Greetings all
No rest for the wicked! As soon as Book 5 wraps up, Book 6 is ready to drop. Just a warning about the last part of Saita's story, it's going to get really, really dark, so...be prepared for that.
Even Cupcake has taken to hiding in the blankets, despite the weather hitting the low 30s.
Please enjoy the start of Book 6, and I'll see all of you on Tuesday again!
Bolx was watching the human coronation with the rest of his family. He half chuckled when he saw how uncomfortable Saita looked in her coronation clothing. The pained face she wore changed to one nearly filled with terror when the simple circlet made of silver was placed on her brow by King Pura.
“You had the same look on your face when Pakaz crowned you.” Chuckled Baks as he half grinned at Saasha.
“Urgh, I’d rather not think about that day, thank you very much.” Groaned Saasha as she tapped a finger on the table before her.
The Queen seemed to be in deep thought and was only half listening to what was being said in the live recording. Pura had invited her to be at the coronation, but she had declined to be there in person as she was still trying to figure out how she was going to train Saita. She had agreed to witness the crowning from her planet though.
She had been rash in saying she would handle Saita’s training, but in reality, she had no idea how she was going to do it. She glanced up at Bolx and found him mesmerized by the close-up of Saita taking some kind of vow before her people. She knew that look. It was the same look their father gave their mother, and the same look Saasha had often seen on Brucel’s face. He truly loved the girl with everything he had.
“What was she like?” asked Saasha suddenly.
The rest of their family who had been happily chatting around the table fell silent. They knew who she was addressing, and they all were wondering the same thing.
“To understand what she was like, you have to understand what she had gone through to reach the point when we met.” Said Bolx as he continued to look at the screen.
“We are running out of time.” Said Saasha. “I need to know how to get her to control what is inside of her.”
Bolx remained silent for a long time and took a deep breath before turning his back on the broadcast to look at his older sister.
“It’s not going to be easy. A lot of it will come down to the abilities she has and will learn.”
“How did the two of you meet for the first time anyway?” asked Siar as she grinned at her brother.
Bolx blushed and muttered, “I was wondering when someone was going to get round to asking me that.”
“I can only assume it was under completely different circumstances than what we’re under now.” Said Saasha with a grin, “And now I’m pretty curious myself. You seem very well acquainted with her.”
Now every member of his family, Gatex included, turned to look at him. Bolx knew it was only a matter of time that he would have to tell this tale.
“I met her when she was about 16, about eight years ago in my time. I was 20.”
“Hold on.” Siar interrupted him, “That doesn’t make any sense.”
“The age difference?” queried Gatex.
“Yes. I mean, here she’s 24, right? That makes her three to four years older than us. Yet in Bolx’s time, he was older than her. I don’t get it.”
“I can only assume your mother and I decided to have you three earlier.” Said Baks and he looked up at his youngest son.
“I would guess. I never thought of the age difference until right now.” Said Bolx sarcastically, “Can I continue with my tale?”
Those around the table nodded their heads and Bolx continued, “Things had started to get bad as the Fell Dragon’s minions were becoming more and more abundant. Lardan was on the throne, Saasha had been dead for some time, Brucel was barely keeping the family together, and I had lost my family to the wasting disease the year before.”
That seemed to startle his brother and younger sister, both of whom stared at him intently.
“I was in the Guard, I had a wife and a two-year-old daughter. They were of the first to pass of the disease that ran rampant before we knew what was happening. It took a while, but I came to terms with what happened. I had to. Our species was being heavily preyed upon and anyone that could fight had to.”
Baks couldn’t help but hear the bitterness in his son’s voice. He knew the pain of losing a partner and a babe. His first wife and child had also passed soon after the birth. Bolx took a deep breath and looked up at Saasha.
“One of the orders that I was under was to find anyone who could help us face down the creatures that seemed to have it out for us. Between me, Brucel, my father, and Gatex, along with several other prominent Saith were to find anyone willing to help. I was weeks away from home with a handful of Guard when we were cornered by the Wolven. Outnumbered three to one, I didn’t think we were going to make it.”
Bolx remembered the cold of the planet he had been on. The agony of his wounds and the terror of those with him, knowing they were facing their death. He couldn’t help but grin a little when he remembered the day he had first laid eyes on her.
“I didn’t know her as Saita. I knew her by the name her parents gave her. Her life was very different from what it had been here.”
“Stop stalling and tell us.” Grinned Siar.
“It’s long.” Warned the soldier.
“Until Saita joins us, we have the time.” Said Saasha.
Bolx took a deep breath and started his tale.
Finally, we get to hear more about Bolx's past, and let me tell you, it's a doozy!
