As we all know, HBO is a company well-known for producing many high-quality series all the time. I found it a bit surprising that I have never heard about this series before but well, I guess it is impossible to know every single TV show out there.
This series has the peculiarity of having episodes lasting around 30 minutes, which isn't normal for HBO shows but I am pretty sure there are other series from this company having short episodes as well. I think it is normal for comedies to have short episodes regardless of the company producing them.
After reading a little bit about the series it seemed like a fun show to watch and since 3 seasons were already available it was an easy decision to begin watching it.
The story is about this hitman, Barry, who seems to be bored with his life. Killing people isn't longer something exciting for him and he appears to be bored with how his life is going.
He kills people not because he enjoys it but only because the pay is good. He has become desensitized to it, and he is able to kill a person without blinking an eye. He is probably a psychopath but not a sadist.
Como todos sabemos, HBO es una empresa conocida por producir muchas series de alta calidad todo el tiempo. Me sorprendió un poco que nunca antes había oído hablar de esta serie, pero bueno, supongo que es imposible conocer todos los programas de televisión que existen.
Esta serie tiene la particularidad de tener episodios que duran alrededor de 30 minutos, lo cual no es normal en los programas de HBO, pero estoy bastante seguro de que hay otras series de esta compañía que también tienen episodios cortos. Creo que sí es normal que las comedias tengan episodios cortos independientemente de la compañía que las produzca.
Después de leer un poco sobre la serie, me pareció un programa divertido de ver y como ya había 3 temporadas disponibles, fue una decisión fácil comenzar a verla.
La historia trata sobre este asesino a sueldo, Barry, que parece estar aburrido de su vida. Matar gente ya no es algo emocionante para él y parece que todo le aburre.
Mata a la gente no porque le guste, sino solo porque la paga es buena. Se ha vuelto insensible a actos violentos y es capaz de matar a una persona sin pestañear. Probablemente sea un psicópata pero no un sádico.
He then follows her to a small theater and begins to observe all of the actors, actresses, and the director doing their job, and by just random luck, an actor asks him to help him practice some lines. He awkwardly participates in these activities and suddenly, the actress from before, the one he found yelling, invites him to hang out with some of her friends.
As all of this is going on, Barry appears to be a bit confused because he doesn't know anything about acting and he doesn't understand why these people at interesting in interacting with him. However, since this actress is a very attractive woman this might have convinced Barry to just go with the flow.
He became very excited listening to how all these people love acting and see it as their life purpose, and it was as if Barry was seeing the light for the first time. He starts to think acting might be his life purpose as well, why not right?
Without giving it too much thought, he decides he will be an actor during the day, and a hitman during the night if necessary. But as expected, eventually these 2 jobs or hobbies, I am not sure how to call them, begin to clash and he needs to figure out how to keep up with these obligations that are incompatible with each other for the most part.
He seems to be a super relaxed person for the type of job he is used to doing and also for the type of people he has to deal with thanks to this hitman job. This might be because he is pretty confident about his fighting and murdering skills, so messing with him isn't easy even by other tough guys. But his cold-blooded nature remains solid even when enduring violent situations where his life might be at risk.
Eventually, his acting activities and social circles begin to become more important than everything related to his hitman activities, and this sometimes causes funny situations but also some dysfunctionalities in his life. Criminal groups don't let people stop working for them just like that, and Barry will soon enough realize this for good.
Luego la sigue a un pequeño teatro y comienza a observar a todos los actores, actrices y al director haciendo su trabajo, y por casualidad, un actor le pide que lo ayude a practicar algunas líneas. Él participa torpemente en estas actividades y de repente, la actriz de antes, a la que encontró gritando, lo invita a pasar el rato con algunos de sus amigos.
Mientras todo esto sucede, Barry parece estar un poco confundido porque no sabe nada sobre actuación y no entiende por qué estas personas están interesadas en interactuar con él. Sin embargo, dado que esta actriz es una mujer muy atractiva, esto podría haber convencido a Barry de seguir la corriente.

Parece ser una persona súper relajada para el tipo de trabajo que está acostumbrado a hacer y también para el tipo de gente con la que tiene que tratar gracias a este trabajo de sicario. Esto podría deberse a que tiene bastante confianza en sus habilidades de lucha y asesinato, por lo que meterse con él no es fácil ni siquiera para otros tipos duros. Su naturaleza de sangre fría se mantiene sólida incluso cuando soporta situaciones violentas en las que su vida podría estar en peligro.
Eventualmente, sus actividades actorales y sus círculos sociales relacionados comienzan a ser más importantes que todo lo relacionado con sus actividades de asesino a sueldo, y esto a veces provoca situaciones graciosas pero también algunas disfuncionalidades en su vida. Seeing this guy attempting to seduce a woman will probably make most viewers laugh and this character seemed like the harder to portray properly in the entire show but Henry Winkler did an amazing acting job. He even became my favorite character of the entire season.
This might sound surprising but as the season advances, we realize Barry is actually a very educated and principled guy, he has his own moral basis when it comes to killing, he only likes to kill the "bad guys", and he finds it very hard to betray or cause harm to people he considers completely innocent. In fact, nothing causes much pain to him than affecting innocent people.
All he wants to do is to have a happy and normal life, where he doesn't have to hurt anyone, but ironically, he is very capable of hurting anyone that threatens that.
Final thoughts
Barry is an acceptable watch but it isn't a hilarious comedy. It provides some funny moments but nothing that will make the viewer laugh out loud with the exception of a couple of genius moments. However, since the plot is ingenious and it isn't normal to see a murderer suddenly having a change of career so peculiar, it is entertaining enough to recommend it.
The type of comedy it has can be considered dark comedy because it is usually related to violence and murders, but it doesn't have too much gore despite the fact all types of murders happen in the majority of the episodes.
The way this series approaches its comedic moments wasn't very common in my experience, so I don't really have another show I can compare it with. However, after watching 2 or 3 episodes you can confirm if you enjoy it or not because the tone of the series doesn't change, at least in season 1 which is the only one I have seen so far. But have in mind the best comedic moments happen in later episodes.

Incluso se convirtió en mi personaje favorito de toda la temporada.

Barry es un show aceptable, pero no es una comedia hilarante. Proporciona algunos momentos divertidos, pero nada que haga reír a carcajadas al espectador, con la excepción de un par de momentos geniales. Sin embargo, dado que la trama es ingeniosa y no es normal ver a un asesino de repente teniendo un cambio de carrera tan peculiar, es lo suficientemente entretenido como para recomendarlo.
El tipo de comedia que tiene se puede considerar comedia negra porque suele estar relacionada con la violencia y los asesinatos, pero no tiene demasiado gore a pesar de que en la mayoría de los episodios ocurren todo tipo de asesinatos.
La forma en que esta serie aborda sus momentos cómicos no fue muy común en mi experiencia, por lo que realmente no tengo otro programa con el que pueda compararlo. Sin embargo, después de ver 2 o 3 episodios puedes confirmar si te gustó o no porque el tono de la serie no cambia, al menos en la temporada 1 que es la única que he visto hasta ahora. Pero ten en cuenta que los mejores momentos cómicos suceden en episodios posteriores.
