¿Alguna vez dejaremos de escuchar que el amor es ciego? No creo. Por la sencilla razón de que nuestras elecciones en ese tema están muy lejos de ser racionales. El impulso amoroso no surge como una meditada reflexión sobre conveniencias o inconveniencias, sino como un fogonazo que se expande desde lo más hondo de las entrañas.

El excelente cineasta francés Leos Carax, de quien recuerdo la extraña película Holy Motors, nos presenta en Annette (2021) un musical al estilo de las mejores óperas rocks; una obra tenebrosa que pasa revista a la dificultad de las relaciones y al riesgo que conlleva hacer la elección equivocada.

Henry McHenry (Adam Driver) es un famoso comediante que aparece en sus actos vestido con una bata con capucha al estilo de los boxeadores. Su espectáculo lo monta contando historias atrevidas sobre temas que a veces hieren al público. En uno de sus shows él mismo se pregunta ¿por qué se hizo comediante? Y entre las tantas respuestas que da dice que lo hizo “para transmitir con una sonrisa esos sentimientos tan profundos de humillación y odio que todos sentimos”, y agrega más: “para desarmar a la gente, hacerlos reír, y poder decir la verdad sin que lo maten…” Henry usa la comedia para hablar de los sentimientos que lo atormentan.

También cuenta Henry que se ha enamorado de Ann (Marion Cotillard) una excelente soprano que es la Reina de la Ópera. A diferencia de Henry que es un tipo oscuro, Ann es toda luz, uno de esos seres que despiertan el amor de todos.

Deciden casarse y al principio todo marcha sobre ruedas, pero las cosas empiezan a complicarse cuando nace Annette, una niña que no es humana sino una muñeca de madera, articulada como una marioneta.

Henry cada vez se siente más inferior que Ann, se siente acomplejado, cansado, y decide poner fin a sus días como comediante. En sus primeras presentaciones en las Vegas hace una serie de shows en los que se encarga de molestar al auditorio. Como excelente comediante que es sabe cuáles teclas tocar para que el público lo ame o lo odie. Al final todos terminan odiándolo.

El camino hacia el abismo de su esposo no deja indiferente a Ann, comienza a sospechar que en el fondo de Henry hay algo malo, perturbador, dañino, pero Henry es un padre dedicado y amoroso con la pequeña Annette.

En un intento por rescatar la relación deciden hacer los tres un largo viaje en el yate de la familia. Allí Henry pierde el control, se emborracha, y en medio de una fuerte tormenta hace que Ann pierda el equilibrio, cayendo al mar y muriendo ahogada.

A partir de ese momento se van a desencadenar una serie de extraños acontecimientos que van a comprometer el futuro de Henry, Annette y de las personas cercanas a su entorno…

El musical es un género versátil, da para todo desde la comedia hasta el drama. En esta oportunidad la historia presentada en Annette es de un profundo contenido dramático.

Mientras veía la película recordé la célebre Tommy (1975), una de las primeras óperas rock que se hicieron. En Tommy al igual que en Annette los niños sufren las consecuencias de las decisiones tomadas por los adultos.

El director Carax no deja fácil la respuesta a quien pregunte ¿de qué trata la película? Porque son muchos los temas que se entremezclan en esta original cinta.

Uno pudiera ser el de lo extraño que son las decisiones amorosas y las decisiones en general. Hasta para el mismo Henry representa un enigma saber qué pudo ver Ann en él, porque ambos tienen personalidades completamente diferentes. El caso es que Ann, una triunfadora que se ha levantado desde abajo gracias al bello don de su voz, decide enamorarse de un sujeto extremadamente perturbado y que no hizo nada por disimular su temperamento conflictivo. En la película no vi nada que pudiera explicar esto, sencillamente ocurrió para desgracia de Ann. Seguramente que muchos espectadores se sentirán identificados en ese drama, el de haber hecho una mala elección.

Otro asunto que está muy bien desarrollado es esa rara empatía que se establece entre el artista y el público. Henry es un gran artista, sin duda, tiene una gran habilidad para captar la atención de un público que quizá al escuchar el ácido material de sus shows se les revelan partes de sus zonas más oscuras.

Henry desarrolla su espectáculo con temas escabrosos, se burla del público, lo ofende y logra que aquello llegue al otro como algo lo suficientemente gracioso como para hacer reír. Nunca recurre al chiste sencillo o ramplón, su trabajo es de altura y quizá su público asiste con entusiasmo para hacer un poco de catarsis, para exorcizar sus demonios ocultos.

Otro tema que llamó mi atención es lo potente que puede ser el sentimiento de venganza. Es tan fuerte que se antepone al bienestar de los hijos. Ann no tiene problemas en usar a Annette para concretar sus planes de venganza. Algo que vemos a cada rato en el mundo real, cualquier revisión somera a las informaciones de prensa o a las conversaciones de los vecinos es suficiente para constatar eso.

A momentos me pareció excesivo el tiempo de la cinta, las dos horas veinte minutos que dura se me hicieron un poco largas, puede ser que sea un problema mío, quizá para alguno de ustedes les parezca que todo encaja bien durante ese largo tiempo. Si alguno la ha visto me gustaría conocer su opinión.

La película tiene una excelente realización visual, el director de fotografía hace un gran trabajo para crear esas atmósferas oscuras que refuerzan la tensión en la trama, hay pasajes hechos con bellas imágenes oníricas, creadas con fundidos y dobles exposiciones. Los arreglos musicales son de primera, los coros, los arreglos orquestales y sobre todo la exquisita voz de Ann es un deleite para los oídos. De igual modo en la parte musical es de destacar la bella voz de la pequeña Annette. Como no sabe hablar solo se dedica a entonar bellas melodías que encantan a los oyentes, las tonalidades de la niña son sencillamente sublimes.

