Monasterio de piedra | Natural & monumental park 📍 Nuévalos (Spain) [Spa][Eng]

The Monasterio de Piedra is a beautiful site located in the town of Nuévalos in the Aragonese province of Zaragoza.

It is an ancient monastery destroyed and abandoned during the anticlerical revolts of 1835 and was later recovered, designated a national monument and converted into a natural tourist park.

Being privatized, tickets must be purchased on the official website of the park or upon arrival at the park according to availability, access has a standard price of 16.00 € with the exception of children under 11 years and over 65 years who pay 11.00 €. The opening hours are from 09:00 h to 21:00 h.

As it is located outside the city, the most convenient way to get there is by car, in my case, since I don't have one, I opted for public transportation. From the city of Zaragoza there is only one bus of the company Automóviles Zaragoza on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays with departures from the city at 9.00 h and return from the monastery at 17:00 h, the trip lasts approximately two hours and the cost of the ticket is 22,80 €.

I detail this information because it was difficult for me to get it because most visitors go on their own, hence there is only one bus line that offers the shuttle service on peak days. Another option is to arrive by public transportation to the city of Calatayud, which is the closest to the park and where there are more transportation options and schedules to the Monasterio de Piedra.

The first thing you find when you get off the bus is a walled entrance to the enclosure, which takes you directly to the ticket booths and you have the option to start the tour either by the natural park or by the monastery buildings.

Buying tickets online is highly recommended, I went on Sunday and there was a long line to buy tickets on site, so I was able to skip it and save a lot of time by getting them in advance.

El Monasterio de Piedra es un hermoso emplazamiento ubicado en la localidad de Nuévalos dentro de la provincia aragonesa de Zaragoza.

Se trata de un antiguo monasterio destruido y abandonado durante las revueltas anticlericales de 1835 y que posteriormente fue recuperado, nombrado monumento nacional y convertido en un parque natural turístico.

Al estar privatizado hay que adquirir las entradas en la pagina web oficial del sitio o al llegar al parque según disponibilidad, el acceso tiene un costo de 16,00 € y de 11,00 € para los menores de 11 años y mayor de 65 años y suele estar abierto de las 09:00 h a 21:00 h.

Como se encuentra ubicado en las afueras de la ciudad lo más cómodo es ir en vehículo propio, en mi caso al no disponer de coche, opté por el transporte público. Desde la ciudad de Zaragoza sale un único autobús de la compañía Automóviles Zaragoza los días martes, jueves, sábados y domingo con salidas desde la ciudad a las 9.00 h y regreso desde el monasterio a las 17:00 h, el recorrido tiene una duración de dos horas aproximadamente y el costo del billete es de 22,80 €.

Detallo esta información porque a mí me costó conseguirla pues la mayoría de visitantes van por su cuenta, de aquí que haya solo una línea de autobuses que ofrezca el servicio de traslado en los días de mayor demanda. Otra opción es llegar en transporte público a la ciudad de Calatayud que es la mas cercana al parque y en donde hay más opciones de transporte y horarios hacia el monasterio de Piedra.

Lo primero que te encuentras al bajar del bus es una entrada amurallada al recinto, que te lleva directamente a las taquillas de venta de entradas y dispones de la opción de comenzar el recorrido bien sea por el parque natural o por la estructura del monasterio.

Comprar las entradas por la web es muy recomendado, yo fui en domingo y había mucha fila para adquirir las entradas en el sitio, por lo que pude saltármela y ahorrar bastante tiempo teniéndolas anticipadamente.

I decided to start with the tour of the natural park first, so I could do the walk before all the people who were waiting to buy their tickets came in and I could enjoy the scenery without having so many people around me, it was a wise decision although there were already people inside when I arrived, this frustrated me a little when I wanted to take some pictures but I took note for a future visit.

The most impressive thing is that as soon as you enter you can feel the pleasant and fresh natural environment, you can hear the sound of the waterfalls and as you get closer to it you can differentiate one after another the different natural waterfalls that make up the tour, the scenery is breathtaking and the images hardly do justice to such a beautiful tour.

