Continuing with last year's good films, today my recommendation is a Spanish production that is a favorite for the Spanish Goya awards. It has 20 nominations, including the main categories and it deserves them all. If it were my decision, I would give it the award for best film. Although it has other strong competitors, such as Madres Paralelas, by the always favorite Almodovar, but so far it has become the Spanish film with the most nominations for these awards in its history.
Siguiendo con las buenas películas del año pasado, hoy mi recomendación es una producción española que es favorita para los premios Goya españoles. Tiene 20 nominaciones, incluyendo las categorías principales y se las merece todas. Si fuera mi decisión, le daría el premio a la mejor película. Fernando León de Aranoa es un cineasta que no tiene una filmografía muy extensa, pero desde que recibió el Goya como mejor director novel por la película Familia, siempre ha sido un director a tener en cuenta por sus excelentes propuestas. El reconocimiento definitivo llegó con su segunda película: Barrio, recibiendo el premio Goya al mejor director y al mejor guión.
Estas películas las vi mucho después de su estreno, en formato de vídeo, porque la primera película que vi del cineasta fue Los Lunes al Sol, en 2002, que además estaba protagonizada por el magnífico actor Javier Bardem, con el que trabajaría años después en otros proyectos, como la película Loving Pablo, donde Bardem interpretaba a Pablo Escobar. Esa fue, quizás, la película que menos me gustó del cineasta.
Todas las demás películas del director me han encantado, incluso aquella en la que contaba con un reparto internacional: Tim Robbbins, Benicio del Toro, Olga Kurylenko, entre otros, me pareció muy divertida, la película se llamaba Un día perfecto y recibió el Goya al mejor guion adaptado por ese trabajo. Ahora, el cineasta vuelve con la excelente película El Buen Patrón, que parece la favorita para arrasar en los premios Goya. Para mí no hay discusión, quiero que gane todos los premios posibles, porque he disfrutado mucho con la película.
Es una película muy española, con un humor muy español, pero el cine es un lenguaje universal y estoy seguro de que no importa en qué parte del mundo se proyecte, se podrá disfrutar de esta fantástica comedia con toques dramáticos, en la que muchos podrán sentirse identificados. Una sátira protagonizada por un magnífico Bardem, demostrando por qué es uno de los mejores actores de su país.
What is the plot of El Buen Patrón?
The company Basculas Blanco is going to be visited by the regional government commission to be evaluated and win the award as one of the best companies in the province. It is a company whose owner, Julio Blanco, inherited from his family and is very proud of it. That week, in which they expect the visit of the commission, will be hell for Julio. A series of problems will accumulate and every day things will get more complicated. A fired employee will start a protest, his most trusted employee will hinder the company's operations, a new marketing intern will be his new love interest, and production will suffer serious setbacks. The respectful Julio Blanco, who boasts that everyone in the company is his family, is in reality a selfish being who thinks only of his own benefit, wants to win that prize and is willing to do anything to get it. In reality, he is a rogue, cunning and uses his power to always come out on top, even though the world thinks he is a good boss. How will they face the complicated problems during that week? Will he get the coveted prize? Is Julio Blanco really a good boss?.

La empresa Basculas Blanco va a recibir la visita de la comisión del gobierno regional para ser evaluada y ganar el premio como una de las mejores empresas de la provincia. Es una empresa cuyo propietario, Julio Blanco, heredó de su familia y está muy orgulloso de ella. Esa semana, en la que esperan la visita de la comisión, será un infierno para Julio. Se acumularán una serie de problemas y cada día las cosas se complicarán más. Un empleado despedido iniciará una protesta, su empleado de mayor confianza obstaculizará el funcionamiento de la empresa, una nueva becaria de marketing será su nuevo objetivo amoroso y la producción sufrirá graves inconvenientes. El respetuoso Julio Blanco, que presume de que todos en la empresa son su familia, es en realidad un ser egoísta que sólo piensa en su propio beneficio, quiere ganar ese premio y está dispuesto a hacer cualquier cosa para conseguirlo. Are the bosses really good? Do you work in a company? How is your relationship with your boss? Do you believe all the lies that he/she tells you that he/she cares about you? I can't lump all bosses together, because there may be some employers who do care about their employees. Perhaps in small companies, with few employees, there may be some degree of connection between the boss and the employee.
