It's strange how our tastes change as we get older. We had rhubarb growing in our garden when I was growing up. A great big patch of them. My mum and dad loved rhubarb, and as far as I can remember, so did my two brothers. But I hated it.
It wasn't just that it has a sour taste, no matter how much sugar you add to it, it was also its texture. Sort of stringy and slightly slimey. For most of my adult life I had continued my dislike of this plant. Actually, I'm not sure of the classification of rhubarb , it isn't a fruit although its it's eaten as a dessert, but it's not really a vegetable either as it's not eaten with the main course.
Anyway, as I said, I had avoided this stuff since I was a kid. However a few years ago I decided to give it a try. Just in case my taste had changed. Amazingly I liked it.
We have a patch of rhubarb in our garden, it was already here when we moved into our property 15 years old. We have a good crop of it this year. So today my wife made a rhubarb crumble. I prefer crumbles to pies, at least when it comes to desserts. Of course, we had to have custard with it as it helps to balance out some of the sourness of the rhubarb. I'm sure we will have many more of them over the summer.
Do you like rhubarb?
All pictures were taken by me, all of the cooking was done by wife, and all the rhubarb crumble featured in the post was eaten by both of us!
