Entendemos que la tradicionalidad es propia de las prácticas culturales desarrolladas en una región determinada, aunque existen casos en los que algunas tradiciones no distinguen fronteras ni mucho menos territorios para lograr cautivar e impregnar con su pura esencia a toda una sociedad, tal es el caso de la Navidad.
We understand that tradition is typical of the cultural practices developed in a given region, although there are cases in which some traditions do not distinguish borders, much less territories, in order to manage to captivate and impregnate a whole society with its pure essence, as is the case with Christmas.
Originalmente esta tradición cultural fue concebida dentro del cristianismo con el fin de que sus seguidores se apartaran de las prácticas “paganas”, en virtud a la doctrina y el criterio de los líderes religiosos de la época, vinculadas al solsticio de invierno para así celebrar la llegada de Jesús al mundo cada 25 de diciembre, de hecho, el termino proviene del latín “nativitas” que significa “nacimiento”, aunque históricamente esta práctica fue introducida por primera vez en Latinoamérica gracias a los conquistadores españoles hace más de cinco siglos en la isla que hoy comparten Haití y Republica Dominicana, pero sería un siglo más tarde que se celebraría una Navidad verdaderamente americana por los aztecas influenciados por el proceso de evangelización impulsado por los colonos, y fue a partir de allí que las costumbres empezaron a ser transformadas en relación al tema y se adoptó una variedad de elementos autóctonos de cada región que dieron como resultado lo que hoy conocemos como Navidad y nuestra forma particular de celebrarla muy alegremente y en plena armonía.
Originally this cultural tradition was conceived within Christianity with the purpose that its followers would move away from "pagan" practices, in virtue of the doctrine and criteria of the religious leaders of the time, linked to the winter solstice in order to celebrate the arrival of Jesus to the world every December 25th. In fact, the term comes from the Latin "nativitas" which means "birth", although historically this practice was first introduced in Latin America thanks to the Spanish conquerors more than five centuries ago in the island that today is shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic, but it would be a century later that a truly American Christmas would be celebrated by the Aztecs influenced by the process of evangelization promoted by the colonists, and it was from there that the customs began to be transformed in relation to the theme and a variety of elements native to each region were adopted, resulting in what we know today as Christmas and our particular way of celebrating it very happily and in full harmony.
Ahora, para añadirle un tinte más personal al asunto debo decir que no me considero una persona necesariamente religiosa, aunque sí muy espiritual, como he dicho en repetidas ocasiones, y pienso que a pesar de que esta celebración se encuentre ligada a la religión también considero que en virtud de su propia forma goza de un espíritu único e invaluable debido a que fomenta los valores de unión, amistad, generosidad, reconciliación, colaboración y familiaridad, pues eso simplemente siempre contribuirá a representar un bien mayor para todos nosotros, para nuestras familias y para el mundo en general.
Now, to add a more personal tint to the matter, I must say that I do not necessarily consider myself a religious person, although I do consider myself very spiritual, as I have said on many occasions, and I think that although this celebration is linked to religion, I also consider that in virtue of its own form it enjoys a unique and invaluable spirit because it promotes the values of union, friendship, generosity, reconciliation, collaboration and familiarity, since that will simply always contribute to representing a greater good for all of us, for our families and for the world in general.
Tanta ha sido la evolución, al menos en el caso de mi país y su afable gente, que básicamente hemos desarrollado un sentido de pertenencia único con la celebración que de una u otra manera nos puede llegar a distinguir del resto al momento de compartir nuestra rica cultura con los demás; desde la creación de platillos endémicos y música folclórica hasta la adopción de pequeños rituales y costumbres decembrinas que sugieren la llegada y permanencia del espíritu navideño, un ejemplo notorio de ello es el pan de jamón al lado derecho del plato y las gaitas zulianas que honran nuestra herencia artística y tradicional como nación orgullosa.
Such has been the evolution, at least in the case of my country and its friendly people, that we have basically developed a unique sense of belonging with the celebration that in one way or another can set us apart from the rest when sharing our rich culture with others; From the creation of endemic dishes and folk music to the adoption of small rituals and customs that suggest the arrival and permanence of the Christmas spirit, a notorious example of this is the ham bread on the right side of the plate and the Zulian bagpipes that honor our artistic and traditional heritage as a proud nation.
Pero, ¿qué sería de la Navidad sin su respectivo árbol lleno de luces y la tradición de recibir regalos debajo de él? Ciertamente sus orígenes responden a raíces germánicas, aunque dicen que el primer árbol de Navidad se dio a conocer cuando un famoso obispo y mártir inglés del siglo VII, mientras daba un sermón a una comunidad druida, cortó un árbol sagrado denominado como “Árbol del Universo” y en su lugar lo reemplazó plantando un abeto que posteriormente adornaría con velas y manzanas como símbolo del amor de Dios sobre la vida, pues cualquiera que sea el caso lo cierto es que resultó ser una tradición que trascendería de generación en generación y se extendería a nivel global hasta la actualidad.

