Much of hacking is done through social engineering and it is no different with the hack through voice phishing. The scammer first gathers the data, makes a convincing script based on people's desperation & fears, then pretends to be a person in charge or of importance, and calls the people. If you haven't realised the importance of your personal information, On The Line or Voice is a wake up call movie.

On the Line
A list of damages shown during the movie about the impact from the voice phishing hack that up until 2020 it got to $700M
A former policeman Seo-Joon (Byun Yo-Han) is now working at a construction site. Apparently his construction site was a target for the voice phishing operation .
His wife got a call that seo-joon was involved in the accident at the construction site and was about to be taken to court for manslaughter. The scammer urges the wife to submit the money in order to stall the police. Only 10 minutes after the wife transferred the money she realised that she was scammed.
The wife ran to the bank and there was nothing the bank could do. She also reported it to the police that she lost $700.000 and the police only said, " whoa, that much of money in just a phone call". On the way back home, the wife got into an accident while receiving a phone call from the scammer who mocked her and said, " if your life is only worth $70.000 you better die". Shortly after, his boss also died of suicide because he was the main reason why the scammer got the construction worker personal information.
Seo-jon decided to take the matter in his own hand. He got to the point where he found out that Korea was not the main operation. The operation is based in China with dozens of people working behind the line in a dark warehouse. There was nothing sophisticated programming going on. It was only a list of scripts with an acting that sounds convincing enough to con people. Will he succeed in infiltrating the operation and uncover the crime?
Like many of my reviews, I prefer to focus on the storyline and the issue that they are trying to raise. In this case, this movie straightforwardly uncovered the operation behind a voice phishing which happens until today. just when you thought that you might never get scammed or at least getting an attempt, you never know. It does not matter how smart you are but when those people touch your vulnerabilities through you or others, it's over.
It can be argued that this movie provides a criticism towards the law enforcement in their slow approach to respond to these scams. In one conversation, the police said to the former policeman that everyday people are getting scammed and they are working on fixing that. Later in the film, the police only told people to never accept the call that asks for money but again, that didn't stop people getting scammed nor scamming either.
In terms of film-making, throughout this movie, you will also see a lot of oversaturated yellow which made sense if we attach the explanation by Elizabeth Sherman,
Oversaturated yellow tones are supposed to depict warm, tropical, dry climates. But it makes the landscape in question look jaundiced and unhealthy, adding an almost dirty or grimy sheen to the scene. Why You See Yellow Tint Movie
Although it was meant specifically for American movies, this Korean movie is similar. There is also a contrast colour when depicting Korea which was in a brighter tone than the Chinese one that uses yellow tinted tone. The scammers are ruthless and all they ever think about is “money, money & money”. This movie is not only a wake-up call but also a reminder that we always have to be vigilant.
Surprisingly, while I was going to make a coffee and finishing this review, I heard a neighbour got scammed just 20 minutes before finishing this. Indonesians often refer to this scam as “gendam” or through a hypnosis but actually it has been debunked that often the victim falls into these scams because they fall into fake promises that the scammers offer. As I wanted to hear more, I sat next to my grandmother who also told me that she once experienced the same thing. There was a woman who pretended to buy stuff, and handed my grandmother the money, but after my grandmother took out the change, the woman suddenly said she didn’t want to buy the stuff. The woman snatched the money along with change, then ran away. All these could easily happen when we are not focused, alert and attentive. It is also the same with hive. Never fall into any fake promises that you get an airdrop or free hive through shady links.
