I had read in my guidebook that near Copacabana, the area where I was staying, there was a fortress with wonderful views of the beach and its surroundings, so on my penultimate day in the city of Rio de Janeiro I decided to go there.
Había leído en mi guía turística que cerca de Copacabana, zona en donde me estaba hospedando, había una fortaleza con vistas maravillosas hacia la playa y sus alrededores, así que en mi penúltimo día en la ciudad de Rio de Janeiro decidí ir para allá.
I arrived at Copacabana beach and walked until I reached the Leme area, there at the end there is a rocky hill which is where the Duque de Caxias Fort or Leme Fort is located, one of the oldest military fortresses in the city.
Llegué a la playa de Copacabana y caminé hasta llegar a la zona de Leme, allí en el extremo hay una colina rocosa que es donde se encuentra el Fuerte Duque de Caxias o Fuerte de Leme, una de las fortalezas militares más antiguas de la ciudad.
I started to ascend and when I looked back I was speechless with the views, what my guidebook said was true, from there all the beauty of this natural and urban landscape of world fame unfolds.
Empecé a ascender y cuando miré hacia atrás quedé boquiabierta con las vistas, lo que decía mi guía era verdad, desde allí se despliega toda la belleza de este paisaje natural y urbano de fama mundial.
The paved road to the fort is about 800 meters long and is surrounded by vegetation, making it a very pleasant walk.
El empedrado camino hasta el fuerte es de unos 800 metros y está rodeado de vegetación, por lo que es un paseo súper agradable.
There are several parts with benches to stop to rest and especially to watch.
Hay varias partes con banquitos para detenerse a descansar y sobre todo a mirar.
From here, as is the case in several parts of the city, the monument to Christ the Redeemer is also visible, as well as some favelas (low-income neighborhoods) that people have built among the mountains over the years.
Desde aquí, como sucede en varios puntos de la ciudad, el monumento al Cristo Redentor también es visible, así como algunas favelas (barrios de bajos recursos) que la gente ha construido entre las montañas a lo largo de los años.
I reached the top of the hill and entered the Duque de Caxias Fort, which dates back to the 18th century (it was built between 1776 and 1799) and was made to protect Rio de Janeiro when Brazil was still part of the Portuguese Empire and enemies were stalking it. The entire Guanabara Bay could be watched from here, in its courtyard you can see the cannon batteries.
Llegué a la cima de la colina e ingresé al Fuerte Duque de Caxias, el cual data del siglo XVIII (fue construido entre los años 1776 y 1799) y se hizo para proteger Rio de Janeiro cuando Brasil aún era parte del Imperio Portugués y los enemigos lo acechaban. Toda la bahía de Guanabara se podía vigilar desde aquí, en su patio se pueden observar las baterías de cañones.
The inner part of the fort is also very interesting, its corridors with dim lighting and thick walls, make you feel in another era.
La parte interna del fuerte es también muy interesante, sus pasillos con iluminación tenue y gruesas paredes, te hacen sentir en otra época.
But without a doubt what I liked the most were the panoramic views from there, the beaches, the sea, the islands, the mountains, the city... and although the day was not very clear, the scenery was still spectacular.
Pero sin duda lo que más me gustó fueron las vistas panorámicas desde allí, las playas, el mar, las islas, las montañas, la ciudad… y aunque el día no estaba muy despejado, igual el paisaje se veía espectacular.
I also liked that it is not a very popular or well known place, there were no crowds and that allows you to visit it more calmly and enjoy the different areas more comfortably.
También me gustó que no es un lugar muy popular o conocido, no había multitudes y eso te permite visitarlo con más calma y disfrutar de las diferentes áreas con más comodidad.
At the end of my visit to the fort, the next place I went was the Lapa area, known as the bohemian part of the city. I arrived there by bus and the first thing I did was to have lunch because it was already noon, and then I went through its emblematic arches. It is the old aqueduct built in the mid-eighteenth century that transported water to downtown Rio and other areas. In 1896 it left its old function and became a viaduct, above these arches circulates the famous Santa Teresa streetcar, but I was not lucky enough to see it.
