The first university in the state of Sucre: UDO

El rector fundador fue el Dr. Luis Manuel Peñalver. Está ubicada en la Av. Universidad, justo frente a la Playa San Luis.
The University of the East (UDO) is one of the largest and most important public universities in Venezuela and the eastern part of the country. It comprises five campuses or branches distributed throughout eastern Venezuela. Although they belong to the same university, they offer different degree programs, tailored not only to the needs and demands of the student population but also to the employment opportunities available in each state.
La Universidad del Oriente (UDO) es una de las universidades públicas más grandes e importantes de Venezuela y de la región oriental del país. Cuenta con cinco campus o sedes distribuidas por todo el oriente venezolano. Si bien pertenecen a la misma universidad, ofrecen diferentes programas de grado, adaptados no solo a las necesidades y demandas del alumnado, sino también a las oportunidades laborales disponibles en cada estado.
UDO has campuses in Anzoátegui, Bolívar, Monagas, Nueva Esparta, and Sucre. Many of the campuses have branches or extensions outside the state capital, allowing students from smaller towns to access university education without having to relocate to the capital cities, making it easier and more affordable for them.

As I mentioned at the beginning, UDO is a public university, meaning you only pay a simple registration fee each semester. The academic year is structured around a semester, with two semesters and an intensive summer course. Semesters generally begin in October and end in March. Then comes another one in April, which can end in late July or early August. The intensive summer course runs from August to September.

The heart and soul of UDO, without a doubt, are its students: enthusiastic, engaged, curious, and driven young people. Without them, the university wouldn't exist. Young people from all over the country, not just from Sucre state or the eastern region, come with the determination to prepare themselves and become outstanding professionals for the nation.
El corazón y el alma de la UDO, sin duda, son sus estudiantes: jóvenes entusiastas, comprometidos, curiosos y motivados. Sin ellos, la universidad no existiría. Jóvenes de todo el país, no solo del estado Sucre o de la región oriental, llegan con la determinación de prepararse y convertirse en profesionales destacados para la nación.
UDO, in this case the Sucre campus where I work, offers programs such as Bioanalysis, Nursing, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Business Administration, Accounting, Human Resources Management, Education, Sociology, Social Work, and Computer Science, among many others.
La UDO, en este caso el Núcleo de Sucre donde trabajo, ofrece carreras como Bioanálisis, Enfermería, Biología, Física, Química, Matemáticas, Administración de Empresas, Contaduría, Gerencia de Recursos Humanos, Educación, Sociología, Trabajo Social e Informática, entre muchos otros.
It must be said that the original facilities of the Sucre campus, starting around 2017, began to suffer various acts of vandalism that turned them into a wasteland of rubble, a graveyard of scrap metal and books. Libraries, classrooms, laboratories, offices, cafeterias, dining halls, and amphitheaters were destroyed by unscrupulous and uneducated people. Those facilities are still there, waiting to be restored, but also serving as a reminder of the devastating effects of ignorance.
Cabe mencionar que las instalaciones originales del Núcle de Sucre, a partir de 2017, más o menos, comenzaron a sufrir diversos actos de vandalismo que las convirtieron en un páramo de escombros, un cementerio de chatarra y libros. Bibliotecas, aulas, laboratorios, oficinas, cafeterías, comedores y anfiteatros fueron destruidos por personas inescrupulosas y sin educación. Esas instalaciones siguen ahí, a la espera de ser restauradas, pero también sirven como recordatorio de los efectos devastadores de la ignorancia.
Currently, although much remains to be done, the Sucre campus boasts clean spaces, air-conditioned classrooms, restrooms, computer labs, science labs, cafeterias, gardens, recreational areas, and buses.
Actualmente, aunque aún queda mucho por hacer, el campus de Sucre cuenta con espacios limpios, aulas con aire acondicionado, baños, laboratorios de computación y de ciencias, cafeterías, jardines, áreas recreativas y autobuses.
The University of Oriente's slogan is: "We come from the people and we go back to the people." And although UDO has endured many periods of destruction, the principle upon which it began remains its guiding principle: to prepare young people for the future. As long as universities exist in the world, barbarism will never prevail, because as Nelson Mandela said: "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
El lema de la Universidad de Oriente es: «Del pueblo venimos y hacia al pueblo vamos». Y aunque la UDO ha atravesado muchos periodos de destrucción, el principio sobre el que se fundó sigue siendo su guía: preparar a los jóvenes para el futuro. Porque mientras existan universidades en el mundo, la barbarie jamás prevalecerá. Como dijo Nelson Mandela: «La educación es el arma más poderosa que puedes usar para cambiar el mundo».
