In addition to being a comic book, The Sandman is also a series adapted for Netflix by its same creator. Today my impressions about this series which I spent more than a month watching.
Además de ser un comic, The Sandman es también una serie adaptada para Netflix por su mismo creador. Hoy mis impresiones acerca de esta serie la cual tardé más de un mes en terminarla.
At the end of December I started watching a series that would eventually take over a month to finish. Not because the series had any kind of problem or was boring, rather I wanted to drag it out to enjoy it a little longer, as it seemed quite entertaining and different from the other stuff I had been watching.
Then I found out that this series was actually based on the first two volumes of a 10-volume comic book series, distributed in 75 issues. These comics tell us the story of the gods or "The Eternals" a set of beings that were born before the gods that created humans. Fate, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair and Delirium, are born in that order and the title of this comic is The Sandman, considered by experts as one of the best things ever written by man.
However, Netflix based its series on Dream, Morpheus or Oniros. This time bringing in the comic creator Neil Gaiman himself, who is also known for making novels like Coraline (2002) which was adapted into an animated movie. Although the series had many comparisons to another Netflix hit Lucifer, this work is much more serious, which is congruent with the comic, which were quite novel when they were published.
This is because when we think of comics we usually associate it with superheroes, but The Sandman was different and was conceived in an orphic setting inspired by Anglo-Saxon paganism, but what is Netflix's The Sandman about?
A finales de diciembre comencé a ver una serie que, a la postre, tardaría más de un mes en terminar. No porque la serie tuviera algún tipo de problema o fuera aburrida, más bien quería alargarla para disfrutarla un poco más, ya que me parecía bastante entretenida y diferente al resto de cosas que había estado viendo.
Luego me enteré de que, en realidad, esta serie estaba basada en los dos primeros volúmenes de una serie de comics de 10 tomos, distribuidos en 75 ediciones. Estas historietas nos cuentan la historia de los dioses o “Los Eternos” un conjunto de seres que nacieron antes de los dioses que crearon los humanos. El Destino, Muerte, Sueño, Destrucción, Deseo, Desesperanza y Delirio, nacen en ese orden y el título de este comic es The Sandman, considerado por los expertos como una de las mejores cosas jamás escritas por el hombre.
Sin embargo, Netflix basó su serie en Sueño, Morfeo o Oniros. Esta vez trayendo al propio creador del comic Neil Gaiman, que también es conocido por hacer novelas como Coraline (2002) que fue adaptada en el cine en una película animada. Aunque la serie tuvo muchas comparaciones con otro éxito de Netflix: Lucifer, este trabajo es mucho más serio, lo que es cónsono con el comic, que fueron bastante novedosos cuando se publicaron.
Esto es porque cuando pensamos en comics generalmente lo asociamos con superhéroes, pero The Sandman era distinto y fue concebido en un ambiente orifico inspirado en el paganismo anglosajón, pero, ¿de qué trata The Sandman de Netflix?
Dream (Tom Sturridge) is the one who controls the dreams of everyone on Earth. His realm is dark and mysterious, many creatures make life in it; nightmares, underworld beings and his assistant Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong) helps him in the titanic task of keeping everything in order.
But, as Dream worries about maintaining the balance between the real world and the dream world, occult magician Roderick Burgess (Charles Dance) is visited by John Hathaway (Bill Paterson) who promises to capture the Angel of Death through a spell and thus force him to bring back his dead son.
Dream, who at the time was on Earth, chasing The Corinthian (Boyd Holbrook), a creation of his who is using nightmares to kill people, is caught by the wizard mistaking him for Death. Dream is now in captivity and 100 years pass in which the dream world is greatly damaged causing thousands of people to be trapped in their own dreams.
Finally, he manages to get free, but when he returns to his kingdom, it has changed irreparably, thus beginning a struggle to recover all the objects that were stolen, catch the Corinthian, restore the world of dreams and regain the balance between his kingdom and the world of humans. However, his enemies also include many of his relatives: the Eternals.
Sueño (Tom Sturridge) es quien controla los sueños de todos los habitantes de la Tierra. Su reino es oscuro y misterioso, muchas criaturas hacen vida en él; pesadillas, seres del inframundo y su ayudante Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong) le ayuda en la titánica tarea de mantener todo en orden.
Pero, mientras sueño se preocupa en mantener el equilibrio entre el mundo real y el mundo de la ensoñación, el mago ocultista Roderick Burgess (Charles Dance) recibe la visita de John Hathaway (Bill Paterson) quien le promete capturar al Ángel de la Muerte a través de un hechizo y así obligarle a traer de vuelta a su hijo muerto.
