Over thinking everything. Indecision at its finest. Anxiety over the future and what it holds. In a world that sells fear, the runaway mental train is a very real possibility.
What's the best manner of overcoming fear? Action! Taking the necessary steps in life ensures there will be a roof over your head and food on the table. Trapped in our own thoughts enables the anxiety that always seems to follow.
Fear brings up the rear and it's the real Medusa. Panic may drive a person to action but fear can turn us to stone.
Three Frogs On A Log
The story goes like this:
Three frogs were sitting on a log floating in a pond. One made a decision to jump off. How many frogs were left sitting on the log?
I'll give you a hint if you hadn't already guessed or heard the tale before. Making a decision may often precede action, but it isn't action. It's still only thought.
Break it down to the great teachings of Physicist Isaac Newton who proved the properties of Kinetic vs Static energy. One has the energy of possibility while the other is the energy of motion.
If you your answer is three, you are correct. One of the frogs did some thinking but none jumped off the log. Meanwhile, there are tons of flies on the brushy shoreline.
Baby Steps
Remember the movie 'What About Bob?' with Bill Murray? It's a classic (and coincidentally played over and over during the birth of our 1st son).
The film highlights Bill Murray's character who is basically afraid of everything. He has to learn to take literal baby sized steps due to fear paralysis.
It may not be that tiny little footsteps will cure the deeper fears that stall us. Any kind of inaction that sits on the edge of our conscience is a hindrance to personal growth.
This isn't a lecture by any means. At the ripe age of 47, I still fight taking the necessary actions in certain regards.
Self Esteem Comes After Action - Not Vice Versa
As it's Sunday and sunny outside, I'll keep it short. Allow me to wind down with a few last thoughts (actions by my fingers!).
Books upon books sit in lost archives. They attempt to teach people how to feel better about themselves by changing the way they think. I'm still searching for the person who can prove that one worked.
In my worst moments of self despair, it wasn't thinking that got me out of my own shit. It was nothing short of action upon action, and then more action.
In some of my upcoming articles, I'll share with you how badly I fucked things up once I did start taking those actions. I thought I was worse off until I started to see my failures as opportunities.
But more on that when it's not Sunday and the sun isn't calling to come out and play.
Thanks for reading and as always...
