A unique culture in Sweden and other Scandinavian countries is snus, which is a sniffing tobacco.　It is similar to the American chewing tobacco, but unlike chewing tobacco, saliva can be swallowed without spitting when a piece of snus is placed in the mouth.

When I come to Sweden, I certainly feel that there are not many people smoking cigarettes, but there are quite a few people using snus instead.　Regulations regarding cigarettes are quite advanced in Sweden as well as in Europe, and there are various restrictions on the price of cigarettes (very expensive!), restrictions on where you can smoke cigarettes, and so on.　However, compared to cigarettes, snus is much less restrictive, and many people use it instead.　From a cultural point of view, one reason may be that Sweden and other Scandinavian countries have a long history of involvement with snus.

Snus is an important part of Swedish culture, and the Snus Museum is located in the city of Stockholm.　Although snus are banned for sale in Europe, they are so popular in Sweden that there is even a museum dedicated to them.

The museum had quite an impressive display of the history of snus, how tobacco is grown and manufactured, and a display of snus containers.　What was particularly interesting was that tobacco was grown in the museum, and dried tobacco leaves were on display.　The curator explained how tobacco is manufactured and shared the seeds with us.　She told us that it seemed to be tobacco that has been grown in the museum in Stockholm for a long time and that we should try growing it at home.

In Stockholm, the temperature warmed up a little in April, so I planted the seeds, and they sprouted beautifully~! Yay!

I am thinking of growing tobacco this year.　I thought it would be interesting to write a blog about the growth of tobacco leaves.

スヌース、嗅ぎたばこ

スウェーデンをはじめ、スカンジナビア地方の独特な文化として、スヌースと呼ばれる嗅ぎたばこがあります。アメリカの噛みたばこに似ているのですが、噛みたばことは違って、スヌースは口の中にいれると唾液を吐かずに飲み込むことが出来ます。

スウェーデンに来ると、確かにタバコを吸っている人が少ないと感じるのですが、その代わりにスヌースを使っている人は結構います。　タバコに関する規制は欧州をはじめ、スウェーデンでかなり進んでいて、タバコの価格、タバコを吸える場所の規制などいろいろと制約があります。　その代わりにスヌースに関しては、タバコに比べるととても緩く多くの使用者がいます。　文化的にみても、スウェーデンをはじめ、北欧地域はスヌースとのかかわりが長いのが一つの原因かもしれません。

スヌースはスウェーデンの大切な文化の一つとして、スヌース博物館がストックホルム市内にあります。欧州内では販売が禁止されているスヌースなのですが、スウェーデン国内では博物館があるほど人気のある趣向品になります。

博物館内ではスヌースの歴史、タバコの育成方法や製造方法、スヌースの入れ物の展示など、結構見ごたえのある展示内容になっていました。　特に面白かったのが、博物館内でタバコを育成していて、タバコの葉っぱを乾燥させて展示していました。　学芸員の方がタバコの製造方法を説明してくれて、種を分けてくれました。　昔からストックホルムにある博物館で育成しているタバコらしく、家でも育ててみてくださいねと言われました。

ストックホルムでは４月に入り、少し気温も温かくなってみたので、その種を植えてみたのですが、見事に発芽しました～！

今年はタバコを育ててみようかなと思っています。　タバコの葉っぱの成長ブログなんかを書いてみるのも面白いかなと思いました。