El grueso de la actuación recae en la soberbia interpretación del joven Adam Driver, quien también canta. Su interpretación de hombre perturbado se queda pegada en la mente del espectador. Su papel es muy difícil porque está compuesto de largos monólogos, pero el actor se luce allí, pasando fácilmente de la risa a la ira, de la alegría a la desdicha. Su actuación es impecable.

Ann también lo hace muy bien pero el guión está hecho para favorecer el desarrollo del personaje de Henry.

Vi en Annette una historia bastante original, con un guión de un gran lirismo, no hay desperdicio en ninguna de sus líneas. Es una obra que fácilmente se puede ver más de una vez. En la actualidad la pueden conseguir en streaming.

Will we ever stop hearing that love is blind? I don't think so. For the simple reason that our choices in this matter are far from rational. The impulse to love does not arise as a meditated reflection on convenience or inconvenience, but as a flash that expands from the depths of the entrails.

The excellent French filmmaker Leos Carax, whose strange film Holy Motors I remember, presents us with Annette (2021), a musical in the style of the best rock operas; a tenebrous work that reviews the difficulty of relationships and the risk involved in making the wrong choice.

Henry McHenry (Adam Driver) is a famous comedian who appears in his acts dressed in a boxer-style hooded robe. He puts on his show by telling risqué stories about topics that sometimes hurt the audience. In one of his shows he asks himself why he became a comedian? And among the many answers he gives he says he did it "to convey with a smile those deep feelings of humiliation and hatred we all feel", and adds more: "to disarm people, make them laugh, and to be able to tell the truth without getting killed..." Henry uses comedy to talk about the feelings that torment him.

Henry also tells of falling in love with Ann (Marion Cotillard) an excellent soprano who is the Queen of the Opera. Unlike Henry who is a dark guy, Ann is all light, one of those beings that awaken the love of all.

They decide to get married and at first everything goes smoothly, but things start to get complicated when Annette is born, a girl who is not human but a wooden doll, articulated like a puppet.

Henry feels more and more inferior than Anna, he feels self-conscious, tired, and decides to end his days as a comedian. In his first shows in Las Vegas he does a series of shows in which he takes it upon himself to annoy the audience. As an excellent comedian he knows which keys to play to make the audience love him or hate him. In the end they all end up hating him.

The road to the abyss of her husband does not leave Anna indifferent, she begins to suspect that deep inside Henry there is something bad, disturbing, harmful, but Henry is a dedicated and loving father to little Annette.

In an attempt to rescue the relationship, the three of them decide to take a long trip on the family yacht. There Henry loses control, gets drunk, and in the middle of a strong storm causes Anna to lose her balance, falling into the sea and drowning.

From that moment on, a series of strange events are unleashed that will jeopardize the future of Henry, Annette and the people close to them...

The musical is a versatile genre, it can do everything from comedy to drama. This time the story presented in Annette is of a deep dramatic content.

While watching the film I was reminded of the famous Tommy (1975), one of the first rock operas ever made. In Tommy, as in Annette, children suffer the consequences of decisions made by adults.

Director Carax does not leave an easy answer to anyone who asks what is the film about? Because there are many themes that intermingle in this original film.

One could be the strangeness of love decisions and decisions in general. Even for Henry himself it is an enigma to know what Anna could see in him, because both have completely different personalities. The fact is that Anna, an achiever who has risen from the bottom thanks to the beautiful gift of her voice, decides to fall in love with an extremely disturbed guy who did nothing to disguise his conflictive temperament. I saw nothing in the film that could explain this, it simply happened to Anna's misfortune. Surely many viewers will identify with this drama, that of having made a bad choice.

Another issue that is very well developed is that rare empathy that is established between the artist and the audience. Henry is a great performer, no doubt, he has a great ability to capture the attention of an audience that perhaps listening to the acidic material in his shows reveals parts of their darker areas.

Henry develops his show with lurid themes, mocks the audience, offends them and manages to make it come across as funny enough to make them laugh. He never resorts to simple or crude jokes, his work is of the highest level and perhaps his audience attends with enthusiasm to do a little catharsis, to exorcise their hidden demons.

Another theme that caught my attention is how powerful the feeling of revenge can be. It is so strong that it takes precedence over the welfare of the children. Anna has no problem using Annette to concretize her plans for revenge. Something we see all the time in the real world, any cursory review of the press reports or the conversations of the neighbors is enough to confirm this.

At times I found the length of the film to be excessive, the two hours and twenty minutes that it lasts felt a little long, maybe it's a problem of mine, maybe for some of you it seems that everything fits well during that long time. If any of you have seen it, I would like to know your opinion.

The film has an excellent visual realization, the director of photography does a great job to create those dark atmospheres that reinforce the tension in the plot, there are passages made with beautiful dreamlike images, created with fades and double exposures. The musical arrangements are first class, the choirs, the orchestral arrangements and above all Anna's exquisite voice is a delight for the ears. Likewise in the musical part is to highlight the beautiful voice of little Annette. As she does not know how to speak, she just sings beautiful melodies that enchant the listeners, the girl's tonalities are simply sublime.

The bulk of the acting falls on the superb performance of young Adam Driver, who also sings. His interpretation of a disturbed man sticks in the viewer's mind. His role is very difficult because it is composed of long monologues, but the actor shines there, moving easily from laughter to anger, from joy to unhappiness. His performance is impeccable.

Anna also does very well but the script is made to favor the development of Henry's character.

I saw in Annette a quite original story, with a script of a great lyricism, there is no waste in any of its lines. It is a play that you can easily watch more than once. You can currently get it on streaming.