Al terminar mi visita al fuerte el siguiente punto al que fui fue la zona de Lapa, conocida como la parte bohemia de la ciudad. Llegué allá en autobús y lo primero que hice fue ir a comer porque ya era mediodía, y luego pasé por sus emblemáticos arcos. Se trata del viejo acueducto construido a mediados del siglo XVIII que transportaba agua hacia el centro de Rio y otras áreas. En 1896 dejó su vieja función y se convirtió en viaducto, encima de estos arcos circula el famoso tranvía de Santa Teresa, pero no tuve la suerte de verlo.
I then looked at my map to guide me to another popular spot in Lapa, the Escadaria Selarón (Selarón Staircase), a work of street art created over several years by Chilean artist Jorge Selarón, who lived in Rio de Janeiro.
Luego miré mi mapa para guiarme y llegar a otro lugar muy visitado de Lapa, la Escadaria Selarón (Escalera Selarón), una obra de arte callejera realizada durante varios años por el artista chileno Jorge Selarón, quien vivía en Rio de Janeiro.
This work began in 1994 and is characterized by the diversity of tiles from all over the world that the artist placed there over the years and that give color to the street that ascends 215 steps and 125 meters long.
Esta obra la comenzó en el año 1994 y se caracteriza por la diversidad de baldosas o azulejos de todas partes del mundo que el artista fue colocando allí a través de los años y que le dan colorido a la calle que asciende por 215 escalones y 125 metros de largo.
I thought it was great, I had never seen anything like it.
A mí me pareció genial, nunca había visto algo así.
Then I wandered around the area for a while, took some pictures of things that caught my attention like this graffiti, the pharmacy and its peculiar name "Drogasmil" (thousand drugs) and the delicious Beijinhos de coco (coconut kisses) candies.
Después callejeé un rato por la zona, hice algunas fotos a cosas que me llamaron la atención como estos grafitis, la farmacia y su peculiar nombre “Drogasmil” y los ricos dulces Beijinhos de coco (Besitos de coco).
I went back to the hostel to rest a bit and in the evening I went to Lapa again with some Catalan tourists I met when I was in Salvador de Bahia, we met by coincidence on the beach earlier and we arranged to go out and see a bit of the city's nightlife.
Regresé al hostal para descansar un poco y en la noche fui nuevamente a Lapa junto a unos turistas catalanes que conocí cuando estuve en Salvador de Bahía, nos encontramos por coincidencia en la playa más temprano y quedamos para salir y ver un poco la movida nocturna de la ciudad.
As I mentioned before, Lapa is a bohemian area where there are many bars, restaurants and above all live music, I really wanted to listen to samba and bossa nova! There were musicians playing everywhere and in some places you didn't even have to enter because they were playing their songs outside to attract people's attention.
Como mencioné antes, Lapa es una zona bohemia donde hay muchos bares, restaurantes y sobre todo música en vivo, ¡tenía muchas ganas de escuchar samba y bossa nova! Había músicos tocando en todas partes y en algunos locales ni siquiera tenías que entrar porque ellos estaban interpretando sus canciones afuera para atraer la atención de la gente.
Between music, conversations and caipirinhas, midnight came and before going to our hostel by cab, we walked a bit around the area and I took some night photos of part of the Lapa Arches and the Metropolitan Cathedral of Sâo Sebastiâo, the one you see in the last photo with a pyramidal shape, doesn't it look like a spaceship with that lighting?
Entre música, conversaciones y caipirinhas se nos hizo medianoche y antes de irnos a nuestro hostal en taxi, caminamos un poco por la zona y aproveché de hacer unas fotos nocturnas de una parte de los Arcos de Lapa y de la Catedral Metropolitana de Sâo Sebastiâo, esa que ven en la última foto con forma piramidal, ¿no luce como una nave espacial con esa iluminación?