En nuestro caso, esta tiende a ser una práctica muy afianzada en mi familia, pues desde que tengo uso de razón no ha habido una Navidad en la que no hemos puesto el árbol. De hecho, cada año, a mediados de diciembre, tendemos a reunirnos todos en casa para adornar el viejo árbol de plástico que mi madre aún conserva con luces, guirnaldas y flores mientras mi hermana hornea sus famosas tortas negras y destapamos una buena botella de vino para compartir en familia. Otra tradición que guarda una estrecha relación con dicho árbol y que he venido observando en los últimos tiempos dentro de la sociedad venezolana es la de la foto tradicional de Navidad que consiste en sencillamente posar solo o en compañía de familiares y amigos durante la nochebuena y capturar ese momento para la posteridad, para recordarlo o incluso para compartir en nuestras redes sociales, una foto parecida a la que verás a continuación.
In our case, this tends to be a well-established practice in my family, for as long as I can remember there has not been a Christmas that we have not put up the tree. In fact, every year, in mid-December, we tend to gather at home to decorate the old plastic tree that my mother still has with lights, garlands and flowers while my sister bakes her famous black cakes and we uncork a good bottle of wine to share with the family. Another tradition that is closely related to the tree and that I have been observing lately within the Venezuelan society is the traditional Christmas photo that consists of simply posing alone or in the company of family and friends on Christmas Eve and capturing that moment for posterity, to remember it or even to share in our social networks, a photo similar to the one you will see below.
Debo decirlo, me encanta la Navidad, más allá de que se vea como una tendencia comercial y mediática, ya que es una época de paz y unión, pues vengo de un hogar donde se me inculcó que la familia es uno de los aspectos más importantes de la vida, el hecho de tener un espacio ideal que se preste para la sana convivencia, el oportuno intercambio de experiencias y el cultivo del amor en compañía de mis seres queridos es una de las cosas que me confieren una especial felicidad y gratitud por estar rodeado de personas tan maravillosas y enfocadas en la construcción de una de las cuestiones más necesarias sobre este mundo: el bienestar colectivo.
I must say, I love Christmas, beyond the fact that it is seen as a commercial and media trend, since it is a time of peace and union, since I come from a home where I was instilled with the idea that family is one of the most important aspects of life, the fact of having an ideal space that lends itself to healthy coexistence, The timely exchange of experiences and the cultivation of love in the company of my loved ones is one of the things that gives me a special happiness and gratitude for being surrounded by such wonderful people and focused on building one of the most necessary questions about this world: the collective well-being.
Otra tradición bastante presente en mi vida y en mi hogar, así como en el de la mayoría de los venezolanos, es la hallaca, ¿sabes a lo que me refiero? Similar a un tamal, la hallaca es un platillo navideño típico de Venezuela, proporcional al zakuski ruso o el caldo de cappelletti italiano, se trata de una porción rectangular a base de harina de maíz sazonada con onoto hervida en agua, rellena con guiso de carne de res, cerdo y pollo, pigmentada con papas, cebollas, pimentones y tradicionalmente envuelta en hojas de plátano atadas con pabilo. Para nosotros, más allá de ser un platillo, se trata de un elemento referencial que le añade sentido a lo que realmente somos y es nuestro país: un compendio de fusión cultural que enmarca el proceso de mestizaje que tanto nos identifica y nos permite coexistir en armonía, pues entre sus ingredientes también destacan las pasas de los romanos, las aceitunas de los griegos y las alcaparras de los árabes, así como la misma carne de res de los pobladores españoles y la masa de maíz envuelta en hojas de plátano que simboliza las raíces indígenas que todos compartimos. Un aspecto más a agregar en este contexto es que la sola idea de reunirnos para preparar nuestras hallacas y compartirlas con otras familias funge como un ritual renovador adquirido por la sociedad venezolana que prevalecerá a perpetuidad y en cierto sentido tal hecho puede asociarse con nuestra propia forma de ser; personas amistosas y gentiles.
Another tradition quite present in my life and in my home, as well as in most Venezuelans', is the hallaca, do you know what I mean? Similar to a tamale, the hallaca is a typical Venezuelan Christmas dish, proportional to the Russian zakuski or the Italian cappelletti broth, it is a rectangular portion made of corn flour seasoned with onoto boiled in water, filled with beef, pork and chicken stew, pigmented with potatoes, onions, peppers and traditionally wrapped in banana leaves tied with pabilo. For us, beyond being a dish, it is a reference element that adds meaning to what we really are and what our country is: a compendium of cultural fusion that frames the process of mestizaje that so much identifies us and allows us to coexist in harmony, since among its ingredients also stand out the raisins of the Romans, the olives of the Greeks and the capers of the Arabs, as well as the same beef of the Spanish settlers and the corn dough wrapped in banana leaves that symbolizes the indigenous roots that we all share. One more aspect to add in this context is that the mere idea of getting together to prepare our hallacas and share them with other families functions as a renewal ritual acquired by Venezuelan society that will prevail in perpetuity and in a certain sense such fact can be associated with our own way of being; friendly and gentle people.
Para no extenderme más de la cuenta lo más probable es que en una próxima oportunidad retome este tema para seguir comentándoles sobre mi innegable fascinación por dicha celebración y el inmenso agrado que me invade al momento de compartirles un poco sobre las tradiciones culturales que me identifican como venezolano y principalmente como habitante de este gran orbe, recuerden que todos y cada uno de nosotros poseemos raíces dignas de apreciar con una historia detrás que puede llegar a relacionarnos, pues la idea es esa: aportar nuestro granito de arena de manera positiva para así edificar las bases de una sociedad pluralista, nutrida y sobre todo trascendental.
