Although I am not a person who usually watches documentaries, there are a couple of exceptions that have gained my attention (And subsequently my heart) over the years. It is a very particular format that borrows elements from traditional cinema and adapts them to a much cruder plane, representing real events, a particular phenomenon... or the life of a person.
It's obvious, I know, but I feel the need to mention it considering that one of the greatest triumphs of "Roadrunner - A film about Anthony Bourdain" is the precious use of these tools that we associate with traditional cinema (Being more specific, the story telling focused), to immerse us in an unknown side of the life of a brilliant man, celebrating his virtues without needing to ignore the demons from which he could never escape.
As someone who has always admired the work of Anthony Bourdain (A renowned chef who rose to fame with the book "Kitchen Confidential" which at the same time allowed him to build a career on television, traveling the world and promoting the food of exotic places), it is difficult not to feel a lump in the throat when faced with such a crude representation of him as Roadrunner, a documentary that apart from reviewing his brilliant career until the painful day of his suicide, also seeks to make us connect with his mental state in various moments of his career, relying extensively on never-before-seen footage, as well as a couple of very intimate interviews with his family and friends.
Contrary to what many of us might expect from this film, Roadrunner is not a moralistic and optimistic adventure that sweeps the dark moments of Bourdain's life under the table, but rather embraces them as part of what made him so human and charismatic. first of all.
I know that for many it is strange to see such a depressing representation of a man who gave so much joy and warmth to the world, however, it is quite evident that the tense coexistence of both extremes of his personality were what ended up elevating him as a genius.
As someone who has always been obsessed with "creating things", it is very easy for me to gravitate towards the vulnerability that the Morgan Neville documentary represents, which, in the midst of chaos, is extremely inspirational.

Aunque no soy una persona que suela ver documentales, existen un par de excepciones que se han ganado mi atención (Y posteriormente mi corazón) a lo largo de los años. Es un formato muy particular que toma prestados elementos del cine tradicional y los adapta a un plano mucho más crudo, representando eventos reales, un fenómeno en particular... o la vida de una persona.
Es obvio, lo sé, pero siento la necesidad de mencionarlo considerando que uno de los mayores triunfos de "Roadrunner - A film about Anthony Bourdain" es precisamente el uso de estas herramientas que asociamos con el cine tradicional (Siendo más específico, el story telling enfocado), para sumergirnos a un lado desconocido de la vida de un hombre brillante, celebrando sus virtudes sin necesidad de ignorar los demonios de los que nunca pudo huir.
Cómo alguien que siempre ha admirado el trabajo de Anthony Bourdain (Un reconocido chef que saltó a la fama con el libro "Kitchen Confidential" que a la vez le permitió construir una carrera en la televisión viajando por el mundo y dando a conocer la comida de sitios exóticos), es difícil no sentir un nudo en la garganta ante una representación tan cruda del mismo como Roadrunner, un documental que aparte de repasar su brillante carrera hasta el doloroso día de su suicidio, también busca hacernos conectar con su estado mental en diversos momentos de su carrera, apoyándose ampliamente en footage nunca antes visto, así como un par de entrevistas muy íntimas con su familia y amigos.
Contrario a lo que muchos podríamos esperar de este filme, Roadrunner no es una aventura moralista y optimista que barre por debajo de la mesa los momentos oscuros de la vida de Bourdain, sino que los abraza como parte de aquello que lo hizo tan humano y carismático en primer lugar.
Sé que para muchos es extraño ver una representación tan deprimente de un hombre que le dió tanta alegría y calidez al mundo, no obstante, es bastante evidente la tensa coexistencia de ambos extremos de su personalidad fueron los que terminaron elevándolo como genio.
Cómo alguien que desde siempre ha estado obsesionado con "crear cosas", se me hace muy fácil gravitar hacia la vulnerabilidad que el documental Morgan Neville representa, que, en medio del caos resulta extremadamente inspiracional.
