Updates from my balcony gardening project and my participation in the #HWC2024
Good news, I have a bunch of healthy pumpkin plants and I only kept those that looked the strongest and potted them into slightly larger pots. I also harvested my first small potato today and it made it on the dinner table. It was delicious.
I will be away on a movie set for the next 5 days and I have already instructed my wife how to deal with the pumpkin plants.
I left 4 plants in the original growing pot and replanted 4 into 3 larger pots.
I want to select the 3 strongest plants to be planted in the big planting pot I have bought for the purpose.
I got rid of a bunch of salad plants, unfortunately the weather was too hot and the salad really suffered from it. There are still a few plants left that now get more nutrients from the soil and a bigger portion of the water too.
I removed the dry leaves and discarded them after taking this photo.
It was such a warm and windy day and I had no hopes for some rain coming to cool us off. So I watered the plants myself again. The rain has been avoiding Balconia lately and it was hard to keep the garden in a good shape. Especially with both of us working and hardly being at home.
We now have fewer tomatoes, I had to get rid of most of them due to the blossom end rot they got. I hope that these tomatoes will actually make it into the next salad.
While attending to my potato plants I found this little fella. The potato made it straight to the kitchen where it got marinated in a bit of olive oil and salt and went on to the grill.
The other potato plants are also starting to loose their leaves and turn yellow brownish. This is a good sign that soon we will be able to harvest some awesome potatoes.
The big planting pot is now used as an intermediary composter because I know from my old days when I had a garden on the ground that the pumpkins love the soil high on nutrition. I am collecting smaller kitchen waste and ground coffee and everything I pick apart from the garden.
When the pumpkins are strong enough I am going to replant the 3 strongest ones into these big pots. The soil will be mixed with the soil from the composter.
If I can manage to guide the plants well on the balcony I could end up having a good chance for most pumpkins grown. I certainly will try for the quantity as well. In the category biggest pumpkin I just do not have the best conditions on the balcony.
Me being away for the next 2 weeks and only home for the weekends is also not ideal. But that's life and we gotta handle it as is comes.
