos de yuca abrí los huecos y eché tierra abonada en todos y después metí los palos y llené los huecos y dejé un poco hundido para que cuando las regara el agua no se fuese para los lados porque aquí la tierra parece que repele el agua de lo seca que está siempre.
Cuando ya los palos de yuca tenían bastante follaje aproveché la sombra que dan para meter cerca del pie unas semillas de patilla y auyama buscando que aguanten el sol tan fuerte que está haciendo en estos días porque ya me pasó que sembré unas y salieron rápido pero el sol las quemó y ni porque las regara prosperaron.
Esta vez gracias a la sombra de las matas de yuca por lo menos las de auyama están creciendo muy bien pero las de patilla no avanzaron y eso que estaban bien bonitas y las riego y no les pega tanto sol, pero de repente vuelvo a sembrar otra vez, vamos a ver.
Aparte hay otras matas que sembré en el patio pero esas son de crecimiento lento como guanábana, pomalaca, achiote y jobo y ahí están soportando este solazo pero como tenemos un buen tanque en el patio las riego todos los días, y espero que todas puedan salir adelante y dar fruto porque les estoy dedicando bastante tiempo.
