REDFISH RALLY 500 ~ SUMMER EDITION: PERIOD 3 : MOVIE/MUSIC (July 27 - August 9, 2020)
In the Terminal, one of the ways of implementing the goals of the Redfish Rally means the Terminal staff works tirelessly to bring exercises they call "challenges" to its participants that are both educational and fun.
This challenge is one of the fun exercises to complete. Since I love music and watch movies occasionally, I decided to join in. Also, movies and music can be used to identify an individual's preferences and learn a bit more about them.
Movies can be defined as:
a type of visual communication that utilizes the recording of moving images and sound to tell a story and that people watch on a screen or television.1
I'm from the old school of movies and film. I love black and white, silent, westerns, classics such as Casablanca and Cleopatra, science-fiction, and pre and post-apocalyptic movies.
There are very few movies I have watched that I deem worthy of mention in the apocalyptic category.
MOVIE: I AM LEGEND
This movie is classified as a sci-fi thriller. I would also place this film in the category of post-apocalyptic. I say this because the story begins after a deadly, re-engineered virus intended as a cure for cancer, has infected 99% of the world's population. Ninety percent has died; 9% is infected and turned into zombie-like, cannibalistic creatures known as "Darkseekers".2 Less than 1% of the population is immune and trying to stay alive and out of the reach of the mutants. The virus affected the Darkseekers' mind and body. They're sensitive to light, so they dwell in dark places.2

This 2007 movie features:
Will Smith (Virologist, Dr. Robert Neville)
Alice Braga (Anna Montez - survivor)
Charlie Tahan (Ethan - survivor)
Salli Richardson-Whitfield (Neville's wife)
Willow Smith (Neville's daughter)2
Neither the movie nor concept is new. In fact, I Am Legend was the fourth adaptation from the 1954 book and character, Robert Neville, by Richard Matheson. In his book he questioned what would the world be like if vampires took over.
This theme was popular as the following three movies borrowed heavily from Matheson's original concept:
- Vincent Price: Last Man On Earth (1964)
- Charleston Heston: The Omega Man (1971) - excellent movie.
- Cillian Murphy: 28 Days Later (2002-UK; 2003-US)2
The setting of I am Legend takes place in New York City. We see Dr. Robert Neville escorting his family to a military transport to safety, but learns later they died in the helicopter accident. Also immune to the virus and believing he's the last man alive, for three years, he sets out to find food, supplies, and a cure.

While battling hostile Darkseekers, he manages to construct a device and place it on a pier where he makes a daily recorded broadcast for any uninfected humans who is still alive to let them know they are not alone. He includes a contact location in the message.
He captured several Darkseekers over the years for his research and testing, but to no avail. This time, he manages to capture a female mutant but is caught off guard entering their domain. He barely escapes, but daylight is fading. He's rescued by two immune humans (Anna and Ethan) who heard his broadcast and attempts to find him. They arrive just in time to help him get back home. However, the Darkseekers now know their travel route and are headed to Neville's location once night falls.
Neville is finally able to adjust the vaccine and cure the female Darkseeker. He's able to get her blood sample and give it to Anna, securing her and Ethan before the Darkseekers break through his secure glass barrier in his lab. He sacrifices himself to get the cure to the other immune humans.
I am Legend was the seventh highest grossing film of 2007. The film's version of how the story ended was heavily criticized for its deviation from the original ending in the book.2 I don't agree with the critics. Were it not for Neville's testing on the captured female Darkseeker, he may not have been able to find a cure if he released the female to her mutant companions who came to retrieve her.
Music is defined as:
vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.1
I have specific tastes in music. Being a Baby Boomer, one of my favorite genres is Rock and Roll. With that said, I give you a glimpse into my collection with a fabulous female rocker who exhibited not only a talent onstage, but also a philanthropic responsibility offstage.
JOAN JETT and the Blackhearts

Joan is an American singer, songwriter, composer, producer, and record label owner. She started her music career as a teenager. She was the founding member of her first rock and roll group, The Runaways.3
Not having tremendous success, the group did record a hit single Cherry Bomb. The group eventually broke up, and Joan started her solo career.
Her next project was to form her band The Blackhearts. With this group, Joan became the leader singer with recognition of her talents that led to hit singles and albums. Her album "Bad Reputation," was a success.
But her second album with this group, I Love Rock and Roll was highly successful partly due to the single with the same title. The song I love Rock and Roll held the Top 10 single spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks in 1982. Joan's other hits include "I Hate Myself For Loving You," "Dirty Deeds," "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)," and a remake of Tommy James "Crimson and Clover." 3

Not only was Joan an avid feminist, her ownership of a record label "The Blackhearts" served as a conduit for young girls to find a place where they could express themselves and feel comfortable in their work environment. She participated in numerous USO/Armed Forced Entertainment tours in support troops. She is also an activist in Farm Sanctuary. Finally, her music has been featured in several films.4
In 2015, Joan Jett and The Blackhearts were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.2