Decidí comenzar con el recorrido del parque natural primero, para poder realizar el paseo antes de que pasara toda la gente que esperaba por comprar su entrada y pudiera disfrutar del paisaje sin tener tanta gente a mi alrededor, fue una decisión acertada aunque ya había mas o menos gente dentro al momento de yo haber llegado, esto me frustró un poco al momento de querer hacer algunas fotos pero tomé nota para una futura visita.

Lo más impresionante es que nada más entrar se siente el agradable y fresco ambiente natural, se escucha el sonido de las caídas de agua y a medida que te acercas a él se van diferenciando una tras otra las distintas cascadas naturales que conforman el recorrido, el paisaje es impresionante y las imágenes difícilmente hacen justicia a tan hermoso recorrido.

One of the most attractive experiences of the tour are its various tunnels and caves, which you can go through to get into the heart of the mountains that make up the road and also to have a different perspective on some of the waterfalls.

The ascent is super narrow and steep, then descending can be vertiginous because the lighting is scarce due to the structure, which in my opinion makes it much more fun has a very mysterious and suspenseful atmosphere.

I was fascinated by the long tunnel that took you inside the highest waterfall called Cola de Caballo because of the effect that the water makes when falling, seeing it from inside is impressive but you have to be careful because you get soaked with the splashing water.

After being inside there is a tunnel that leads you to a lovely panoramic view of the Cola de Caballo from the outside.

Una de las experiencias más atractivas del recorrido son sus diversos túneles y grutas, que puedes recorrer para adentrarte en el seno de las montañas que conforman el recorrido y también para tener una perspectiva distinta en algunas de las cascadas.

El ascenso es super angosto y empinado, luego descender puede ser vertiginoso porque la iluminación es escasa debido a la estructura, lo que en mi opinión lo hace mucho más divertido tiene un ambiente muy de misterio y suspenso.

Me fascinó el largo túnel que te llevaba al interior de la caída de agua más alta llamada Cola de Caballo por el efecto que hace el agua al caer, verla desde dentro es impresionante pero hay que tener cuidado porque te empapas todo con el agua que salpica.

Después de estar en su interior hay un túnel que te conduce a una encantadora panorámica de la Cola de caballo desde afuera.

Later the road leads you to a much quieter place, and you find the Mirror Lake which is a beautiful and super quiet space, this was the place where it was more difficult for me to take a picture because of the crowds of people, it is true that in the tunnels I had to do some queuing and wait in turns to take pictures but here at the lake there was much chaos and I decided to enjoy the moment rather than despair trying to take pictures.

It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen in my life, its name is that because you can see the mountain reflected in the lake which is usually undisturbed. There is a viewpoint at the top of one of the mountains that allows you to appreciate it very well but this time it was closed, like other areas, due to capacity restrictions.

Once I had covered most of the tour, at least all the area corresponding to the natural park and the waterfalls, it was convenient to approach the monastery structure at lunchtime, because next to it is not only the park's hotel but also its commercial area, where there are souvenir stores, snacks and of course a couple of restaurants.

The tourist complex has two restaurants, one is the Reyes de Aragón which belongs to the park's hotel and of which I had good references since I have found it reviewed in some gastronomic guide of Zaragoza. The second option, more economical and therefore crowded at the time of my arrival, is the restaurant Piedra vieja which has a more common and diverse offer, but I left it for a future visit because I did not feel like entering a place so crowded.

Posteriormente el camino te guía hacia un lugar mucho más tranquilo, y te encuentras con el Lago espejo que es un espacio precioso y súper tranquilo, este fue el lugar en el que me costó más hacer una foto por la aglomeración de personas, es cierto que en los túneles tuve que hacer algo de fila y esperar por turnos para hacer fotos pero aquí en el lago hubo mucho descontrol y decidí disfrutar más el momento que desesperarme intentando hacer fotografías.

Es sin suda, uno de los lugares más hermosos que he visto nunca, se llama así porque se puede ver reflejada la montaña en el lago que suele estar imperturbable. Hay un mirador en lo alto de una de las montañas que te permite apreciarlo muy bien pero en esta ocasión estaba cerrado, al igual que otras zonas, por las restricciones de aforo.

