My daughter, Shivon, celebrated her 12th birthday recently. How time flies! My baby is officially a young teen and a fine young lady now. This is her final year in primary school, and she will start her secondary education next year. I took this photo to commemorate her birthday. I noticed she had grown taller, almost as tall as me. I am very petite a.k.a short (150cm), so she could easily surpass me in height in the next few months.
I missed this chubby baby. She was eight months old when this photo was taken. We had her 4 years into our marriage. I had difficulty conceiving, most probably because of my highly stressful job. I had worked full-time for several years before getting pregnant with her. I never talk about this on Hive. I worked as a Research Analyst at an American company, Marsh McLennan, before I decided to quit and become a full-time mom to my kids. But let's not go there now. Perhaps I can talk more about that in one of my future posts.
And the picture on the right was taken on her birthday. Her dad bought her favorite cake - white chocolate and macadamia nuts, from Secret Recipe. We didn't have a big birthday celebration like everyone else's; instead, it was a private event celebrated within the family.
My daughter's birthday fell on a school day, so we decided to postpone the celebration to the weekends. We had asked her what she wanted for her birthday, and she listed several things. Nothing fancy. Just new earphones, a new jacket, and stuff like that.
We decided to bring the kids to Mr. DIY Plus Megastore at MidValley Megamall. Mr. DIY is Malaysia's largest home improvement retailer, and I think they have several outlets in Turkey and Spain too. But why did we shop for gifts in a home improvement store? Well, the shop sells not just hardware but many other things like stationeries, toiletries, toys, and so on.
Mr. DIY Plus Megastore is the largest Mr. DIY outlet in the country. It is located in MidValley Megamall, MidValley City, Kuala Lumpur. We have not been to this part of town since the pandemic, so the kids were excited because it was a rare treat.
Here's a photo of towering office blocks surrounding the area. I was glad we reached the mall before 12 noon because there were plenty of parking spaces. If we were to arrive after 12.30pm, I bet we weren't so lucky. This mall is divided into several zones with thousands of parking bays but never underestimate the weekend crowds who could fill up these bays in no time.
We had no intention of sightseeing other than going to Mr. DIY. So we headed to Level 3, North Court, where the store is located. But before that, we needed to fill our tummies first, so we went to the nearest food court, The Eatery, located at the same level. The food at this mall is often overpriced, but I found that this food court offered reasonably priced food.
There were plenty of stalls with a wide variety of food - Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, western, and of course, chicken rice. We were pleased to see the reasonable food portion and the taste was quite good. My son had a plate of chicken rice and raised his thumb to sign his approval. And my daughter opted to have chicken chop and French fries. After deliberating for several minutes, I decided to have a plate of beef teppanyaki. Japanese teppanyaki is one of my favorite foods, and I often have it whenever we eat out. Whereas my husband had chicken curry with roti. It was a pleasant lunch because of the great taste and reasonable prices.
After filling our tummies, we rested for several minutes before heading to the store. Mr. DIY is located next to Celebrity Fitness and Coffee Bean. The grand entrance with the large signage is very easy to identify, even from a distance.
I took many interior pictures but only shared a couple of them here. The size of the store is very impressive, with countless sections and rows of shelves. They even have a grocery store and frozen food in there! Mr. DIY is famous for its low prices for good quality items, so it is not too far-fetched to say that this is a shopping paradise for bargain hunters.
I told my daughter to hunt for the items on her list, and she wasted no time and headed to their respective sections. She even politely asked if she could have a cat plushy, which I obliged.
After going through rows of countless shelves, it was time to pay for our purchases at the self-checkout counter. I forgot to bring our recyclable shopping bags and had to pay for the plastic bags 🤦♀. My daughter took a picture of me carrying our purchases while waiting for their dad to pay the parking fees.
We probably spent almost two hours in the store, and the kids were slightly tired and thirsty. I told them we could stop for a drink somewhere nearby our apartment, where it was a lot cheaper than at this mall. I took a quick selfie just for fun 😆.
So that's it for our weekend birthday celebration for my daughter. She didn't get everything she listed but was grateful for the simple gifts we bought for her today - new earphones, a cat plushy, a small backpack, and some sweet and snacks, and of course, a great time with family. 😃.
That's it for now. If you read this far, thank you. I appreciate it so much! Kindly give me a follow if you like my content. I mostly write about making art, life musing, and our mundane yet charming family life here in Klang Valley, Malaysia.
