Ahora en cines
Each Marvel movie is an event and fans of the franchise are eagerly awaiting the premiere to see the continuation of this blockbuster cinematic universe that already has almost thirty films. And although I am not a fan of the brand created by Stan Lee, I have several friends who are and who invite me to the cinema for each new film, and how can I refuse?
Cada película de Marvel es un acontecimiento y los fanáticos de la franquicia esperan con ansias el estreno para ver la continuación de este taquillero universo cinematográfico que ya cuenta con casi treinta películas. Y aunque no soy fanático de la marca creada por Stan Lee, tengo varios amigos que lo son y que me invitan al cine a cada nueva película, y ¿cómo negarme?
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the most recent Marvel movie starring Dr. Stephen Strange, former sorcerer supreme and member of the Avengers, who recently made an appearance in Spider-Man: No way home and badly cast the spell that caused the irruption of characters from other universes in ours. Well, this time the multiverse stops being a theory and becomes a reality (within the movie), which represents an opportunity for some, but also a threat because what kind of creatures could break into our universe if there were form? Or even not even creatures or monsters but also those other versions of ourselves, as happened to Peter Parker in the last Spider-Man.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness es la más reciente película de Marvel que tiene como protagonista (o casi) al Dr. Stephen Strange, ex hechicero supremo y miembro de los Avengers, quien hizo aparición reciente en Spider-Man: No way home y conjuró mal el hechizo que provocó la irrupción de personajes de otros universos en el nuestro. Bien, en esta oportunidad el multiverso deja de ser una teoría y se convierte en una realidad (dentro de la película), lo que representa una oportunidad para algunos, pero también una amenaza porque ¿qué clase de criaturas podrían irrumpir en nuestro universo si hubiese una forma? O incluso ni siquiera criaturas o monstruos sino también esas otras versiones de nosotros mismos, tal como le ocurrió a Peter Parker en la última de Spider-Man.
I don't like to make spoilers of the movies that are still in theaters, but expressing my opinion regarding this story without justifying why I think what I think does not seem correct, so I will make as few spoilers as possible, but you are warned. No me gusta hacer spoilers de las películas que aún se encuentran en cartelera, pero emitir mi opinión repecto a esta historia sin justificar por qué pienso lo que pienso no me parece correcto, así que haré la menor cantidad de spoilers posibles, pero están advertidos. Quienes, llegados a este punto, decidan continuar la lectura, lo hacen bajo su responsabilidad: habrá spoilers.
I hadn't seen any trailer before arriving at the cinema and I really liked being surprised by the appearance of América Chávez and, although I already knew that Scarlet Witch appeared, I didn't imagine that she would be the villain of the story (I didn't see Wandavision and I don't know if some of this was announced on that show). Seeing Wanda and Dr. Strange again seemed great to me and gave me the impression that they should have gotten together long before, they are characters that belong to the same class, one could say. I accept the plot and that propellant of the story: Wanda's pain for her unborn children who, however, do exist in other universes and although she manipulates demons to murder a teenage girl in order to be reunited with her own children who were never born seems a bit over the top, we're talking about a universe where a character destroyed half the universe with the snap of his fingers, so anything goes, right?
No había visto ningún trailer antes de llegar al cine y me gustó mucho sorprenderme con la aparición de América Chávez y, si bien ya sabía que aparecía Scarlet Witch no me imaginé que ella sería la villana de la historia (no vi Wandavision y no sé si algo de esto se anunció en ese show). Volver a ver a Wanda y a Dr. Strange me pareció genial y me dio la impresión de que han debido juntarse mucho antes, son personajes que pertenecen a una misma clase pudiera decirse. Acepto la trama y ese propulsor de la historia: el dolor de Wanda por sus hijos no natos que sín embargo sí existen en otros universos y si bien manipular demonios para asesinar a una adolescente con el fin de poder reunirse con unos hijos propios que nunca se han tenido parece un poco exagerado, estamos hablando de un universo en el que un personaje destruyó la mitad del universo con el chasquido de sus dedos, así que todo se vale, ¿o no?
I liked the character of América Chávez and her relationship with Dr. Strange. I liked that Christine came back (reinforcing the sacrifice, a common theme to most superheroes) and I liked the horror movie sequences that gave this movie more darkness than any other in the franchise. At times it seemed that it was not about Marvel but about another of the films by its director Sam Raimi who, although he is responsible for the Spider-Man trilogy with Tobey Macguire, is also the director of Drag me to Hell and the series of TV 50 States of Fright. Also, there are more raw and graphic fight scenes than others in the franchise and seeing Elizabeth Olsen with a cut on her cheek and a bloody face like Stephen King's Carrie was something I didn't think I'd see.