Una vez cubierto gran parte del recorrido, al menos toda el área que corresponde al parque natural y las cascadas, coincidió el acercarme a la estructura del monasterio con la hora del almuerzo de manera muy conveniente, pues junto a esta se encuentra no solo el Hotel del parque si no su área comercial, en donde hay tiendas de souvenirs, refrigerios y por supuesto un par de restaurantes.

El complejo turístico cuenta con dos restaurantes, uno es el Reyes de Aragón que pertenece al hotel del parque y del que tenía buenas referencias ya que me lo he encontrado reseñado en alguna guía gastronómica de Zaragoza. La segunda opción, más económica y por tanto repleta al momento de mi llegada es el restaurante Piedra vieja que tiene una oferta más corriente y diversa, pero que dejé para una próxima visita pues no tenía muchas ganas de entrar a un sitio tan lleno de gente.

The menu of Reyes de Aragón is quite extensive, and you can make an interesting tour of the local cuisine with local dishes that have been prepared with great care but I did not want to stay long there to continue with the tour during lunchtime when there would be fewer people doing the tour, so I decided to go for the menu of the day which included three dishes plus drink and where I could also have typical dishes of Aragon.

The combination could be any combination included in the menu and I went for what seemed to me more autochthonous, when I sat down they brought me some olivas as an appetizer which is how they call olives in the area and I asked for water to go with it.

For the first course I chose the migas which is an elaboration, literally based on fried bread crumbs with chorizo, sausage, sausage, grapes and egg, it seems a strange combination but it is very good only that it is quite caloric and very filling, for me it was perfect but if someone asks for it I will probably continue with a lighter dish.

I chose for the second course some pork cheeks in red wine, this is a cut of meat from the face of the pig that is super soft and was prepared with a wine sauce and boletus mushrooms, accompanied with mashed potatoes as a base, very homey flavors.

And for dessert a spectacular Torrija, this dessert made the whole trip worthwhile, I did not expect to leave the meal so happy with a dessert that was not based on chocolate and that being so common here was perfect in this menu. The texture was very smooth and the flavors delicate, the contrast with the red fruits and the dried fruit ice cream was unbeatable, I think a visit to this restaurant is a must to taste this dessert, I swear it is worth it.

I am looking forward to return to Reyes de Aragón because while I was eating my quick menu I was able to look at some dishes that were served different from mine and they looked very interesting.

La carta de Reyes de Aragón es bastante amplia, y puedes hacer un recorrido interesante por la gastronomía local con platos autóctonos que han sido elaborados con mucho cuidado pero yo no quería permanecer mucho tiempo allí para poder seguir con el tour durante la hora de comer en la que habría menos gente haciendo el recorrido, así que decidí irme por el menú del día que incluía tres platos más bebida y en donde podría disponer también de platos típicos de Aragón.

La combinación podría ser cualquiera incluida en el menú y yo me fui por lo que me pareció más autóctono, al sentarme me trajeron unas olivas de aperitivo que es como les dicen en la zona a las aceitunas y pedí agua para acompañar.

De primer plato elegí las migas que es una elaboración literalmente a base de migas de pan frito con chorizo, longaniza (embutido típico), uvas y huevo, parece una combinación extraña pero está muy buena solo que es bastante calórica y llena mucho, para mí estuvo perfecta pero si alguien la pide probablemente continué con algún plato más ligero.

Yo elegí de segundo unas carrilleras de cerdo al vino tinto, este es un corte de carne de la cara del cerdo que es súper suave y fue elaborado con una salsa de vino y hongos boletus, acompañado con puré de patatas como base, sabores muy pero muy hogareños.

Y de postre una espectacular Torrija, este postre hizo que todo el viaje valiera la pena, no me esperaba yo salir tan contenta de la comida con un postre que no fuera a base de chocolate y que siendo tan común aquí resultase perfecto en este menú. La textura era muy suave y los sabores delicados, el contraste con los frutos rojos y el helado de frutos secos era inmejorable, creo que la visita a este restaurante es indispensable para degustar este postre, juro que vale mucho la pena.

Tengo ganas de volver al Reyes de Aragón pues mientras comía mi menú rápido pude mirar algunos platos que servían diferentes a los míos y se veían muy interesantes.

