All regions of the world have a particular dish that characterizes them, something unique that they eat and is their typical dish, in the Orinoco delta the Waraos ethnic group eats moriche palm worm, for them, it is like their dessert or snack between the main meals, This animal contains a high-fat content and some of my travel companions dared to try this exotic delicacy, well I confess that all except for two people did not dare to eat it and I was one of them, sorry I wanted to do it and show the hivers my inner strength and mental control, but I could not, I am weak and my stomach is delicate ha, ha, ha, ha.
Su manjar Gusano de palma de moriche
Todas las regiones del mundo tienen un plato particular que los caracteriza, algo único que comen y viene siendo su plato típico, en el delta del Orinoco la etnia Waraos come gusano de la palma de moriche, para ellos es como su postre o bocadillo entre las comidas principales, este animal contiene un alto contenido en grasa y algunos de mis compañeros de viaje se atrevieron a probar esta delicatese exótica, bueno confieso que todos a excepción de dos personas no nos atrevimos a comerlo y yo fui una de ellas, los siento quería hacerlo y mostrar a los hivers mi fuerza interna y control mental, pero no pude, soy débil y mi estómago es delicadito ja, ja, ja.
To eat the worms they first tear off the head with their teeth or fingers and then chew and swallow them, they can also be fried without oil, since they are cooked with their own fat, but the indigenous people eat them without going through the frying pan, Those who tried it said it was like eating butter and the most uncomfortable thing is the consistency of its fat in the mouth, some felt like vomiting, others had a good time, this experience was very funny especially when the viscera and guts come out of the animal and so they ate them, this is culture, friends.
Para comer los gusanos primero le arrancan la cabeza con los dientes o los dedos y luego los mastican y tragan, también se pueden freír sin aceite, ya que se cocinan con su misma grasa, pero los indígenas los comen sin pasar por el sartén, los que probaron dijeron que era como comer mantequilla y lo más incómodo es la consistencia de su grasa en la boca, algunos les dieron ganas de vomitar otros la pasaron bien, esta experiencia fue muy divertida sobre todo cuando se les salen las vísceras y tripas al animalito y así se los comían, esto es cultura, amigos.
The food of the Waraos is focused on vegetables, they eat a lot of ocumo and rice that they grow themselves, and almost nothing of what they eat is processed or artificial, you might think that they are well-fed, but it is not so, there is a high percentage of malnutrition and infant mortality, this ethnic group is the only one that has survived in this part of the country, adults die before they get old and the only thing that keeps them alive as an ethnic group is the uncontrolled birth rate. They have many problems and indicators to analyze, but as I am not an expert I cannot go deeper.
La alimentación de los Waraos está básicamente enfocada en los vegetales, comen mucho ocumo y arroz que ellos mismos siembran, casi nada de lo que comen es procesado o artificial, se pudiera pensar que están bien alimentados, pero no es así, hay un gran porcentaje de desnutrición y mortalidad infantil, esta etnia es la única que ha sobrevivido en esta parte del país, los adultos fallecen antes de envejecer y lo único que los mantiene vivos como étnica es la natalidad sin control. Son muchos los problemas que tienen e indicadores para analizar, pero como no soy experta no puedo profundizar.
Education
There is a school where the children can learn Spanish because, although they are Venezuelan and live in Latin America, they have an ancestral language that is part of their culture, in that school they can also attend the first years of basic education, a teacher who lives in the space where the school is built and the director who also teaches and attends once a week. The enrollment is small and the only thing that motivates them to attend is the food they are given, they have few books and the space is adequate for the area.
I had a pleasant conversation with the teacher and he showed up in his clean white clothes, barefoot because almost no one wears flip-flops or shoes, and gladly answered all the tourists' questions. Something that caught my attention because there is no electricity there except for this part, nor telecommunications, was a large antenna, they use it for elections, but it is something very curious because the Indians do not know their date of birth, do not know their age, and do not have identity records. The tourists joked that this was the place where they exchange one president for another.
Educación
Existe una escuela donde los niños pueden aprender español porque, aunque sean venezolanos y vivan en América Latina, tienen una lengua ancestral que forma parte de su cultura, en esa escuela también pueden cursar los primeros años de educación básica, en la misma imparte clases un profesor que vive en el espacio donde está construida la escuela y la directora que también da clases y asiste una vez a la semana. La matrícula es pequeña y lo único que los motiva asistir es la comida que les dan, tienen pocos libros y el espacio está acorde para la zona.
Tuve una agradable conversación con el maestro y se presentó con su ropa bien limpia y blanca, descalzo porque allí casi nadie usa chancletas o zapatos y con gusto respondió todas las preguntas de los turistas. Algo que llamo mi atención porque allí no existe la electricidad a excepción de esta parte ni las telecomunicaciones, fue una gran antena, la utilizan para las elecciones, pero es algo bien curioso, ya que los indígenas no saben su fecha de nacimiento, no conocen su edad y tampoco tienen registros de identidad. Los turistas bromeamos diciendo que ese era el lugar donde hacen el cambio de un presidente por otro.
