Hello to everyone in this community, anime lovers, and especially art lovers! I recently shared an illustration I did of another Ai Yazawa character, whose image I found on social media and whose identity I wasn't entirely sure of. Around that time, I also came across another image that I loved, but this time I knew who it was: Midori Saejima, the protagonist of the manga Tenshi Nanka Janai, which has an OVA that I watched and found interesting.
I haven't read the manga yet, but I fell in love with that colorful illustration, with Yazawa's signature style. I wanted to use the watercolors she'd given me to practice, so I thought the best thing to do was paint colorful pictures that I really liked. Believe me... when I saw that illustration, it was like being struck by Cupid's arrow, haha 💘
It's worth mentioning that, although I have special watercolor paper (which was also a gift), I'm determined to finish using a sketchbook I bought a while ago. It's not thick enough for watercolors, haha, but I was confident I could do the drawing on it. So, I started sketching with a mechanical pencil. I wasn't obsessed with making it perfect, because I knew I could ruin it while painting, and I didn't want to stress about it too much, haha.

Once I had the sketch, I was quite excited to start painting, especially the green parts, since I had a variety of shades in my watercolors. I started with the darker tones, like browns, and then added some blue. I wasn't entirely convinced by what I was doing, but when I do these kinds of activities, I try to turn off my critical thinking to avoid abandoning the drawing, haha. Once I had a layer of watercolor over the character, while it was drying, I moved on to the background... As you can imagine, the paper was suffering and begging for mercy, so I had to leave the drawing for another day while it dried.
Applying the next layers of paint always excites me, because that's when I really start to see the drawing with hope, haha. I admit that I don't really know if my technique using watercolors is correct (in fact, I think it isn't, because I use them as if they were acrylic paints, haha), but anyway, I fell in love with the pink tones and painting the accessories like the necklace, the hat, and the flowers on the shirt... even though they turned out quite uneven, haha.
Then came the part where, if I didn't have faith in the illustration, I regained it: outlining. In other illustrations I've done, I haven't needed to outline, but in this case, I saw it as necessary, since I needed to define the paint splatters I had made, haha. For this, I used dark brown watercolor.
Next, I added the shadows and highlights with colored pencils. For the highlights, I used white acrylic paint. I love how the drawing feels so alive afterward, and it makes me feel that the whole process was worthwhile and that it was the right decision to continue until the end ✨
After looking at the drawing and comparing it to the reference, I can see the differences, and I'm also aware that I still have a ways to go before I can handle watercolors in a way that doesn't make me panic at some point, haha. But I congratulate myself on the effort I made, and I hope that if you feel like drawing, you go for it. Whatever the result, it will be valuable because you tried 💕

¡Hola a todos los integrantes de esta comunidad, amantes del anime y sobre todo del arte! Hace poco les mostré la ilustración que hice de otro personaje de Ai Yazawa, cuya imagen encontré por redes sociales y cuya identidad, no estaba del todo segura. Pues, en ese tiempo, también me hallé con otra imagen que me encantó, pero que sí sabía de quién se trataba: Midori Saejima, la protagonista del manga Tenshi Nanka Janai, el cual tiene una OVA, que fue la que vi y me pareció interesante.
Aún no me he leído el manga, pero quedé enamorada de esa ilustración tan colorida, con ese estilo tan característico de Yazawa. Quería aprovechar las acuarelas que me había regalado para practicar, así que pensé que lo mejor, era pintar imágenes coloridas y que me gustasen mucho, créanme... cuando vi esa ilustración, fue como si recibí un flechazo de amor jaja 💘
Cabe mencionar que, aunque tengo papel especial para acuarela (que también me regalaron), tengo el empeño de terminar de usar un block que compré hace un tiempo y que, no tiene el grosor necesario para trabajar acuarelas jaja pero tenía la confianza de que podría hacer el dibujo allí. De esa forma, comencé haciendo el dibujo con portaminas. No me enfrasqué en que fuese perfecto, pues era consciente de que podía estropearlo al pintar, así que no quería sufrir tanto en ese caso jaja.

Al tener el boceto, estaba bastante emocionada por comenzar a pintar, sobre todo las partes con color verde, pues tenía variedad de tonos entre las acuarelas. Primero comencé con los tonos oscuros, como los marrones y luego con algo de azul. No estaba muy convencida de lo que estaba haciendo, pero cuando hago esta clase de actividades, procuro de apagar mi pensamiento crítico para evitar abandonar el dibujo jaja Cuando ya tuve una capa de acuarela sobre el personaje, mientras se secaba, pasé al fondo... Como podrán imaginar, la hoja quedó sufriendo y pidiendo clemencia, así que tocó dejar el dibujo para otro día, mientras se secaba.
Colocar las siguientes capas de pintura siempre me emociona, pues es cuando en verdad comienzo a ver el dibujo con esperanza jaja Admito que no sé realmente si mi técnica usando las acuarelas, es correcta (de hecho, creo que no lo es, pues las uso como si fueran pinturas acrílicas jaja), pero bueno, me enamoré de los tonos rosados y de pintar los accesorios como el collar, el gorro y las flores de la camisa... aunque me quedaron bastante irregulares jaja.
Luego, vino la parte en donde, si no le tenía fe a la ilustración, la recupero: Delinear. En otras ilustraciones que he hecho, no he tenido necesidad de delinear, pero en éste caso, lo veía necesario, pues necesitaba definir los manchones de pintura que había hecho jaja Para ello, usé la acuarela de color marrón oscuro.
Lo siguiente, fue realizar las sombras con crayones de madera, así como las luces. Para esto último, utilizo pintura acrílica de color blanco. Me encanta como el dibujo se siente lleno de vida luego de esto y me hace sentir que todo el proceso, valió la pena y que fue una decisión acertada el continuarlo hasta el final ✨
Tras observar el dibujo y compararlo con la referencia, soy capaz de encontrar las diferencias, así como, ser consciente de que aún me falta para poder manejar la acuarela de una forma que no me haga entrar en pánico en algún momento jaja pero, me felicito por el esfuerzo que hice y espero que si tienes deseos de dibujar, vayas a hacerlo, sea como sea el resultado, será valioso porque lo intentaste 💕