After recharging my batteries I continued with the tour and was able to enter the recovered areas of the monastery, a building that is more than 800 years old and used for some events on certain occasions, an episode of Masterchef Junior Spain was recorded in this location.

They have also enabled some of the rooms as permanent exhibition areas on winemaking and cocoa processing, which was what the monks of this enclosure were dedicated to, they say that this was the first place where cocoa was processed in Europe once brought from the New World and the monks made a kind of tea with it.

The internal gardens are very well kept and share part of the structure of the hotel, it is a beautiful place and has several passages that you can walk between the different rooms.

Después de recargar baterías continué con el recorrido y pude entrar a las zonas recuperadas del monasterio, edificación que cuenta con más de 800 años de antigüedad y que utilizan para hacer algunos eventos en ciertas oportunidades, un episodio de Masterchef Junior España fue grabado en esta locación.

También han habilitado algunos de los salones como zonas de exposición permanentes sobre la elaboración de vino y procesamiento de cacao, que era a lo que se dedicaban los monjes de este recinto, dicen que aquí fue el primer sitio en donde se proceso el cacao en Europa una vez traído del Nuevo Mundo y hacían con el una especie de Té.

Los jardines internos están muy bien cuidados y comparten parte de la estructura del hotel, es un hermoso lugar y cuenta con varios pasadizos que puedes recorrer moviéndote entre los distintos salones.

As we enter the structure that once belonged to the monastery church we are confronted with the devastating image of destruction.

It is here that one really appreciates what they say that only ruins remain of what once was.

It is indisputable that it represents great beauty, and that you can appreciate through the little that remains how impotent it must have been at the time, but it does not fail to convey a certain air of sadness to imagine what could have happened at the time, beyond whether it was fair or not, violence always ends up wreaking havoc in history.

What I found incredible is that this church is still active, maybe not in a public way doing weekly masses but I have seen that they perform weddings and ceremonies in it, I imagine that there will be some agreement with the owners of the enclosure but it is a rather curious fact.

Cuando nos adentramos en la estructura que pertenecía a la iglesia del monasterio nos encontramos con la devastadora imagen de la destrucción.

Es aquí donde se aprecia realmente lo que dicen de que se mantienen solamente ruinas de lo que una vez fue.

Es indiscutible que representa gran belleza, y que se puede apreciar a travez de lo poco que queda lo impotente que tuvo que ser en su momento, pero no deja de transmitir cierto aire de tristeza al imaginar lo que pudo haber pasado en su momento, más allá de si fuese justo o no, la violencia siempre termina haciendo estragos en la historia.

Lo que me pareció increíble es que esta iglesia siguiera activa, quizá no de manera pública haciendo misas semanales pero sí he visto que realizan bodas y ceremonias en ella, me imagino que habrá algún acuerdo con los dueños del recinto pero es un dato bastante curioso.

It has been a wonderful visit, full of pleasant surprises and a unique landscape, almost like a fantasy.

It can be a very pleasant outing to go to rest a weekend in the hotel and tour the surroundings calmly.

It has safety and hygiene measures, I would not recommend it only if you have a knee problem because the climbs can be exhausting and there are quite a few, for those who go out with their pets dogs are allowed inside the park.

In general there is a very good family atmosphere, in the areas before the waterfalls there are some activities for children and animals to take pictures with, if I am not mistaken there is an owl.

I hope to be able to return and visit the sites that were not yet open due to the pandemic.

Ha sido una visita maravillosa, llena de agradables sorpresas y un paisaje único, casi de fantasía. Puede ser una salida muy agradable para ir a descansar un fin de semana en el hotel y recorrer los alrededores con calma.

Cuenta con medidas de seguridad e higiene, yo no lo recomendaría únicamente si tienes algún problema de rodillas porque las subidas pueden ser agotadoras y son bastantes, para los que salen con sus mascotas están permitidos los perros dentro del parque.

En general hay muy buen ambiente familiar, en las zonas previas a las cascadas hay algunas actividades para niños y animales con los que fotografiarse, si no me equivoco hay un búho.
Espero poder volver y recorrer los sitios que por cuestiones de la pandemia aún no estaban abiertos.
