When left alone, people are drawn to the stories their brains create, regretting the past and worrying about the future. This wandering around the past and future exhausts the brain and keeps us from happiness. There is no benefit to worrying about the future, which we cannot go back and cannot foretell.
Eighty-five percent of our worries never actually happen.
Dr. Robert L. Leahy's study found that "85% of the anxiety that worriers had did not actually happen and ultimately ended in a positive outcome." Worrying and fretting about the uncertain future can be an unnecessary drain on ourselves.
Use mindfulness and focus on the here and now
I practice mindfulness to calm my mind and focus on the here and now. I believe that mindfulness is a tool that allows us to consciously focus on our breathing and movements, which stabilizes our mind, restores our brain, which is exhausted from wandering in the past and future on its own, and restores it to a normal state.
I have been practicing mindfulness for more than three years now. By focusing on the present moment, I am able to have meaningful time, free from the mental pain of wandering in the past or future.
As I consciously practice mindfulness every day, I have become more sensitive to the most ordinary and trivial things, such as having a refreshing morning or eating a delicious meal. I am now able to feel happiness in my ordinary daily life.
I am now able to focus on each of my actions, which I used to do without thinking from the time I wake up in the morning until I go to bed at night. Through mindfulness, I feel that I am indeed able to live the present moment to the fullest.
