I have spent about a third of the last three years in Mexico City and yet there are always new neighbourhoods for me to discover in this huge metropolis. After more than a year in Mexico's capital, my girlfriend told me that Tlalpan is not only the name of a notorious main street with a dubious reputation, but also a district that has a centre worth seeing. I was really excited to find out what awaited me in the Centro de Tlalpan. Just read on if you're curious too.
Ungefähr ein Drittel der vergangenen drei Jahre habe in Mexiko City verbracht und trotzdem gibt es für mich in dieser riesigen Metropole immer wieder neue Viertel zu entdecken. Nach insgesamt über einem Jahr in Mexikos Hauptstadt machte mich meine Freundin darauf aufmerksam, dass Tlalpan nicht nur der Name einer berühmt berüchtigten Hauptstraße mit zweifelhaftem Ruf ist, sondern auch ein Stadtviertel, das ein sehenswerten Zentrum hat. Ich war wirklich gespannt, was mich im Centro de Tlalpan erwarten würde. Lest einfach weiter, wenn ihr auch neugierig geworden seid.
Tlalpan is located in the south-west of the urban area and borders Coyoacán to the north. The centre of the district, just like Coyoacán, was once a town in its own right and was simply swallowed up by the sheer unstoppable growth of CDMX over the course of time. When I arrived at Tlalpan's main square, I was immediately struck by the cosy atmosphere, which is reminiscent of a small Mexican town and almost makes you forget that you are in one of the largest metropolises in the world.
Tlalpan liegt im Südwesten des Stadtgebiets und grenzt im Norden an Coyoacán. Das Zentrum des Viertels war genau wie Coyoacán mal eine eigene Stadt und wurde vom schier unaufhaltsamen Wachstum von CDMX im Laufe der Zeit einfach verschlungen. Als ich am Hauptplatz von Tlalpan ankam, fiel mir sofort die gemütliche Stimmung auf, die an eine mexikanische Kleinstadt erinnert und einen fast vergessen lässt, dass man sich in einer der größten Metropolen der Welt befindet.
We walked through the streets, stopped off at a quaint restaurant, strolled through the market hall and the whole time I had it in my head that the neighbourhood looked like Coyoacan's little brother. The colonial architecture is very similar, as is the flair, but Tlalpan is nowhere near as crowded. Once again, I had discovered a neighbourhood in Mexico City that you would hardly find in a travel guide.
Wir spazierten durch die Straßen, kehrten in ein uriges Restaurant ein, bummelten durch die Markthalle und die ganze Zeit über hatte ich im Kopf, dass das Viertel auf mich wie der kleine Bruder von Coyoacan wirkt. Die koloniale Architektur ist sehr ähnlich, das Flair ebenfalls, aber Tlalpan ist längst nicht so überlaufen. Wieder einmal hatte ich ein Viertel in Mexico City entdeckt, das man in kaum einem Reiseführer finden würde.
As befits a typical Mexican town centre, there is also a small park with a pavilion (Kiòsko) and a church with a spacious courtyard surrounded by stone walls. Everything seemed very inviting and well-kept to me. To finish off, we sat down in a café under the arcades on the main square and enjoyed some fresh churros.
Wie es sich für ein typisch mexikanisches Stadtzentrum gehört, befindet sich im Zentrum natürlich auch ein kleiner Park mit einem Pavillon (Kiòsko) sowie eine Kirche, mit einem großzügig angelegten und von Steinmauern umgebenen Innenhof. Alles wirkte auf mich sehr einladend und gepflegt. Zum Abschluss setzten wir uns noch in ein Café unter den Arkaden am Hauptplatz und genossen frische Churros.
Tlalpan really surprised me and I can only recommend that you visit this neighbourhood when you are in Mexico City. This is especially true if you are looking for a change from the more lively districts and want to enjoy some idyllic peace and quiet. The centre of Tlalpan is definitely one of my insider tips for a relaxing afternoon in CDMX.
Tlalpan hat mich wirklich überrascht und ich kann euch nur empfehlen, dieses Viertel einmal zu besuchen, wenn ihr in Mexiko Stadt seid. Das gilt vor allem, wenn ihr ein bisschen Abwechslung zu den quirligeren Stadtteilen sucht und idyllische Ruhe genießen wollt. Das Zentrum von Tlalpan ist für mich definitiv einer der Geheimtipps, für einen entspannten Nachmittag in CDMX.
