The recent monsoon season rains have really helped the local Arizona landscape to show its wildflowers in all their glory, although they are easily missed unless you head off the beaten track.
Here the Pine Spiderwort (Tradescantia pinetorum) is in full bloom alongside Lynx Creek near Prescott under the canopy of the thick pine forest.
Not only is this small plant beautiful in appearance, but useful as well.
A passage from Wild Edible Plants of Arizona:
All parts of Spiderwort are edible, either fresh or cooked. Needing no preparation, the entire aboveāground young plant (flower, stem, and leaf) is simply picked when encountered and eaten raw. Some parts may be a little fibrous, but nevertheless, the plant is pleasant tasting.
Not exactly a stomach filling meal but the forest provides a bounty or edibles for both human and animals.
