Sometimes we remain prisoners of situations or events, or impossibilities! It is impossible for me to part with the images and memories of the short trip to Balchik, on the Black Sea. It is impossible for me but I also like to stay a little longer by the sea, even if now it is only through photos and memories. Fortunately, very fresh memories!
For the usual Wednesday walk, I mean more like following 's recommendations and #WednesdayWalk, another story about a walk and what I found remarkable about it.
When I'm in the happy situation of walking in foreign places, the walk means discovery for me, if I'm walking there for the first time, or experience, if the places are familiar and I've walked there before.
In the small seaside town of Balchik, I have been so many times that I know most of the places as well as I know the neighborhood where I live in Bucharest. Because I know that I will still visit Balchik, I don't know how many times, it doesn't depend so much on me as on my health, I always leave small parts unexplored, so that I can still have surprises and desires to come back.
When you're on holiday every trip is a walk. I often choose to have my hotel far away from the breakfast place so that every morning we have a long walk. Recently (i.e. last year) I discovered a street away from the pedestrian promenade, a high street, where the sea can be seen differently. It has become a favorite place for a morning walk...
Although it is a street very close to the tourist side with hotels and restaurants, there is a park there and in the back, you can see the white calcareous hills, hills that made Balchik to be called the White City, this street is deserted. Nobody drives on it. It is perfect for a quiet walk and relaxing on a bench, looking at the sea!
In the distance, we can see the bay that shelters Balchik and the sea that calls us here every summer.
We also have a favorite bench, never occupied by anyone else when we pass by...
...this is the stop before breakfast. A stop to look around, not just at the sea. Balchik has a lot of greenery and it's a pleasure to rest your eyes on it, especially for city dwellers like us.
Moreover, we always look at the houses that are visible, lost in the greenery on the hill. We talk about how much we wish we could live there too. We missed this "train", we should have thought of it about thirty years ago, then we could have bought a house there.
Too much dreaming always stimulates hunger and hunger stimulates walking. This is the Blue Lion Restaurant (the white-columned building partially covered in green ivy), where we like to eat. Always on the terrace (because only the terrace is open). I don't know why.
We'll skip breakfast and restaurant, as this will be the subject of another episode of the Balchik Series. Now we need to get closer to the sea and the morning coffee!
I like the streets that go down to the sea. I can say they've become something of an obsession for me. This happened many decades ago when I saw the film French Lieutenants Woman. In this film, I saw an image that made an impression on me. A street going down to the sea, but it was filmed at such an angle that the sea looked like a wall, you couldn't see the sky. I searched a lot through youtube and clips from this film and managed to find the sequence and photograph it. The quality of the photo is very bad but I hope you can get an idea... This was the image in the film, and in front, blue was the sea.
The street we walked down in Balchik was not so steep that I can recreate the image from the film but I think I got a little closer.
I saw a parrot!
No, I didn't see myself in a mirror.
There really was a parrot in the yard.
We came to a place buried in greenery that I think is a remnant of the old town.
How I love this house! It's uninhabited, I don't understand why but I'm sure it has an interesting history.
The old and the new, what a difference. In the background is an old house from the last century and on the right a corner of a new but unfinished and abandoned building. Probably the contractor either ran out of money or built without permission!
We walked this time behind these trees. Now we descended to the sea, the sea that is right here.
The sea of tourists, the commercial sea, the sea of holidays, the sea of pleasures...
The sea of terraces, the sea of cafés. Our target after breakfast is always coffee. Morning coffee!
But the morning coffee will be a new episode too, so Wednesday's walk ends here. Not before we look out to sea again.
This time a little angry but just as beautiful!
