The King of Fruits
Durian is commonly found across South East Asia as it is native to Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand. In many western media, they mention durian as smelly, stinky, and terrible. But from its origin countries, a lot of people enjoy eating durian. It has a variety of flavors from sweet to sour to bitter. The one I got today was a mixture of sweet and a bit bitter. The smell itself wasn’t strong. I typically love the smell of durian. I reckon, if there are people who try durian and say it’s bad, they probably just get a bad durian. I remember eating durian that tasted like strong liquor and was way too bitter. That was probably the worst durian I had. But today’s durian was good. It wasn’t too sweet nor too bitter, just the way I like it. In Indonesia, they have many durian products. There was once durian coffee as well. What I like the most is durian ice cream and pie. If you haven’t tried, you probably should.
There’s one tip that I got told by my parents to rinse off the smell of durian from our fingers. So basically, all you have to do is pour some water on the inner part of the durian, rub your fingers around it and wash your hand. I don’t know where they know about that but that’s what I learned since I was a kid. It always works like a charm.
My mom told me that if a house is infested with mice, leave durian rinds around some spots and it works as mouse repellent. One thing I learned too, never ever put durian inside a car and leave it for too long. My parents did it a few times and the car smelled like durian. It wasn’t just one but around 10 durians. So, you can imagine the strong odor coming from them.