Me gustó el personaje de América Chávez y su relación con Dr. Strange. Me gustó que apareciera Christine de nuevo (reforzando el sacrificio, tema común a la mayoría de los superhéroes) y me gustaron las secuencias propias de películas de terror que brindaron a esta película de una oscuridad mayor que cualquier otra de la franquicia. Por momentos parecía que no se trataba de Marvel sino de otra de las películas de su director Sam Raimi que si bien es el responsable de la trilogía de Spider-Man con Tobey Macguire también es el director de Drag me to Hell y de la serie de TV 50 States of Fright. Además, hay escenas de pelea más crudas y gráficas que otras de la franquicia y ver a Elizabeth Olsen con una cortada en la mejilla y el rostro lleno de sangre como la Carrie de Stephen King era algo que no pensé que vería.
Now, up to that point, the film delivers what was promised: entertainment and a little more darkness than before. But it has a blunder: it is inconsistent with the very universe it represents. In Spider-Man: No way home we saw how three universes intersected and we could see three different Peter Parkers, with three different biographies, in love with three different women (Mary Jane, Gwen, Michelle) and even the villains they faced were different. But why? Because the different universes are subject to different laws and because it is impossible for the same character with the exact same story to exist in two different universes. Put to imagine, it is possible that there are many universes in which Peter Parker is never bitten by the spider and therefore Spider-Man does not exist, or is not him. This all makes sense and is what was shown in the movie before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Ahora bien, hasta ahí la película cumple con lo prometido: entretenimiento y un poco más de oscuridad que antes. Pero tiene una falla garrafal: es incoherente con el mismo universo que representa. En Spider-Man: No way home vimos cómo tres universos se entrecruzaron y pudimos ver a tres Peter Parkers diferentes, con tres biografías diferentes, enamorados de tres mujeres diferentes (Mary Jane, Gwen, Michelle) e incluso los villanos a los que enfrentaron eran diferentes. Pero, ¿por qué? Porque los diferentes universos están sometidos a leyes diferentes y porque es imposible que en dos universos diferentes exista un mismo personaje con la misma historia exacta. Puestos a imaginar, es posible que existan muchos universos en los que Peter Parker nunca sea mordido por la araña y por tanto Spider-Man no exista, o no sea él. Todo esto hace sentido y es lo que se ha mostrado en la película anterior a Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
And yet this time we see how in all the universes that Dr. Strange and America go through there is a Stephen Strange who is identical to the others (except for a few tweaks in the look or clothing), in all of them he is Dr. Strange, in all of them is arrogant, in all of them he was, is or has been in love with Christine, and even in two of them he had a sister who died in the same way... isn't that inconsistent? doesn't it contradict what was presented in Spider-Man? If a small change in a person's life, the most insignificant detail lived in a different way can lead to a completely different life, why are all Strangers the same? I think it is a major flaw in the plot of the film and I am not even comparing it with other types of movies or with another brand but with the information that the Marvel company itself gave us.
Y sin embargo en esta oportunidad vemos cómo en todos los universos que atraviesan Dr. Strange y América existe un Stephen Strange que es idéntico a los otros (salvo unos retoques en el look o en la ropa), en todos es Dr. Strange, en todos es arrogante, en todos estuvo, está o ha estado enamorado de Christine, e incluso en dos de ellos tuvo a una hermana que murió de la misma forma... ¿no es eso incoherene? ¿no contradice lo presentado en Spider-Man? Si un pequeño cambio en la vida de una persona, el detalle más insignificante vivido de una forma distinta puede conducir a una vida completamente diferente, ¿por qué todos los Strange son iguales? Yo creo que es una falla importante en el argumento de la película y ni siquiera la estoy comparando con otro tipo de películas o con otra marca sino con la información que la propia compañía Marvel nos entregó.
Beyond that, the film entertains, the visual effects are very good and, as in other cases, I would say that the one who gives the film the dimension it has is the villain, Scarlet Witch steals the show because without her the film it would not be what it is. The Multiverse represents a great opportunity to exploit the potential of Marvel (if there is anything left after the Avengers) but they will have to improve the writing of their films so as not to make mistakes like the one they made in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, have you seen it yet? Más allá de eso, la película entretiene, los efectos visuales son muy buenos y, como en otros casos, diría que quien le da a la película la dimensión que tiene es la villana, Scarlet Witch es quien se roba el show porque sin ella la película no sería lo que es. El Multiverso representa una gran oportunidad para explotar el potencial de Marvel (si es que le queda algo después de los Avengers) pero tendrán que mejorar la escritura de sus películas para no cometer fallas como la que cometieron en Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, ¿ya la vieron?
