Tenerife offers a great variety of trails. If you are one of those who like to explore and explore nature, you will love this trail. In the south-east of the island, there is an area that stands out for its desert landscapes, vegetation, and rocks that give the place a scenery that looks like from another planet. In addition, in the middle of it all, there is a small volcano thanks to which the area is the way it is.
Tenerife ofrece una gran variedad de senderos. Si eres de los que les gusta explorar y recorrer la naturaleza, este sendero te va a encantar. Al Sur-Este de la isla hay una zona que destaca por sus paisajes desérticos, vegetación y rocas que dan al lugar una escenografía que parece de otro planeta. Además, en medio de todo ello, hay un pequeño volcán gracias al cual la zona es como es.
"Malpaís" is a local word for any place of volcanic origin that is very unfriendly or hostile to human activity. The first time I heard or read it was here, in the Canary Islands. If you walk around this place, you will immediately understand that it is a beautiful, wild place, but where it would be difficult to live. Luckily, enjoying these landscapes through the trails that cross it is possible. The sea is also nearby, so this place lacks little to provide good views.
"Malpaís" es una palabra local designada a todo lugar de origen volcánico el cual es muy inhóspito u hostil para la actividad humana. La primera vez que la escuché o leí fue aquí, en Canarias. Si recorres este lugar, inmediatamente comprenderías que se trata de un lugar hermoso, salvaje, pero donde sería difícil vivir. Por suerte, es posible disfrutar de estos paisajes por medio de los senderos que lo atraviesan. El mar también está cerca, por lo que poco le falta a este lugar para brindar buenas vistas.
It is not a really big area, since its origin was thanks to a small volcano that erupted thousands of years ago and made the landscape what it is today. Between the volcano and the sea there is barely a kilometer and a half. The trail that we have traveled runs around this small volcano. However, it is not the only trail in the area. There is a longer route that does not go around the volcano but reaches the sea and after crossing the coastline returns back to the volcano. In the map below you can see the route (in red). On another occasion, we will walk the longer route.

Entre el volcán y el mar hay a penas kilómetro y medio. El sendero que hemos recorrido transcurre alrededor de este pequeño volcán. Sin embargo, no es el único sendero del lugar. Existe una ruta más larga que no rodea al volcán sino que llega hasta el mar y tras recorrer la línea costera vuelve a regresar al volcán. En el mapa de abajo se puede apreciar la ruta realizada (en rojo). En otra ocasión recorreremos la ruta más larga.

At the base of the hill, you can see dark areas that appear to be remnants of ancient eruptions. Dark-colored volcanic sand is also present on the trail, as we will see in other photographs. Places like this provide a unique atmosphere, away from the noise of civilization and enjoying unique landscapes.
Este recorrido fue realizado en sentido anti-horario alrededor del volcán. No se debe caminar mucho para toparse con las primeras pistas de que el lugar alguna vez estuvo activo. En la base de la colina se pueden observar áreas oscuras y que parecen ser remanentes de antiguas erupciones. La arena volcánica de color oscuro también está presente en el sendero, como veremos en otras fotografías. Lugares como este brindan una atmósfera única, lejos del ruido de la civilización y disfrutando de paisajes úncos.
As for the temperature of the place, I must say that it was quite bearable for a desert site. This hike was done on the least hot days of the summer, so personally, I would not recommend it in the middle of a heat wave, but on a normal day it is quite enjoyable. The short trail around the volcano is practically flat, with slight ups and downs. You can run into many people jogging, and even walking their pets. This trail wears out your shoes, so it is advisable to wear good shoes.
En cuanto a la temperatura del lugar, debo decir que estaba bastante soportable para ser un sitio desértico. Este recorrido fue realizado en los días menos calurosos del verano, por lo que personalmente no lo recomendaría en medio de una ola de calor, pero en un día normal es bastante disfrutable. El sendero corto alrededor del volcán es prácticamente plano, con leves subidas y bajadas. Puedes toparte con mucha gente trotando, e incluso paseando a sus mascotas. Este sendero desgasta los zapatos, es recomendable llevar buen calzado.
The trail is very well delimited by rocks all along the way. The forks in the trail also have good demarcation, although it is also advisable to know the specific names of the place, or at least have a photo of the trail map handy. However, because of the smallness of the desert, it is easy to locate the correct path. These detours connect with other routes in the area.
El sendero está muy bien delimitado por rocas a lo largo de todo el camino. Las bifurcaciones del camino también tienen buena demarcación, aunque también es recomendable conocer los nombres específicos del lugar, o al menos tener un foto a mano del mapa del sendero. Sin embargo, por lo pequeño del desierto es fácil ubicar el camino correcto. Estos desvíos se conectan con otras rutas del lugar.
Halfway through the trail, the landscape changes a bit, as the amount of vegetation increases considerably. The landscapes in this section are the most picturesque. The sand becomes finer and of a dark/grayish color, while the views of the sea increase. In the background, it is possible to observe next to the sea a small urban locality, called Puertito de Güímar. In this locality, it is possible to access another hiking route in this area, which runs along the sea.
A la mitad del recorrido, el paisaje cambia un poco, pues la cantidad de vegetación se incrementa de forma considerable. Los paisajes en esta sección son los más pintorescos. La arena se vuelve más fina y de un color oscuro/grisáceo, mientras las vistas al mar se incrementan. Al fondo, es posible observarjunto al mar una pequeña localidad urbana, llamada Puertito de Güímar. En esta localidad es posible acceder a otra ruta de senderismo de esta zona, la cual se recorre junto al mar.
There is an area in the middle of the trail that passes through a viewpoint made up of the ruins of some ancient structure. From here the trail becomes very interesting, as we begin to see more abandoned remains of ancient structures. At the beginning of the trail, it was already possible to see some remains of abandoned concrete aquifers, probably worn out by the action of erosion and the proximity to the sea. On the horizon, we can already begin to appreciate the industrial zone of Güimar, located to the north of the Malpaís de Güímar.
Hay una zona en medio del recorrido que pasa por un mirador conformado por las ruinas de alguna estructura antigua. A partir de aquí el recorrido se vuelve muy interesante, ya que empezamos a visualizar más restos abandonados de antiguas estructuras. Al inicio del sendero ya era posible ver algunos restos de acuíferos de concreto abandonados, probablemente desgastados por la acción de la erosión y la cercanía al mar. En el horizonte, ya podemos empezar a apreciar la zona industrial de Güimar, ubicada al norte del Malpaís de Güímar.
This was the area of the trail that is perhaps the most abrupt due to the irregularities of the road, but nothing that can not be easily negotiated. The end of this section is when the trail crosses what appears to be the remains of a stone house, or some particular structure, already in ruins. From here, we enter the final stretch of the trail, which runs along a stone wall on the left until we reach the end.
Esta fue la zona del sendero que quizás es la más abrupta por las irregularidades del camino, pero nada que no se pueda sortear fácilmente. El final de esta sección se da cuando el sendero atraviesa lo que parece ser los restos de una casa de piedras, o alguna estructura particular, ya en ruinas. A patir de aquí, entramos en la recta final del sendero, la cual transcurre junto a un muro de piedra a la izquierda hasta llegar al final.

Desert flora adorns this place as well as the presence of the typical lizards that exist practically all over the island. The Malpaís de Güímar is a spectacular and at the same time inhospitable place, with unique desert scenery.

La flora desértica adorna este lugar así como también la presencia de las típicas lagartijas que existen en prácticamente toda la isla. El Malpaís de Güímar es un sitio espectacular y a la vez inhóspito, con escenarios desérticos únicos.
