Road trip to Härjedalen, Sweden
I always get excited when I get a chance to do a road trip. I drove the car, thinking about what new experiences I would have on this trip and what would happen during this trip. We decided to take a road trip to the Härjedalen region for the first time in a long time, maybe because it is not easy to take a vacation in October (the peak of workload usually hits around the time of year), or maybe it was the first time or very long time that I went to the Härjedalen region at this time of the year.
It takes nearly six hours by car from Stockholm to the Härjedalen region. Flights are available from Stockholm to Sveg, but they are small planes, and access from Sveg airport to where we want to visit is not very good, therefore we always travel to the region by train or car.
This is the time of year when we start to feel that the day gets shorter and shorter every day in Stockholm. The temperature is below 15 degrees Celsius, and although it is light outside, even at 20:00 in summer, it starts to get dark after 17:00 this time of year, and the nights feel chilly. The autumn leaves have started to change color a little by little, and I thought it would be like winter when we arrived in the Härjedalen region, as it is usually about 5 degrees colder than Stockholm.
We took breaks and drove safely, and when we arrived at Härjedalen, it was already dark outside and a dim moon was visible in the sky.
The next day it snowed!
We had been told to wear a thick jacket because of the cold weather up there. And when we arrived, I realized that this advice was indeed correct. The temperature outside was already below zero at night, and I could feel a chill in the air.
The day after we arrived, I decided to take a quick walk around the cabin. I was told that "Be careful, bears might be out in the woods this time of year!" by my sambo's dad, so I was a little worried, but decided to go for a walk with a bear-proof bell. (Well, I was not sure if it would work or not, but it's better than nothing, right?) Well, well!
As soon as I entered the forest, I saw many billberries still in the woods. The Swedish word for billberry is "Blåbär (Blueberry)," and unlike the blue berries commonly eaten in Japan, these blueberries have a unique rich flavor. The type of blueberry is also different and is officially called "billberry" ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaccinium_myrtillus ).
There were still plenty of lingonberries left in the woods, which I ate with the meatballs I had yesterday, and I picked and ate them as I walked in the woods. The sweet and sour taste was indescribably delicious, and I was a little worried as I walked along, thinking that bears would probably come to eat them.
Then, to my surprise, it suddenly started raining. Then, after a while, , it started snowing! It was really snowing in October! Well, but it was like cold rain mixed with sleet-like snow and rain. I started to get cold, so I turned back the way I came, thinking that I might catch a cold. Plus, it is really not cool to see bears in the woods, anyways.

It was snowing mixed with sleet, but the surrounding scenery was still breathtakingly beautiful. And, I really thought this area was truly beautiful with different scenery in each season. The trees on the road leading into the forest were beginning to turn red and yellow, and the scenery was truly amazing!
As I was once again entering the forest and taking a shortcut, the rain began to fall even harder. The air in the forest was humid, unlike the city streets, and the forest around me looked like something out of a Ghibli movie "Princess Mononoke". The forest looks like something like Totoro coming out from the woods, or The Spirit of the forest (Kotodama), or a troll living in Scandinavia. The water droplets shining on the moss were very beautiful. As I was taking pictures with my cell phone close by, I saw some droppings nearby and thought, "Oh no, I have to go home soon or I might meet a bear." LOL!
After returning safely to the cabin, I decided to wipe up and take a little nap. I fell asleep to the soothing sound of the rain falling outside. I had a good memory of my first day in Härjedalen.
ヘリエダーレン地方への旅行
車に乗り旅行に行くといつもテンションが上がります。今回の旅行ではどんな新しい経験が出来るのかなと、これから起きる旅行先でのことを考えながら車を運転しました。
久しぶりにヘリエダーレン地方へ車で旅行に行くことにしました。１０月はなかなか休みが取れないからか、この時期にヘリエダーレン地方へ行くのはもしくはとても久しぶりだったと思います。木々が紅葉をはじめ、運転しながら街道には黄色く色づいた樺の木々を見ていました。
ストックホルムからヘリエダーレン地方へは車でなんと、６時間近くかかります。ストックホルムからスヴェグまでは飛行機もあるのですが、如何せん小型機しか飛んでおらず、スヴェグ空港からのアクセスもあまりよくない為、いつも電車か車でヘリエダーレン地方へは旅行に行っています。
ストックホルムはこの時期は少しづつ日の短さを肌で感じる時期になりました。気温は１５度を下回り、夏は２０時でも外は明るいのにこの時期は５時を過ぎた頃から暗くなり、夜になると肌寒く感じます。紅葉も少しづつ始まり、ヘリエダーレン地方はストックホルムより大体、５度前後寒いので着くともうそこは冬の様な気温だろうなと思っていました。
イェヴレを超えた地域からは、スウェーデンではもう「冬」を感じるヒヤッとして空気が漂っており、もうジャケットが無いと寒かったです。
休憩しながら安全運転で走ったのもあって、ヘリエダーレンに着いたときはもう外は真っ暗で、おぼろ月が空に見えました。
次の日は雪が降りました！
「寒いから厚めのジャケットを着てくるようにね！」とは言われていたのですが、到着するとその助言が本当に正解だったとあたらめて感じました。外は既に夜は零度を下回る気温で、ヒヤッとした冷気を感じる気候でした。もう冬です。１０月で、既にそこには「冬」がいました。
到着した次の日は早速、小屋の周りを散策してみることにしました。「この時期は熊が森に出るかもしれないから気を付けてね！！」と笑顔でアドバイスをもらっていたので、少し心配にはなりましたがクマよけの鈴をもって散策に出かけることにしました。「え、本当？」と聞き返すと、真顔で、「本当だよ！」と返信するサンボパパの忠告を胸に、『熊にあった時の対処方法は？』をネットで一応調べてから森へ向かいました。
森に入るとすぐにブルーベリーの実がまだたくさん森に残っていました。スウェーデン語では「Blåbär」と表現するのですが、日本でよく食べる実が白いブルーベリーとは違い、独特の濃い味のするブルーベリーです。種類も実は違って、正式には「セイヨウスノキ（Billberry）」と言うようです。
昨日食べたミートボールと一緒に食べた、リンゴンベリーも森には沢山まだ残っていて、歩きながら摘んで食べていました。甘酸っぱいその味は本当に何とも言えないほどおいしく、きっとこれを食べに熊も来るのだろうなと思いながら少し心配しながら歩いていました。
みぞれ混じりの雪が降ってきたのですが、それでも周りの景色は息をのむほど美しく、やっぱりこの地域は本当に季節ごとに違った景色があり本当に美しい地域だなと感じていました。夏は地平線になかなか沈まない太陽を見ることができ、そして秋には森の幸や冬眠前に活発に動き回る熊たちもこの地域特有の景色なのだなと思いました。森に入るまでの道の木々は紅葉が始まり黄色く染まった木々は本当にきれかったです。
もう一度森に入って近道を通っているとき、さらに雨が激しく降り始めました。森の中は街道とは違って空気が湿気ていて、そして周りにはジブリ映画の「もののけ姫」の様な森が広がって言います。トトロが出てくるか、言霊が出てくるか、または、北欧に住むトロールが出てきそうな森です。コケに光る水滴がとても綺麗でした。携帯を近づけて撮影していると、近くに何かの糞を見つけて、やべぇ、早く帰らないとまじで熊に会うかもと思いさっさと森を出ました。
無事に小屋に帰ってきて、体をふいて少し昼寝をすることにしました。外に降る雨の音が心地よく寝入ってしまいました。１０月のヘリエダーレン地方。良い小旅行の初日の思い出が出来ました。
