It is a pleasure to greet you again, my friends from #Hive, and especially all travel lovers.
During this week, for work reasons, I am in Portugal 🇵🇹 and more specifically in the city of Lisbon. I travelled to this wonderful city on Monday afternoon from Asturias by plane with a stopover in Barcelona.
Unfortunately, there was no other possible combination. After a short delay at Barcelona airport, I arrived at Lisbon airport at 11 p.m. local time. Once I had collected the luggage I had checked in, I found the counter of the car rental company and after a short wait I was given the keys of a very nice Citroën C4 equipped with mirrorlink, which allowed me to arrive easily guided by the GPS to the Hotel Vila Gale Opera. This hotel has all the amenities I need, a very good breakfast and the rooms are very well equipped.
Due to hard work in the lab on Tuesday and Wednesday, I had not been able to do any sightseeing in the city today. After finishing my work at 6 p.m., I got behind the wheel of the Citroën C4 to go to one of the most beautiful districts of Lisbon, the Belém district.
In this neighbourhood, I had made the following list of charming places to visit during the week:
- The Belém Tower.
- The Belém lighthouse.
- The monument to the discoveries.
- The Jerónimos Monastery in Belém.
- Pastry shop of the famous Belém cakes.
Today, because I was travelling by car, I visited the Belém Tower, the lighthouse and the monument to the discoverers. The reason why I only visited these 3 places is that the other two places are on the other side of the road and the train also passes through their median, so getting from one to the other side of the neighbourhood was complicated and it was also late for me to return to the hotel to rest after the day's work.
Belém Tower
This tower is located at the mouth of the Tagus River. It is a tower from the 16th century and like all towers from that period, it was a defence tower for the city against invaders. According to the information you can read on one of the signs in the vicinity, the tower was used as a prison and also as a tax collection centre to gain access to the city of Lisbon.
Apart from the Tower, I loved the parks surrounding the Tower full of trees that provide wonderful shade on hot summer days like today.
Belém Lighthouse
800 metres from the Belém Tower, we came across the Belém lighthouse. It is a small lighthouse that is currently not in operation. It is built in stone and brick and is more modern than the Belém Tower.
Monument to the Discoveries.
I loved photographing this monument and I found it to be a real work of art and architecture. The sculpture itself represents a caravel where different personalities related to the period of the discoveries of the Portuguese sailors all over the world are represented on both sides of the caravel. At the front, in the stern, stands Henry the navigator and in the rear view of the monument a large sword can be seen.
As these three monuments are located on the banks of the Tagus river, I also took the opportunity to take some photos from the promenade where you can see in the background the 25 April bridge, which is more than 2 kilometres long.
Finally, to recover my energy, I went to a small restaurant in the Belém district and enjoyed a Bacalao com natas (cod with cream).
Tomorrow, I hope to be able to visit the other two points of interest in Belém and share them with all of you.

Encantado de saludarles de nuevo mis amigos de #Hive, y en especial a todos los amantes de los viajes.
Durante esta semana, por motivos laborales, me encuentro en Portugal y más concretamente en la ciudad de Lisboa. Viaje a esta maravillosa ciudad el lunes en la tarde desde Asturias en avión haciendo escala en Barcelona.
Por desgracia, no había otra combinación posible. Tras uno pequeño retraso sufrido en el aeropuerto de Barcelona, llegue al aeropuerto de Lisboa a las 23 h hora local. Una vez recogida la maleta que había facturado, localicé el mostrador de la empresa de alquiler de coches y tras una pequeña espera me dieron las llaves de un Citroën C4 muy bonito y que está equipado con mirrorlink, lo que me permitió llegar guiado por el GPS fácilmente al Hotel Vila Gale Ópera. Este hotel tiene todas las comodidades que necesito, un muy buen desayuno y las habitaciones están muy bien equipadas.
Debido a que el trabajo en el laboratorio durante el martes y miércoles ha sido duro, no había podido hacer turismo en la ciudad en el día de hoy. Tras culminar mi trabajo a la s 18 h, me puse al volante del Citroën C4 con la intención de desplazarme a uno de los barrios más bonitos de Lisboa, que es el barrio de Belém.
En este barrio, me había realizado la siguiente lista de lugares con encanto para visitarlos durante esta semana:
- La Torre de Belém.
- El faro de Belém.
- El monumento a los descubrimientos.
- El monasterio de los Jerónimos de Belém.
- Pastelería de los famosos pasteles de Belém.
En el día de hoy, debido a que me he desplazado en el coche, he visitado la Torre de Belém, el faro y el monumento de los descubridores. El motivo por el que solo he visitado estos 3 lugares, es que los otros dos lugares quedan al otro lado de la carretera y en su mediana también pasa el tren, por lo que el desplazarse de uno al otro lado del barrio fue complicado y también se me hacía tarde para poder regresar a descansar al hotel tras el día de trabajo.
Torre de Belém
Esta torre se encuentra en la desembocadura del río Tajo. Es una torre del siglo XVI y como todas las torres de esa época, era una torre de defensa de la ciudad ante la entrada de invasores. Según la información que puede leer en uno de los carteles que se encuentra en las inmediaciones, la torre fue utilizada como prisión y también como centro de recaudación de impuestos para poder acceder a la ciudad de Lisboa.
Aparte de la Torre, me encantaron los parques que rodean la Torre llena de árboles que proporcionan una maravillosa sombra en los días de calor en los días de verano como hoy.
Faro de Belém
A 800 metros de la Torre de Belém, nos encontramos con el faro de Belém. Es un pequeño faro que en la actualidad no está en funcionamiento. Está construido en piedra y ladrillo que es más moderno que la Torre de Belém.
Monumento a los Descubrimientos.
Este monumento me ha encantado fotografiarlo y me ha parecido una auténtica obra de arte y arquitectónica. La escultura en sí representa a una carabela donde se representa a ambos lados de la misma a distintas personalidades relacionada con la época de los descubrimientos de los marinos portugueses por todo el mundo. Al frente, en la popa, se alza Enrique el navegante y en la visión posterior del monumento se puede ver una gran espada.
Debido a que estos tres monumentos se encuentran en el margen del río Tajo, también he aprovechado para hacer unas fotos desde el paseo donde se puede observar al fondo el puente 25 de abril que tiene una longitud de más de 2 kilómetros.
Finalmente, para recuperar energías, me acerqué a un pequeño restaurante en el barrio de Belém y pude disfrutar de un Bacalao com natas.
En el día de mañana, espero poder visitar los otros dos puntos de interés que tengo anotados en barrio de Belém y poder compartirlos con todos ustedes.