But in most cases, employees in a large company will never be happy with the boss. They will always talk amongst themselves, complaining about pay, about vacation, about overtime, about a host of problems that they will see from their point of view as employees. Because there is also the other side of the coin, the problems and decisions that the boss has to make for the benefit of his company.
We must be honest with ourselves. Bosses only care about the benefit of their company. All those nice words that are said in meetings with employees, at parties, at awards ceremonies, are pure lies! They are shows full of falsehood and hypocrisy. People know it and assume their role within this microcosm.
The employees know that their boss lies to them and the boss knows that his employees know that he lies to them. All those smiles in front of the boss are faked. Laughing at the boss's jokes is fake. Society is like that, we are aware that we lie to each other in the employer-employee relationship.
It reminds me of my time as an employee, where in the company where I worked, there were changes of bosses, and a group of employees who were the gossips and who always sought to win the sympathy of each boss, began their work of laughing at all the jokes, sucking socks hahahaha everything in order to be the favorite of the boss and maintain their work status, although perhaps inside they felt repulsion and hatred for the boss. This is how the world works and we cannot change it.

¿Los jefes son realmente buenos? ¿Trabajas en una empresa? ¿Cómo es tu relación con tu jefe? ¿Te crees todas las mentiras que te dice que se preocupa por ti? No puedo meter a todos los jefes en el mismo saco, porque puede haber algunos empresarios si se preocupen por sus empleados. Tal vez en las empresas pequeñas, con pocos empleados, pueda haber algún grado de conexión entre el jefe y el empleado.
Pero en la mayoría de los casos, los empleados de una gran empresa nunca estarán contentos con el jefe. Siempre hablarán entre ellos, quejándose de la paga, de las vacaciones, de las horas extras, de un sinfín de problemas que verán desde su punto de vista como empleados. Porque también está la otra cara de la moneda, los problemas y las decisiones que tiene que tomar el jefe en beneficio de su empresa.
Debemos ser sinceros con nosotros mismos. A los jefes sólo les importa el beneficio de su empresa. Todas esas palabras bonitas que se dicen en las reuniones con los empleados, en las fiestas, en las entregas de premios, ¡son pura mentira! Son espectáculos llenos de falsedad e hipocresía. La gente lo sabe y asume su papel dentro de este microcosmos.
Los empleados saben que su jefe les miente y el jefe sabe que sus empleados saben que les miente. Todas esas sonrisas ante el jefe son fingidas. Reírse de los chistes del jefe es falso. La sociedad es así, somos conscientes de que nos mentimos unos a otros en la relación empleador-empleado.
Me recuerda a mi época de empleado, donde en la empresa donde trabajaba, había cambios de jefes, y un grupo de empleados que eran los chismosos y que siempre buscaban ganarse la simpatía de cada jefe, comenzaban su labor de reírse de todos los chistes, chupar calcetines jajajaja todo con tal de ser el favorito del jefe y mantener su estatus laboral, aunque tal vez por dentro sintieran repulsión y odio por el jefe. El mundo funciona así y no podemos cambiarlo.
Julio Blanco
Julio Banco is a scoundrel, a scoundrel, a liar. But the merit is the excellent construction of the character and the script that supports him. A script in which nothing is missing or missing. Each piece is in its place and as Julio Blanco himself says in the phrase that is at the beginning of the post: sometimes you have to trick the scales so that the measure is accurate. He was one of the Golden Globe nominees for playing Desi Arnaz in the film Siendo los Ricardos, but honestly, this actor deserves to be recognized for the character of Julio Blanco, because he is immense. He has built a character rich in nuances, every gesture, behavior, look is totally planned and so natural, that impresses. We stop seeing the actor to observe the character. He is nominated for the Goya awards and I hope he wins. His character is already part of the history of Spanish cinema.
