Bones and all is directed by Luca Guadagnino and the screenplay was written by Dave Kajganich based on the novel of the same name by Camille DeAngelis. The first thing I have to say is that it is an unusual plot, even from a very particular genre that I would define as romantic horror or horror romance. Not long ago I reviewed the movie The invitation which mixed a vampire story with a chick flick in a way that didn't appeal to me, but Bones and all does have its appeal, in my opinion. The film tells the story of Maren (Russell), a young woman who is abandoned by her father (her mother left when she was a child) and who finds herself drifting from one moment to the next, because she has to learn to survive. in society, but staying out of it because she hides a secret: Maren is a cannibal. The opening sequence of the film, in which we see her commit the first strange act of what will be two hours of actions not common in our daily lives, is a blow to the viewer.

Lo primero que tengo que decir es que se trata de una trama inusual, incluso de un género muy particular que yo definiría como terror romántico o romance de terror. Hace no mucho tiempo reseñé la película The invitation que mezclaba una historia de vampiros con una chick flick de una forma que no me resultó llamativa, pero Bones and all sí tiene su atractivo, en mi opinión. En la película se cuenta la historia de Maren (Russell), una joven que es abandonada por su padre (su madre se fue cuando ella era niña) y que se ve a la deriva de un momento a otro, pues tiene que aprender a sobrevivir en la sociedad, pero manteniéndose al margen porque esconde un secreto: Maren es caníbal. La secuencia inicial del film en la cual la vemos cometer el primer acto extraño de lo que serán dos horas de acciones nada comunes en nuestra vida diaria, es un golpe al espectador.

Along the way, she finds other cannibals like her and that is how she runs into Lee (Chalamet), a slightly older young vagabond who has lived on the margins for some years. After meeting, they decide to continue together on Maren's journey to find her mother and they travel through a good part of the United States. It is important to note that the film is set in the 1980s, so there is no internet, no cell phones, and no super computers, which gives a more primitive atmosphere to the story in certain ways, reinforced by the wild trait of cannibalism. of the protagonists.

Durante este viaje le ocurren dos cosas a Maren. La primera es que comienza a conocerse mejor, a entender su naturaleza y ese rasgo que la conflictúa porque se siente una buena persona, no quiere hacer daño, pero al mismo tiempo necesita matar a otros para alimentarse (aunque sólo ocasionalmente). Y la segunda es que descubre una verdad que puede resultar consoladora y espeluznante a la vez: no es la única de su especie. Por el camino va encontrando a otros caníbales como ella y es así como se topa con Lee (Chalamet), un joven vagabundo un poco mayor que vive marginado desde hace algunos años. Tras conocerse deciden continuar juntos el viaje de Maren para encontrar a su madre y recorren en ello buena parte de los Estados Unidos. Es importante señalar que la película está ambientada en los años ochenta, por lo que no hay internet, ni teléfonos celulares, ni super computadores, lo que le de una atmósfera más primitiva a la historia en ciertos aspectos, reforzados por el rasgo salvaje del canibalismo de los protagonistas.

Maren & Lee

Despite having a fantastic horror aspect, the plot was plausible to me. I don't care if a story (a book, a movie) is fantastic or tells crazy things, but it has to be coherent in itself and convincing in its arguments. To me, the story of Maren and Lee seemed credible. Strange, yes, unusual, even grotesque in some scenes, painful, but I found it honest and coherent. Of course, the film has some minor flaws (like almost all of them) but I think it manages well the balance between horror and romance, between tenderness and violence, drama and suspense. There are few happy or smiles scenes, but the story is quite hard and in a situation as particular as the one Maren is going through (the flight, the trip, her self-discovery, acceptance problems) it must be difficult to smile frequently.

The Book | El libro

A pesar de tener una vertiente de terror fantástico, la trama me resultó verosímil. No me importa que una historia (un libro, una película) sea fantástica o cuente cosas descabelladas, pero tiene que ser coherente en sí misma y convincente en sus argumentos. A mí, la historia de Maren y Lee me pareció creíble. Extraña, sí, inusual, incluso grotesca en algunas escenas, dolorosa, pero la encontré honesta y coherente. Claro que la película tiene algunas fallas menores (como casi todas) pero me parece que maneja bien el equilibrio entre terror y romance, entre ternura y violencia, drama y suspenso. Hay pocas escenas felices o de sonrisas, pero es que la historia es bastante dura y en una situación tan particular como la que atraviesa Maren (la huida, el viaje, su auto descubrimiento, problemas de aceptación) debe ser difícil sonreír con frecuencia.