Sueño, quien en ese momento estaba en la Tierra, persiguiendo a El Corintio (Boyd Holbrook), una creación suya que está utilizando las pesadillas para matar a la gente, es atrapado por el mago confundiéndolo con Muerte. Sueño ahora está en cautividad y pasan 100 años en los cuales el mundo de la ensoñación se ve muy perjudicado haciendo que miles de personas queden atrapados en sus propios sueños.
Finalmente, logra salir en libertad, pero cuando vuelve a su reino, este ha cambiado irreparablemente, comenzando así una lucha por recuperar todos los objetos que le fueron robados, atrapar a al Corintio, restaurar el mundo de la ensoñación y recuperar el equilibrio entre su reino y el mundo de los humanos. Sin embargo, entre sus enemigos también se cuentan muchos de sus familiares: Los Eternos.
I found it difficult to summarize the plot without telling the whole story, but the truth is that it is much denser than we might think. Each chapter of The Sandman is different from the previous one, this is particularly good, as the series never gets boring. Many episodes are quite difficult to digest, especially with the coldness that Tom Sturridge imbued in his impersonation of Dream.
However, as the story unfolds we realize that Dream is actually much more empathetic than we think, especially to humanity. As he passes through reality, we see Dream giving eternal life to an earthly man in order to explore what it feels like to have a friend whom he summons every 100 years for a reunion. This story is seamlessly interspersed with hundreds of other stories happening at the same time.
As each era passes we are immersed in the social and scientific advances that humanity has experienced, I loved this distinction between eras. The history of humanity is told through the eyes of Dream, but all this happens while he struggles to regain control of his kingdom. A dreamy and very moving chapter was where Dream and Death meet again. Death is simply wise and takes us through a spiral of encounters with people soon to pass away. That complexity, but at the same time the naturalness of knowing that death is something natural, is simple, but beautiful.
Se me hizo difícil resumir el argumento sin contar la historia completa, pero la verdad es que es mucho más densa de lo que pudiéramos pensar. Cada capítulo de The Sandman es diferente al anterior, esto es particularmente bueno, ya que la serie nunca llega a aburrirte. Muchos episodios son bastante difíciles de digerir, sobre todo con la frialdad que Tom Sturridge le impregno a su personificación de Sueño.
Sin embargo, a medida que la historia se va desarrollando nos damos cuenta de que en realidad Sueño es mucho más empático de lo que pensamos, sobre todo con la humanidad. En su paso, por la realidad vemos a Sueño dándole la vida eterna a un hombre terrenal con la finalidad de explorar que se siente tener a un amigo al cual cita cada 100 años a una reunión. Esta historia se intercala a la perfección, con cientos de historias que ocurren al mismo tiempo.
Mientras cada época transcurre nos vamos sumergiendo en los avances sociales y científicos los cuales ha vivido la humanidad, esta distinción entre épocas me encantó. La historia de la humanidad se cuenta a través de los ojos de Sueño, pero todo esto ocurre mientras lucha por recuperar el control de su reino. Un capítulo soñado y muy emotivo fue en el que Sueño y muerte se reencuentran. La muerte es sencillamente sabia y nos lleva a través de una espiral de encuentros con personas prontas a fallecer. Esa complejidad, pero al mismo tiempo la naturalidad de saber que la muerte es algo natural, es sencillo, pero hermoso.
Lucifer portrayed as an androgynous character was also brilliant. And although it's not a normal series and sometimes we think that there is no continuity from one sequence to another, the points at which it connects serve to keep you glued to the screen. Mind you, I also have my reservations. For example, 100 years go by and two of the main characters are still alive, how do they manage it, that plot error is unforgivable, but it doesn't affect the development that much.
Many will not understand The Sandman, in fact, they say that it is in danger of being cancelled; its presentation, through a series of quite sophisticated anthologies, is atypical, but also interesting. I love that, that what we would perhaps think would be its weak points, are in fact what works best for this series, which I'm sure that if you pay attention to it, you'll enjoy it. 100% recommended.
Lucifer representado como un personaje andrógino, también fue algo brillante. Y aunque no es una serie normal y a veces pensamos que no existe la continuidad de una secuencia a otra, los puntos en los cuales conecta sirven para mantenerlos pegados en la pantalla. Eso sí, también tengo mis reservas. Por ejemplo, pasan 100 años y dos de los principales personajes están vivos, ¿cómo es que lo logran?, ese error argumental es imperdonable, pero no afecta tanto en el desarrollo.
Muchos no entenderán a The Sandman, de hecho, dicen por ahí que está en peligro de ser cancelada; su presentación, a través de una serie de antologías bastante sofisticadas, es atípica, pero también interesante. Eso me encanta, que lo que quizás pensaríamos serían sus puntos débiles, son de hecho lo que mejor le va a esta serie, que estoy seguro de que si le prestas atención, la vas a disfrutar. 100% recomendada.