One week
This is the time in which the whole story takes place. But it is a week that no businessman would wish to have. The whole universe is lined up to make Julio Blanco's life a complete disaster, precisely when he is waiting for the surprise visit of the regional commission in charge of evaluating the companies and determining which one will win the coveted prize.
On the one hand, the dismissal of an accountant who, full of rage, settles at the door of the company to protest. That simple fact triggers a chain reaction whose outcome will be fatal. On the other hand, the marital problems of the most trusted employee, who are also childhood friends, will further complicate the whole operation of the company. Putting our protagonist in a complex situation that must be solved at all costs.
To all this, we must add the favors asked by his employees, which will be of great importance to close the circle of the story, because yes, the scoundrel Julio helps his employees when they need a favor, but being indebted to him, can lead to great tragedies.
Julio Blanco
Julio Banco es un sinvergüenza, un canalla, un mentiroso. Luego de ver una de las secuencias iniciales en la que está dando un discurso a los empleado, ha sido como ver a varios de los jefes que tuve en el pasado. Una sarta de frases comunes, bien estudiadas para manipular a la gente, para hacerles creer que todos son como hijos para él. Al estilo de las peroratas de los políticos, que dicen que hacen todo por nuestro bienestar, para protegernos, porque somos una familia. jajajaja.
Hay miles de Julio Blanco en todo el mundo, no sólo en España. Aunque la película es muy española en su humor, podemos reconocer fácilmente este tipo de personajes en el resto del mundo, en todos los países. El público objetivo de la película será el español, pero su mensaje es universal, por eso las buenas críticas en los festivales donde se ha proyectado.
Amarás y odiarás al personaje. Es un canalla y al mismo tiempo te fascinará. Es difícil explicar cómo estos seres sin escrúpulos pueden generar simpatía en nosotros los espectadores. Pero el mérito es la excelente construcción del personaje y el guion que lo sustenta. Un guión en el que no falta ni sobra nada. Cada pieza está en su sitio y como dice el propio Julio Blanco en la frase que está al principio del post: a veces hay que trucar la balanza para que la medida sea exacta. Esa frase resume toda la esencia de la película, porque es engañando a la balanza que personas como Julio sobreviven y salen victoriosos en la sociedad.
Inmenso Bardem
Esa simpatía y odio hacia Julio Blanco es posible gracias a la mutación realizada por el actor Javier Bardem. Fue uno de los nominados a los Globos de Oro por interpretar a Desi Arnaz en la película Siendo los Ricardos, pero sinceramente, este actor merece ser reconocido por el personaje de Julio Blanco, porque está inmenso. Ha construido un personaje rico en matices, cada gesto, comportamiento, mirada está totalmente planificada y es tan natural, que impresiona. Dejamos de ver al actor para observar al personaje. Está nominado a los premios Goya y espero que gane. Su personaje ya forma parte de la historia del cine español.
Una semana
Es el tiempo en el que transcurre toda la historia. Pero es una semana que ningún empresario desearía tener. Todo el universo se alinea para que la vida de Julio Blanco sea un completo desastre, precisamente cuando espera la visita sorpresa de la comisión regional encargada de evaluar las empresas y determinar cuál se lleva el ansiado premio.
Por un lado, el despido de un contable que, lleno de rabia, se instala en la puerta de la empresa para protestar. Ese simple hecho desencadena una reacción en cadena cuyo desenlace será fatal. Por otro lado, los problemas matrimoniales del empleado de mayor confianza, que además son amigos de la infancia, complicarán aún más todo el funcionamiento de la empresa. Poniendo a nuestro protagonista en una situación compleja que deberá resolver a toda costa.
