Greeting fellow readers
Sorry for the late update. I have suddenly found myself being a foster mother to a baby rat and five baby mice, post in coming about that adventure.
Today's update is small, but Friday's will be longer. I hope you all enjoy what I managed to post today!
It wasn’t the pain that first woke Saita but the feeling of choking. Then the pain floored her. Her eyes snapped open, pain-filled tears already in them and a scream building in her chest. But she couldn’t scream, she couldn’t move, she couldn’t even breathe. Her vision was blurry, and her eyes hurt from the light.
“I know it hurts Saita.” Came a soft voice to her right. “But we need to talk.”
She couldn’t even turn her head without pain screaming in her ears.
“Try not to move too much.” Said the same voice.
A large hand covered her left hand, and Doran stood up. She wanted to say something but try as she might nothing came from her mouth, and fresh tears came to her eyes. She wanted to apologise for what she had said in her anger. He looked so worried, and it concerned her.
“I’m not going to beat around the bush.” He said softly. “I am going to tell you what is happening, and then I am going to ask you a question, and you must answer me. One squeeze for yes and two for no, okay?”
She didn’t want to answer questions. She wanted to know where her mother was and if she was okay. She wanted to know why she was in so much pain and why she couldn’t breathe or move. She tried to take her arm back as Doran lifted it, but she was too weak.
“The beast that attacked you broke the central disc in your chest. The System is trying to repair itself, but it can’t do it alone. It is eating away at your marks, and soon it will start draining you of your own energy until nothing remains and you will die.” Said Doran. “Do you understand?”
She weakly squeezed once.
“I know you have had hell these last seven years, and before that, it wasn’t easy, and I know… I know you long for death.”
She felt herself pale, she couldn’t believe that Jethron had told him. Tears ran from her face.
“It is difficult to ask this of you, but I must.” Now there were tears in his eyes. “I need you to want to live. To want to stay with us and fight. I need you to tell me that you don’t want to die like this. Please.”
She didn’t answer, there was no question.
“But what I am about to ask of you is so terrible that I don’t know if I even have the words to do it.” Doran used his spare hand to cup her face. “So, before I do, I will let you know that Pura and Myla are alright. They are mostly uninjured and very, very worried about you.”
She squeezed his hand, that was what she wanted to know.
Doran took a deep breath, closed his eyes, swallowed, and explained what Jethron’s plan was. She immediately tried to pull away from him, horrified that they wanted her to go through all of that again. To feel that pain again. She couldn’t, she wouldn’t, she would rather die. But those weren’t just words now.
If she didn’t allow this, she was going to die. She could finally leave everything behind and be at peace. It was a nice thought, but then she remembered the look on her mother’s face when she had whispered her last words. One of shock, yet there had been a smile. Her mother hadn’t hated her. She had been scared, as scared as Saita was now when her husband had been hurt. She had said everything in fear, not anger.
Then there was her son. She wanted to see him again, she missed him, missed his voice, missed the way his hair smelled, and his smile. His father’s smile. She missed all of it. She had a future, it wasn’t long, but she had one. She could be with her family again but…
Her thoughts drifted, and she struggled to rein them back in as Doran looked to her other side. “Aren’t you going to contribute?”
“I am not going to force her to make a decision that could leave her in agony while dying. If she wants to fight for her family, then she will fight. Whether I ask her to or not.”
Bolx! She tried to move her head to see him, but she was unable to. She hadn’t wanted to get close to him and was terrified of the repercussions it would bring with her messed up life, but he had sought her out time and time again to not only offer friendship but more. He didn’t want to use her, even now, he was not willing to beg her to do this because he knew what it would mean. The Fell Dragon was coming, and he wasn’t going to beg her to save her own life just to be used as a weapon.
“She wants to see you, Bolx.” Came another voice.
This was Sash, Saita was sure of it.
“Make it quick because I do not feel comfortable with her heart rate being that high.”
She felt a strong hand grip her right leg, and Bolx stood up. He looked at her for a few seconds then wiped away a tear. “You do what you need to, Saita. No one should have to ask more of you.”
“Bolx!” groaned Doran. “I need her to want to live.”
“You can’t force her.” He said as he squeezed her leg. “You are asking her to put herself through trauma, and what about Jethron? He too will share her fate. Is that fair on him?”
Saita wanted to reach for him, but her right arm was completely immobile, and the pain was starting to become unbearable.
“What do you want, Saita?” asked Doran. “Do you want to fight?”
Can I even fight?
The thought scared her for a moment. She knew she had been hurt and seriously so, but she was not aware of her injuries. Would she still be of use to anyone after the System was fixed?
“Yes.” Said Sash. “If you heal, you will fight again.”
You can hear my thoughts?
“Don’t tell anyone, okay? I like being a doctor.”
With terror and pain fuelling her, she squeezed Doran’s hand once.
I mean, what choice does she really have at this point? It's either agree or die, nothing in between. Let's see where this leaves her on Friday.
For those of you who have never heard of Fell Dragon you can find Book 1 here, Book 2 here and the start of Book 3 here. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. I love discussing my books!
As the series continues, it will combine with another book series I wrote. To avoid confusion about what is happening, introductory chapters will be introduced separately so that you don't have to be lost. However, these chapters will contain spoilers. You can find these chapters here:
