Have you ever wondered what it’s like being a webtoon artist?
These days, webtoon is very popular to the point that many K-movies and dramas are based on webtoon stories. Have you ever been curious about the artists' life and how they work in the industry?
Today Webtoon is an on-going Korean drama that tries to portray the industry of webtoon. In this drama starring Kim Se Jong and Choi Daniel, we will be taken into the struggle of being webtoon artists and being a worker in the webtoon platform. I watch this K-drama on VIU premium membership and it’s also one of the recent and on-going K-dramas marked as VIU original. But if you have a Korean network channel, it is available on SBS every Friday & Saturday.
Kim se jong in this K-drama plays as someone who is positive and always tries to uplift her co-workers. I find her positivity to be refreshing as I often like to watch series with more bleak characters and serious tone. I hope this K-drama did not end up disappointing because there are a few k-dramas that started good but ended on a terrible note.
Unlike many K-dramas that focus on a single character, there are a few characters in this k-drama with their own struggles. So, in each episode thus far, we are presented with different problems that artists faced with their own creation or even themselves. The PD(people from the webtoon platform) acts like an assistant who tries to help them overcome their struggles. Essentially, they work as a team instead of what we might think that artists on big platforms work alone.
This K-drama is also a bit less serious than what I normally watch. During the episodes there are a few illustrations here and there that try to mimic the layout of a webtoon. If you remember a k-drama called “W” it has similar cinematography but in lighter tone and colors as Today’s webtoon is more in cheerful and positive notes than “W” which was essentially a thriller. I also like how the ambience changes throughout the episodes when different genres of webtoon are presented. When it comes to thriller webtoon artists, the ambience was a bit broody unlike the scene when the cheerful romance webtoon artist appears.
At the moment, there are only 4 episodes released. Thus far, the narrative is compelling enough. The viewer is presented with the story through a point of view from someone who isn't in the field and was once a consumer. Kim se jong plays as a former national judo artist who struggles to find a job despite her achievements. She likes to read webtoon and mentioned how it helped her during her training days. Although at first failing in her interview because she seemed clueless about technology, she later received attention from the chief webtoon department’s Jang Man-Cheol, played by Park ho San . She eventually was hired for a year in the department as a PD (producer). Her main job is to assist webtoon artists in order to meet deadlines and also assisting them with the editing. She made a few mistakes here and there but persisted with her contagious positivity. Will she end up being a permanent worker? Will the conflict inside the webtoon department be resolved?
I can’t wait for more episodes to be released and it’s also quite an uplifting K-drama after a series of serious K-dramas such as Eve and Why Her. I hope it can be better than a miracle and also jinxed at first sight.