A todo esto, hay que añadir los favores que le piden sus empleados, que serán de gran importancia para cerrar el círculo de la historia, porque sí, el canalla de Julio ayuda a sus empleados cuando necesitan un favor, pero estar en deuda con él, puede llevar a grandes tragedias.
Power
Powerful men are attractive, no matter if they are ugly or old, being the boss puts them in a privileged position. Even unbelievable things, like a very young woman can fall in love with an old man like Julio Blanco. There are those who use that power to abuse, take advantage of their position and appear to be an exemplary model in the eyes of the world. A lot of reality in what we see in this film dosed with a lot of humor.
The humor
I enjoyed and laughed a lot with the movie and I hope that those who accept my recommendation will also enjoy its humor. The director and the actor were in an interview with Buenafuente in Leit Motiv, I saw it and precisely the filmmaker defined it as a comedy with dramatic touches. I agree with that statement, that's why the success of the film, because they know how to handle all that black humor that I like so much, within situations that are dramatic, even some are tragic, but at no time does it lose that humor that makes us laugh at our reality.
Cast
Javier Bardem's masterful performance is accompanied by other excellent actors of Spanish cinema. All of them are in tune with their characters, after a process of weeks of rehearsals.
Goya Award winner Manolo Solo plays Milleires, Julio's friend and trusted employee. A man who loves his wife but is going through a crisis with her, which will cause him to make serious mistakes in the company. Another multifaceted actor who stands out in any of his works.
Óscar de la Fuente plays José, the troublemaker who will complicate everything for Julio. The man who will assume the protest as a way to say enough to the abuse of power.
Almudena Amor plays Liliana, a young woman who is an intern in the marketing department of the company and immediately Julio Blanco is fascinated by her, he sees her as one more trophy for his list of conquests, but then he gets a big surprise.

Los hombres poderosos son atractivos, no importa si son feos o viejos, ser el jefe los pone en una posición privilegiada. Incluso cosas increíbles, como que una mujer muy joven pueda enamorarse de un viejo como Julio Blanco. Hay quienes utilizan ese poder para abusar, aprovecharse de su posición y aparentar ser un modelo ejemplar a los ojos del mundo. Mucha realidad en lo que vemos en esta película dosificada con mucho humor.
El humor
Disfruté y me reí mucho con la película y espero que los que acepten mi recomendación también disfruten de su humor. El director y el actor estuvieron en una entrevista con Buenafuente en Leit Motiv, la vi y precisamente el cineasta la definió como una comedia con toques dramáticos. Estoy de acuerdo con esa afirmación, por eso el éxito de la película, porque saben manejar todo ese humor negro que tanto me gusta, dentro de situaciones que son dramáticas, incluso algunas son trágicas, pero en ningún momento se pierde ese humor que nos hace reír de nuestra realidad.
Reparto
La magistral interpretación de Javier Bardem está acompañada por otros excelentes actores del cine español. Todos ellos están en sintonía con sus personajes, tras un proceso de semanas de ensayos.
El ganador del Premio Goya, Manolo Solo, interpreta a Milleires, amigo y empleado de confianza de Julio. Un hombre que ama a su mujer pero que atraviesa una crisis con ella, lo que le hará cometer graves errores en la empresa. Otro actor polifacético que destaca en cualquiera de sus trabajos.
Óscar de la Fuente interpreta a José, el alborotador que le complicará todo a Julio. El hombre que asumirá la protesta como una forma de decir basta al abuso de poder.
Almudena Amor interpreta a Liliana, una joven que es becaria en el departamento de marketing de la empresa y de inmediato Julio Blanco queda fascinado por ella, la ve como un trofeo más para su lista de conquistas, pero luego se lleva una gran sorpresa.

The Good Patron is a fabulous movie. I promise you will have a lot of fun. I'm sure you've met people like the main character in this story. Or even, you may feel identified with the character, because you may be the owner of a small or big company and for sure you tell your employees that they are the most important thing for you, that they are a great family and that you are a good boss.
