I went home last week to celebrate my mom’s 53rd birthday. It ended up as a surprise visit as I wasn’t really planning to go home due to unforeseen circumstances but as luck has it, the universe found a way for me to be able to spend the weekend with my family.
My mom’s birthday was last April 15, we start the day by going to church and we head to the public market afterwards. We bought some meat and other ingredients for our simple celebration. We were able to buy a big yellow fin tuna too that we later grilled in the house. I was really happy when we were able to go home with that tuna as I am always craving for fresh seafood back in the city and of course I was also excited to eat the food my mom cook, when you live alone in the city you would really realize how delicious homecooked meals are especially when it’s cook by your mom. This is really something that I miss.
For the dessert, I ordered an Ube Cake from my friend and it was really delicious. The design was simple, but it tasted heavenly. I’ll give it a personal rating of 9/10. We started the birthday party in the afternoon and my mom invited some friends over. Most of them were are relatives that live near our house while some were her college friends. I was just happy to see her smile and be happy on her special day, I know that she and her friends really had a great time.
It was such a great feeling to see her enjoying her birthday with the people she loves. As we celebrated my mom’s birthday, I couldn't help but think of all the sacrifices she had done for us while we were growing up. She got widowed at a young age and had to raise all three of us alone and without any stable job, looking back I am really amazed at how she did it. It’s like she had a magic to make everything seem to be fine, I couldn’t help but think how she was able to budget for food and for the house bills during those times.
It was like magic.
She really worked hard to provide for our family, and she always put our needs before her own. She is the strongest and most caring person I know, and I couldn't be more grateful to have her as my mom. One of my dreams is to take my mom on a vacation to some faraway place. I am still saving up for it, but I hope by her next birthday, it will be a reality. She deserves to just to sit back and be pampered every once in awhile.
I am really grateful for all the moments that I am able to spend with my family and all I can pray is for them to be always safe and healthy and to have more celebrations in the future. I hope you also get to spend time with the people you love and always show that you appreciate them.
