Here I am doing a #Wednesdaywalk for the first time. I will be walking laps Inside the Offutt AFB, Nebraska Field House. It's the largest among the United States Department of Defense fitness centers in the world. I am actually doing this during my lunch hour. There is no need to get in a car to get here as my work location is located on the side of the building.
I will take pictures through out my walk of this amazing facility. It's a huge old aircraft hanger converted into a gym on steroids. Everything imaginable for any gym goer. It's both part of history and place to get you in tip top shape.
Walking down the hallway just after entering the facility are some historic pictures hanging on the wall. Construction of this building was done in 1942 to store completed B-29 aircraft used in World War II. Yes, the two aircraft that dropped the atomic bombs were modified in this old hangar. Across base is another building where they were built.
First thing to see for athletic activity is a pool. Not an ordinary pool it's an actual sized Olympic pool. Since I went during lunch time there was no activity here.
If you like to hit balls with a racket than this gym will satisfy you Pictured above is a full sized tennis court. There are two of them. Also pictured our some racquet ball courts. There are four of these in this gym. Not many gyms have full size tennis courts.
Need to work on that muscle tone? Well it's not short on weight machines and free weights. Though not all pictured there are 12 squat racks and numerous benches. Really there are machines for every muscle you can imagine.
You think this gym is running out of room yet? Well not even close yet. There are two volleyball courts and two basketball courts. I really like the basketball court set up. On the one side of each court are cardio equipment like tread mills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, and others. So if you want you can work out while watching pick up games.
The area that takes up the most floor space is the indoor soccer pitch. Other than soccer this is used by military units to gather together to conduct physical training for hundreds of it's troops.
Just beyond the soccer pitch is the end of the building. Here you will find a cross fit/tactical fitness area, and a martial arts/boxing area. The cross fit/tactical fitness area contains many different things such as tires, sledge hammers, boxes, ropes, weight sleds, and more. The martial arts area contains mats for jujitsu, judo, and wrestling. Also in the corner is an assortment of punching and kicking aids to take some frustration out on.
Probably the best feature of this gym is it's walking and running track. One lap is 0.4 miles. There are markings on the floor so you know how far you have come along. Several of them indicating distances anywhere from 0.5 to 5 miles and in kilometers as well.
Want to get some batting practice in? Maybe your kid is in a hitting slump. Well there is a small batting area just for this.
Also pictured is some cardio equipment. There are many areas with this type of equipment. If you can't find available equipment just keep walking eventually you will find one to use
I didn't get too much of a workout today but I did manage to walk a total of 4 laps. This gym even though it is massive can get packed. I avoid going before and after work because this is when it is at it's busiest. I am so lucky to have such an amazing fitness facility so close to me. The best thing it's completely free of charge!! I hope you all enjoyed my walk and I look forward to reading some of yours. Take care and be safe. Love you all ❤️
